You can't solely be thinking it's cyclists that need increased accountability as that would appear biased. Your comment about red light jumpers does not relate to what we see in the video. The cyclist stopping, looking and going across slowly with the green man. It is of course worth noting the 3yr Paris trial that concluded that allowing cyclists to pass through some red lights led to a reduction in the number of collisions. This proves that red light running is not inherently risky, but it is of course illegal. I look forward to the laws being reviewed. None of this is to excuse reckless red light running of course.
They should have their licence taken away from them.....Oh wait, what licence..... But seriously if they do have a driving licence it should be endorsed and pay a fine. CF
Nick G, Well then, go out and do something really stupid on a bike, get crushed by a car. And when it comes to charging the auto driver with a crime, we'll just let them off, because bikes shouldn't be held to the same laws, which also means, they don't get the same protections. The laws are there for EVERYONE . . . From 2 wheels on up.
People aren't vehicles. It was decided long ago that bicycles were vehicles, and so rules made to protect people from vehicles apply to bicycles. The people who ride bicycles seem to want ALL the rights of a pedestrian, AND all the rights, but none of the restrictions, of any other vehicle user.
Cyclists are road users like everyone else driving a vehicle. So they should have to pass a test, get a licence, pay road tax and take out minimum third party insurance. Simple!
I'm very rare.stop and all red lights and if anyones using zebra crossing i stop for them as well.it's why i'm still here after riding for over 55 years
pay some road tax and get insurance if you plow into a driver its no cost to you few cuts and scrapes back on the road again the next day the damage you do to the cars comes out of the drivers own pocket the trauma as well knowing they hit somebody
Actually you don't have the same rules as a car. You should go back and re-read the Highway Code...you'll note that there are sections applicable to cyclists, some applicable to motorists, some applicable to all...but certainly it is not true that cyclists and motorists have the same rules to follow
Cycling to work the other night the lights went amber so I stopped at short notice, no not because I thought that I'd get free amber nectar, a pedestrian was waiting to cross. He looked at me and then on my right a righteous brother sped thru on the by then red. The original post was 7 years ago and nothing has changed.
i was crossing a toucan crossing when four cyclists came down, three went through the red one stopped, i took out my phone and took a photo of him and said i can't believe you stopped the look on his face was priceless .
I've known cyclists in Holland to be fined for jumping red lights. Once upon a time we used to have fairly decent law and order here in the UK, but now we just mostly have thug Police, especially in the MET.
A nice safe little arrest with paperwork to cover a large portion of your shift, instead of actually dealing with burglaries, knife crime and issues that really do affect the law abiding public. Sure, the cyclist broke the law, but ffs, if you're as understaffed and up against is as you claim, this isn't serving your turn.. Next video, total takedown of man dropping cigarette but in a built up area.. Plod nowadays, please.. Bike man jumps lights..? Sad twats...
They really do think they are above the law I have seen them on a580 and Rainford bypass on the main road and they have a 8ft wide cycle path beggers beleif
We have shared bike paths too. They are limited to 10km/hr by law. And I typically ride at 30+ km /hr. So the speed restriction as a fraction of the normal cruising speed is like limiting the M1 motorway to a maximum of 30km/hr for motorvehicles. But don't get started on what happens at intersections. Where if you are on a bike path you have zero rights. Turning vehicles are free to mow you down. So of COURSE a serious rider must be on the road. Duhh.
Here in Bentonville, AR, because we are trying to be the mt bike capital of the world, they city made a ruling that bikers don't have to follow traffic laws.
The police can issue a fixed penalty notice of £30 for red light jumping. I don't believe that a cyclist can be banned due to not having to take a test / agree to conditions similar to a driving license.
Hi Pat, how's it going? May I feature this clip on my channel? If so, could you tell me where this happened? And do you have any further comment on the incident? Thanks for your consideration

My God, the horror, imagine the death and carnage that cyclist could have caused by cycling recklessly through that junction at, what, 6mph possibly. Luckily the boys in blue were right there on the spot to hopefully throw the book at this career criminal, the stories they must be able to tell their colleagues when they get back to the station. I feel much safer on the roads with law enforcement of this high standard especially now all other serious crime has apparently been eradicated. Let's be the only country in the world that requires number plates and insurance for cyclists and get them to pay the non-existent road tax (which drivers don't pay). That'll definitely stop this sort of thing.
Just a couple of months ago a cyclist was convicted of causing a death, having cycled at speed into a pedestrian, who later died. Cycles can kill too...as do scooters, mopeds etc. If you start saying it's OK for cyclists to ignore red lights then why should motorists stop? For the record I am a lifelong cyclist...but one of those who does stop at red lights. I loathe those who disregard other's safety for their own personal gain. Confiscate their bikes, make them pay a hefty fine to get it back...that'll teach them...
As one of the majority of bike users who doesn't run red lights this is great to see. Now can the Police also tackle the drivers who run red lights and actually kill people? I see 10x more drivers running red lights than people on bikes - but red lights don't apply if you are late and it only just turned red a few seconds earlier right drivers?
Derek ok that’s absolute tosh. Way more cyclist do it on average than cars. You know why, there are more cars on the road. What’s the worst that could happen to a cyclist running a red light? I known for a driver it could means points or even losing their licence.
@@Anonymous56657 You can't say it's tosh when it's what I see, it's not an opinion, it's what I see. Maybe you live in London where there are 730,000 bike journeys per day? When you go along slowly in a car you might be over/under taken by 500 people on bikes in a 30 min journey and granted you might see 10 or 20 go through red lights as you sit at them. You will also see 5 or so vehicles go through red lights on a similar journey but as you haven't been overtaken by 500 vehicles on that journey the comparison you're making isn't sound. You need to stand at a set of traffic lights and count how many vehicles go through on red - you can't go by how many you see from your car. So you think the problem is bikes because so see a lot more bikes go through traffic light junctions than vehicles on a set journey in the city. The worst that could happen to a 'cyclist' running a red light is instant death. That's why the vast majority don't do it.
On a slow drive through a city you see more different bike users going through junctions than different vehicles on the same journey because bike traffic flows around you while the same vehicles largely stay infront and behind you. So you are seeing 500 different bike users and maybe only 100 different vehicle users around you going in your direction (where you can see the light colours). You may think more bikes go through red but it's not the case. Stand at a set of busy lights and you will see vehicles go through red on every cycle. On my commute I've seen less than 5 bikes go through reds this year but many tens of vehicles including huge trucks.

Until 10 years ago that is exactly how it was defined here. But they wanted to introduce special restrictions on the bike which they could not do if the bike was just another road vehicle. So they deliberately redefined it to NOT be a road vehicle for the purposes of the act. Motorists have campaigned for things, get what they asked for, then complain about the result. wonderful.
My money is on license plates or disks being required for cycles, disability scooters and e scooters in the next few years. Then the councils can levy a tax.

@@fishbmw The motorcyclist should have stopped when the amber light came on he had plenty of time to do so. He could have been pursued by the police. @@him050 You'll find the roads were built quite a while ago, and the US traffic system doesn't work
It does make sense... Until you think about pedestrians.
I used to live in the States, and "right turn on red" just means more pedestrians get hit, because the motorists assume they have right of way when they don't.
Not much fun if you're a kid, especially not against 'Murican SUVs and trurks.
The offence should of been riding with undue care and attention..for failing to spot the cop car..🙂
And you sentence should read "The offence should HAVE been riding with undue care and attention..for failing to spot the cop car.."
It should carry same punishment as all other vehicles
Why?
The penalty should be determined by the weight of the vehicle & the speed it was going. Mass x Velocity = Damage.
Fine is normally around £30 but it can be as high as £1000 plus 6 points on the driving license.

As a driver if we run red light etc is 3 points and a fine, best they get is a talking to, can someone explain why this should be the case
Yeah easily. You get Points and a fine as you need a revocable license to drive a car, if you are deemed to be a dangerous driver the licence can be taken away, on a bike you don't have a licence and so therefor just get the fine part. Why do you need a licence for a car and not a bike ? Ability to cause damage.

Westminster City Council did a study and found that it was the pedestrian who was the party at fault in 60% of bike/ped accidents. So whilst it's not unreasonable to think that cyclists (just like all road users) should be accountable, it also seems reasonable that something should be done about the pedestrians that may well be causing the majority of accidents. Do you have any suggestions?
@@roaduser6438 no excuse, cyclists and drivers need to start behaving and lookout for pedestrians, as a cyclist I’ve encountered pedestrians like you described tho guess what I spotted the danger half way up the road before I encountered them as I observe my surroundings.
Just the other day I seen someone running, school children just got out running along beside them at the edge near the road so , had my finger on my horn ready for him when he jumps out onto the side of the road to run around them so I can give him a quick beep just to let him know they is a cyclist approaching from behind and 1 minute later a quick beep, and ready to break, tho just slowing down was enough it’s things like this these red light jumpers are also doing wrong not looking out for potential dangers just racing threw red lights oblivious
@@insoft_uk "no excuse" Do you think I made an excuse? If so what? I'm just looking for people to have balanced views.
"I observe my surroundings" Most people do to a greater or lesser degree.
You appear to have missed the question at the end of my previous comment. You clearly want road users to be accountable. What do you suggest we do to make pedestrians more accountable? You can't solely be thinking it's cyclists that need increased accountability as that would appear biased.
Your comment about red light jumpers does not relate to what we see in the video. The cyclist stopping, looking and going across slowly with the green man.
It is of course worth noting the 3yr Paris trial that concluded that allowing cyclists to pass through some red lights led to a reduction in the number of collisions. This proves that red light running is not inherently risky, but it is of course illegal. I look forward to the laws being reviewed. None of this is to excuse reckless red light running of course.
And they wonder why they have a bad name...
They should have their licence taken away from them.....Oh wait, what licence..... But seriously if they do have a driving licence it should be endorsed and pay a fine.

In France apparently the law is that a cyclist can get points on his car licence... we're quite backward here in the UK.
Nick G, bicycles are vehicles, not pedestrians. If they are to be operated on roadways, then they MUST follow vehicle traffic laws.
Nick G even using that warped logic, pedestrians shouldn’t cross on a red man, so why should cyclists go through red lights?
People aren't vehicles.
It was decided long ago that bicycles were vehicles, and so rules made to protect people from vehicles apply to bicycles.
The people who ride bicycles seem to want ALL the rights of a pedestrian, AND all the rights, but none of the restrictions, of any other vehicle user.
It’s all car user’s fault. Cyclists are perfect. 💀💀💀💀💀
Kind of shocking how many actually run the lights
I ride bikes and drive a car, the lights are red for a reason therefore I stop.
Let's be fair, how about a cyclist gets a red light jump every time a car driver breaks the speed limit.
stupid remark, are you jelous that cars can go fast without much effort from the driver, unlike some saddo on a cycle that has to pedal like f*ck
Use the road use the lights simple
Follow the laws of the road.
The copper couldn't really ignore that could he! I bet the cops were annoyed at having to deal with such an idiot.
Magic.
It's because cyclist's helmets are too small. They need to pull out the brains to fit the helmet..
In Vietnam the offender would be taken straight to an ATM.
Wish that was the case in the UK!
Cyclists are road users like everyone else driving a vehicle. So they should have to pass a test, get a licence, pay road tax and take out minimum third party insurance. Simple!
I'm very rare.stop and all red lights and if anyones using zebra crossing i stop for them as well.it's why i'm still here after riding for over 55 years
Here it cost 100€-300€ to cross a red light with bike so i just wait to safe my money
I think I slowly went through a crossing where everyone visible had finished crossing but the light was still red.
A bicycle is recognized as a vehicle. When riding a bicycle on the road you have the same rights and the same rules as a car.
pay some road tax and get insurance if you plow into a driver its no cost to you few cuts and scrapes back on the road again the next day the damage you do to the cars comes out of the drivers own pocket the trauma as well knowing they hit somebody
Actually you don't have the same rules as a car. You should go back and re-read the Highway Code...you'll note that there are sections applicable to cyclists, some applicable to motorists, some applicable to all...but certainly it is not true that cyclists and motorists have the same rules to follow
Well you can't jump the light with a police car in front of you. You have to get next to it first.
lets level the playing field registration please
@Toographictosayontelevision why if cyclists can grass cars for breaking the law why not the other way around and don't get personal .

If the police are not satisfied with the ID they can, and often do arrest the individual.
Most people carry a debit card or phone.
I have to give him credit, at least he stopped first. In America, they just blindly fly through daring you to hit them.
What can the police do though? Points on his license? What license? Fine him? Have to get some ID out of him first.
Duhh.
Well that was silly.
He didn't break any laws

His only mistake was stopping for the pigs.
That's what should happen to all cyclists that BLATANTLY DISOBEY!!! the law like this & believe me that's the MAJORITY of them unfortunately.
It's not the majority...but it's definitely higher percentage in cities
Here in Bentonville, AR, because we are trying to be the mt bike capital of the world, they city made a ruling that bikers don't have to follow traffic laws.

Seems like I owe some cyclist an apology, they're even more stupid than we thought by doing that in full view of the police.
What do police do? can they issue FPN? , can cyclist be banned? , can cyclist have cycle seized?
The police can issue a fixed penalty notice of £30 for red light jumping.
I don't believe that a cyclist can be banned due to not having to take a test / agree to conditions similar to a driving license.
Hi Pat, how's it going? May I feature this clip on my channel? If so, could you tell me where this happened? And do you have any further comment on the incident? Thanks for your consideration

in Liverpool delivery cyclists are allowed to go through red traffic lights because they are carrying hot food

But what we saw was well worth it!
@builder1a lol if you can't even reply with a sensible point of view that's fine, I know who's full of bullshit. :)

i wonder if a bicycle will ever be defined as a “road vehicle”.
Until 10 years ago that is exactly how it was defined here. But they wanted to introduce special restrictions on the bike which they could not do if the bike was just another road vehicle. So they deliberately redefined it to NOT be a road vehicle for the purposes of the act. Motorists have campaigned for things, get what they asked for, then complain about the result. wonderful.
