    so I ordered this little solar charger a couple weeks ago. It works awesome. I just finished charging up a 6000 milliamp hour battery and now I'm working on my Samsung smartphone. I'm quite convinced that outside of refrigeration and running a furnace, this is all a person would need for a minimalist lifestyle. I'm totally impressed and you just can't beat $59 plus shipping.

    I have a goal zero yeti 400 chained to an extra battery with about 150 watts of solar for my battery. I also have a similar portable charger, I use it all the time to charge my smaller batteries. It gives me peace of mind that I can still charge up my smaller devices even when I for whatever reason cannot utilize my main battery. I have also seen your comments regarding your experience with goal zero. That sucks, I've had mine for over 4 years and it's still going strong. Although building your own is way cheaper, I need the portability it affords. I use it camping as well for emergency preparedness in my home. Thanks for the review, always gives me new ideas to meet my needs.

    Wow, this is great Jamie. That solar panel is a tremendous thing. What if you are stuck out in the middle of nowhere, your car battery dies, snow all around your or you are in the middle of the dessert... the solar panel will save the day. Not to mention that it could be used specifically for your cell phone and other items. That would be wonderful to have to keep your phone charged. I think that every woman should have one for safety purposes.

    I have a similar one I bought at REI, GoalZero is the brand. It seems yours has the same charging output, but mine only has two panels that folds into the size of a mini-Ipod. I use it when I backpack, I used it when I walked the Camino de Santiago last year. I can only speak for mine, it worked amazingly. I dug it out last week to start traveling in my truck again. Good stuff!

    this thing is made to house a battery pack, which connects to it's internal usb port. The battery pack can charge your devices later on. No need to leave your cel, tablet or whatever out in the hot sun. this thing has an internal charge regulator, by the way. cool shit, eh?

    Looks like a good product for phone/tablet charging, but I'm inclined to go with the Anker panel. Suaoki may be fine, but have never used them. Both companies have 18 month warranties, but Anker also have a 30 day money back/no questions asked return policy). Anker is in the business of batteries and chargers, so I tend to go with a known entity.
    Whatever panel you buy, consider using it to charge a fat power bank instead of your phone/pad directly -- keep sensitive devices out of the sun.
    Great review, as always, Jamie.

    25 watts, 12 volts equals 2.08 amps. It is a basic USB charger. I have an older, less capable one, I always thought that having the device being charged in the sun getting hot was a bad idea. So you should make sure the phone or tablet is sitting in as cool a place as possible while charging. Heat slows the charging down. One thing it could be used for is for charging a small storage battery that you could use later to charge your devices. Once again, keep the battery in as cool a place as possible.

    • @rrowdyrogers707
      @rrowdyrogers707 7 лет назад

      Yes, keep the devices you are charging out of the sun or you can fry them to the point of no return.

    • @enigmaticnomadics
      @enigmaticnomadics  7 лет назад +4

      Yes, John. The manual claims 5 amps max at 25 watts. I understand your math also. All I know is that it charged both devices at the same time, which I didn't expect. Also, I tested the equipment in very cool temperatures which I think helped me lose sight of your very important point. We need to keep our electronics out of the direct sunlight and heat. Even if that means placing them under a folded up towel. Thanks for the reminder.

    • @stringbender57
      @stringbender57 7 лет назад +1

      John Bruce - I am confused. Since this is a 25 watt panel providing 5 volts as a USB charger, wouldn't it be 5 amps just as Jamie stated the manual indicates? 25 watts divided by 5 volts = 5 amps

      Not sure about Goal Zero equipment. *Repeated comment response* This is a sensitive topic for me. I considered heavily whether or not to mention my past experiences with Goal Zero in the video and in the end decided against it. I do not like to down anything or anybody. We all have ups and downs. The fact is I invested a few hundred dollars in Goal Zero products in 2012 as I began the nomadic lifestyle. My experience was a series of multiple equipment failures and poor customer service from them. In the end I returned what I could and had a hard time even giving away what I couldn't return. Maybe this was a very isolated experience and the problems were resolved, but I would not do business with them again.

    I've got a 21w Anker that's pretty much the same thing. Charging up a battery bank with these panels is probably the best way to go, as you can still charge your phone from the bank, but have other options as well, like USB powered light bulbs, or night lights, etc. The cables make a big difference too. Cables you get at the convenience store counter are usually junk, and won't flow enough power to feed high drain smartphone batteries. Anker makes a good cable called power core that makes a huge difference. Using the shortest cable that is practical for your situation also helps ( a 3 foot vs. a 6 foot). I'm not affiliated with anker,.. I've just had good experience using their solar, batteries, and cables. Stay away from fuel patriot batteries. Their stuff is junk!

I'm not able to work but I do sell stuff mostly my stuff to run the group and pay bills. I'm gonna try to get one before spring. but thanks for the review. god bless.

Well they were in the truck on the dash was shady for minute lol but went to go get both shut down. Thank god they had a shut off deal were until they cooled off couldn't use. Didn't take long 30 min. But that happen 2 times yea we never learn and sun does move and shad to lol. But again thanks sir. God bless.

    $50 not a bad price especially if you are out there and need to recharge them go pro's. Not best to leave your LCD in the sun if you are charging your cell place it under that panel so it will be in shade. Excellent for a guy that is using pedal power or if you have a Paul Elkins inspired camper you can charge your stuff and keep in touch.
    I tell people this is the best time use to be you wanted to let people know you were ok you had to call collect and ask for FRED they would say sorry wrong number and if you worked it out in advance you sent them a message just with who you asked for. Fred I made it I got fifty dollars to hold me over Ted I am down to my last $20 . Yes we had a lot of not knowing back in the day. Today you can post a video for FREE on the www and nobody thinks 2x about it. You don't even need a cell phone you can have a tablet as long as you can get a little wifi you can keep in touch VOIP one needs a better connection for it but you can still get your messages this way.

    25 Watts is more than one thinks....I've charged 2-12 volt heavy marine batteries...for a camper situation to full charge, from a "low to fair" notification status (I know this is unobjective), so,....It's a
    'time and surface area equation". If you're not time urgent..and have decent sun...just lay out any sized panel to charge batteries over time.
    A 25 Watt panel....to charge batteries, would actually already need a "charge controller",...to NOT allow overcharging of one's larger batteries over time. An Iphone/Pad is nothing...for a 25 Watt panel,...even both would be easy for 25 Watts.
    If you have a multiple battery setup like mine....just "pig-tail" some battery clamp "stub-outs" near your array of batteries...to facilitate easy solar connections. Charging connecting, then takes a mere 5 seconds...but always use a charge controller with your solar arrays.

      Some blm allows burying it. Some doesn't, such as Moab. There are dump stations at many gas stations too. Several folks bag it with kitty litter and throw it away in town. I prefer a porta potty and my dogs will seek it out if I don't bury it very deep so I prefer the hole digging over the dog washing if you catch my drift. lol

    This product is "temporarily not available" on Amazon. Buyer beware of trying to get a defective unit repaired. Ain't gonna happen. No customer service.

      This is a sensitive topic for me BigBlue Glide.

      Sorry to hear that I have several products from them and used my yeti 400 at several biker rallies while tent camping, left it in the rain, hail, storms and it worked great never an issue. But all I was powering was cells, cameras, portable speaker and a laptop. But that's why its good to get different opinions. Have you used any other band that makes systems for base camping? Thanks.

      Man. I gotta tell you I absolutely love my Honda E2000i generator. It is amazingly quiet and I feel so much more confident of being able to handle a week of clouds and rain with that thing. I have an isolator for
      my alternator so I can always idle my engine and pull juice in, but nothing compares to the Honda in conjunction with my Stanley 25 amp smart charger. Adding those items was a game changer. The 1000i would probably be just fine for occasional tent camping. Best of luck out there.
