Solo Camping with my Puppy - Half Tent Shelter, Camp Cooking, Bushcraft Skills, Canadian Wilderness

- In this video, I take Naomi out on her first overnight camping trip in the remote Canadian wilderness. This time I set up camp under a poplar stand on the shore of a remote lake - the same one I passed while hunting grouse in my last video. While at camp, I set up a lean-to shelter using half of my surplus pup tent, cooked some venison steaks on the grill after building a fire with my fire-steel and a shavings pile, explored the area some more while collecting water and rose hips for tea, which Naomi took advantage by going swimming getting herself soaking wet and muddy, lashed together a quick tripod and pot hanger and steeped some tea using my new teapot, and of course more of the usual life in the bush - bucking wood, reading, keeping the fire stoked, playing with the dog, and more.
Enjoy the new video and keep an eye out for more content coming soon.

Enjoy the new video everyone! Let me know what you think it was that Naomi saw/heard on this trip. I think it was a cougar, but maybe it was bigfoot? Keep an eye out for the next video releasing in two weeks. I finally filmed my first solo camping trip off a horse after years of learning what I needed to know and getting my camera, saddle/tack, and camping gear set up to do it. It was a cold and exhausting trip, but it looks like it will be a great video!
Thanks for watching 👍

Good job on rose hip tea. Wayyyy more vitamin C than citrus fruits.

I always like your videos. The fun fact is , even if I watch it in 2X speed,it's always the same enjoyment and Education.

You are soooo soooo soooo incredibly talented. There is NO comparison!
Thank you!
I'm just now catching up. Excellent video. That is some fine country you are in.
Thanks! It sure is - can't wait to get back out there
Great video Nicholas, a tarp tent overnighter. Your axe is as sharp as your knife, and your knife is razor sharp! Your pup did a great job of alerting you to danger. Thanks much for sharing your videos!
Thank you! More to come soon
That is a cool kettle!👍🏻
I agree!
Another great adventure. 👍
Awesome stuff, love your content!
Glad to hear it! More coming soon
I'm thinking bear or cougar. Very nice my friend 🤠
Thanks!
I was thinking cougar as well. Good thing you had your guarddog with you. Steak looked pretty awesome.
Thanks for the video
Good thing! Wouldn't have known otherwise. She's a natural at it 👍 Thanks for watching!
Great adventure, beautiful landscapes and views from the heights, I myself have recently started documenting my adventures, I love this direction. Good luck on your adventures. Greetings from a Belarusian tourist! 🔥
I think she heard AND Smelled it.,.. possibly even saw ... I think it was a Felidae !!
Some r very curious about the dog. If u was alone once the
"Man" smell is found in general they all rather go around the camp at a distance.
Even the camp fire smells will detour them .. unless ya made a juicy moose steak 🥩 fer dinner lol 🤭 😆
Great video my northern amigo 🤠
Peace and keep on rocking the free world 👍🏽
Makes sense! With the directions Naomi was growling throughout the night, it likely did exactly that and went around my camp. All of it was on the wooded side too, not towards the shore of the lake
“Porque Deus amou o mundo de tal maneira que deu o seu Filho unigênito, para que todo aquele que nele crê não pereça, mas tenha a vida eterna.” (João 3:16)💕🙏
Love the video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Oh man! That some quality stuff. So much dedication and creativity in this video. You always amaze me. 🤠✌️ Loved when you tried to destroy that tree and then F it and took down with an axe haha 👍 Perfect! 👋🇱🇹
That tree was an absolute pain in the ass 🤣 Glad you liked the video!
Assistindo mais um belo vídeo seu aqui brother, joinha 268 para o seu canal, e um abraço meu aqui do Brasil/Rio de Janeiro para você e a sua família.
Obrigada!
🌲🌲⛺🐕🔥🌲🌲 Awesome video!
It'll be even better when you come along 🤠
You could consider a folding pruning saw of, say, 8” or 10” blade, and a bit shorter axe handle too. They are lighter, and do the jobs you were doing. A folding pruning saw goes into action quicker than assembling a buck saw. Can be put away much faster too. Just a thought.

goooooooood!
Hey, pretty cool old school and simple kept. Love it. More please! Got a new subscriber!
Welcome to the channel! Glad you enjoyed
Awesome video, and a great outing for Naomi's first trip! What a great pup, protecting your camp, as they always do. I take my dog ( a 10 lb Chiweenie - half Chihuahua/half Dachshund, or weiner dog = Chi Weenie) and he (Marshall is his name) is camp security letting me know if anything gets close at any time. I just need him as an "alarm" and I'll do the rest to protect camp. I don't know what Naomi saw, but she definitely smelled and heard something to react the way she did. Glad you didn't have any problems during the night with something getting into camp. As a fellow dog lover, I am still educating myself about what human foods dogs can eat... and, I should mention the garlic you have in your seasoning is not good for dogs to ingest (the salt/pepper/paprika are okay, though). Dogs metabolize ingredients differently than humans, and some are harmful to them, while safe for us. I just search "Can dogs eat ______" and type in different ingredients/herbs/spices to get the answer before feeding my dog. It's also important to calculate how much for their body weight (i.e. one teaspoon of oatmeal per 20 lb of dog weight, etc). Anyway, real good video, Naomi looked super happy, and the quick shelter looked comfortable for an overnight by the campfire. Good to see you out camping and I'll be looking for the next one. Cheers! Pete - KI7LIL
Thank you! Nothing better than having a dog around at camp. I've missed it since Comet (the sheep looking one in my older videos) passed away. I am aware about the garlic, but I figured most of the powder would burn off on the fire and wouldn't bother her, and since I couldn't taste it on the steaks myself I didn't bother worrying about it. I carry her normal dog food with me as well to feed her with off camera (I don't find it interesting enough to film). The next video is camping off a horse, and will be pretty interesting I think!
@@wituikbws No problem. The few pieces you gave her might not have had any seasoning at all... it's just something to be aware of. Dogs can have raw chicken or steak (i.e. for dinner mixed with kibble) and then unseasoned scrambled eggs (i.e. for breakfast mixed with kibble), and that might be interesting to film to show other camping/traveling dog owners what is safe to feed their dogs?! Plus supplying lots of drinking water for them. I've been on a few horse rides but never camped using one... can't wait to see how that trip goes! Cheers! Pete
That is a great idea! That would definitely be a lot more interesting then some puppy chow 😆
@@wituikbws Sorry to hear bout yr passing of the sheep dog ...
🐶
Wow, What an eventful excursion! What a blessing to have your new pup by your side to back you up... What's his name? 😊 I have a 10×10 so I wouldn't be able to pitch that particular set up, but I really liked your tarp configuration. And man oh man, what a beautiful crisp blue sky! Around here it's hard to get a glimpse of the blue sky, cause the powers that be are always pretty busy covering it up with their chemtrails. Anyway, thanks for the pleasant camp out brother 😁 Stay safe and I'll see ya next time!
Witaj Przyjacielu dziękuję za wspólną przygodę pozdrawiam serdecznie 🤗👍👏💪🐺🐾🏞️🥇☕🍰
Witam, dzięki za oglądanie!
I believe thats half of the pup tent yr using on this vid 😉
nut'in like the outdoors and mans BEST FRIEND !!!!!!
i can relate about the guard dog . But Traky doesn't sweat much unless its CLOSE. close enough for my lite beam to reflect in its eyes. Naomi will get more relaxed as she gets older. But a friend once told me he believed female dogs STAY much more "guarded' than male dogs based on his mutli of dogs thatgo out w him. But we don't have a wide base in wich we can make a solid conclusion. anyone out there plz jump in as we r curious about that one !!!
makes for a more interesting adventure however when ur pet runs into nature on IT'S ground !!!! She sure loves the water !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GO PUPPY POWER 8) !!!!
She sure does! I hope she stays a good guard dog as she gets older. I like having her pay attention to what's going on around me 👍
I just bought a 24 " council tool axe ,was cool to see how you used yours around camp . Do you find it a good length or would you rather a hatchet or something longer ?
I like the length, but I think it is the smallest I would go for an axe. I prefer a 28" which is what this axe use to have on it until I broke the handle in an older video. I couldn't find another 28" sadly, but the 24" seems to be working just as good. I got tons of use out of it in the next video with no issues 👍
Thanks for the adventure. Is that a Marlin 45-70 or 30-30 . Great dog calm but still playful.
Marlin .45-70, it's what I usually carry on my trips 👍
What kind of pack is that?
Custom pack I made, unfortunately it didn't hold up and is now retired

Goodmorning
What part of the Chilcotin you in?
I’ve seen cougars around Aniheim Lake!
Good scenery!
Nice dog, what breed?
Keep up the good work!
Good morning! West Chilcotin is as specific as I like to get. The dog is a mix of Kangal, Great Pyrenees, and Border Collie, but definitely got more of the Kangal genetics 👍
Nicholas … Another excellent video!!! Enjoyed it immensely!!! Kind sir, I laughed out loud on the next morning when you lit your fire with your lighter; you proved your bushcraft bonafides with the ferro rod the night before and you went with expediency the next morning; I would have done the same thing (with a fireplace lighter) as I’m not a pretty sight and sometimes grumpy until I get my first cup of coffee!!! Anyways, love your channel, am a reasonably new subscriber, love Naomi and can’t wait to see your next video!!! Question, kind sir: what breed is Naomi? Until your next video, take care, be safe, best wishes & God bless!!! Chuck Knight from Buffalo, Texas, USA. 🤠👨🌾✝️🙏🖖👍👋🐩🦌
Glad you got a kick out of that! I like to change it up when I light my fires every now and then, but I almost always go for the lighter or matches, especially in the morning. Glad you're enjoying the channel! Naomi is a mix of Kangal, Great Pyrenes, and Border Collie, but she looks and acts most like a Kangal. Thanks for the comment!
@@wituikbwsNicholas … For a hiking and companion dog, you couldn’t do much better with that mix!!! Wasn’t familiar with the kangal breed (spell check isn’t either). Looked it up and learned something new today. Thanks, buddy!!! God bless!!! Chuck. 👨🌾
What kind of dog is she, she's beautiful
Any ferro rod tips?
Not really honestly, I don't put much thought into it
Yes , don't lose them if ya bring one and practice with one before relying on it before going out into the field...jmho
Wear do I get that knife
It's a custom design I made and had built by Mike Jones Knife & Tool out of Quesnel, BC. He makes a few of them now and then, so go check him out!
Q: if you’re out there with your wife and she’s filming and you keep it off camera to stay “on brand” who’s to say people wouldn’t like your content together?
If I am out there with anyone on trips like this, then they're on camera with me, and if there is no one else then I am alone. It's funny you mention that though, because the reason I left the firepit together is because I am planning to return to this camp and film another video there with my girlfriend! 😁
@@wituikbws. ..cool bc you guys make a good team.. I saw a 4yr old video then I jumped to this...I was like maybe him and Marie aren't together but grt video
@@lawoull.6581 We aren't together anymore, haven't been for ages now. On a side note, I decided to take this camp down so there wont be another video there
@@wituikbws understandable brah.
.grt videos
PS your dog is going to get very sick drinking that swamp water. I learned the hard way.
That water is run off from a lake and has consistent flow, so I don't worry about it. If she does get sick (like I have from other lakes by accident), I'll just use a deworm on her like I did myself 🤣
@@wituikbws you b craaaazy!
Your printed messages are not up long enough to read. Time them longer, then add a bit more?

And there to small to read as well ...just saying . All n all still a good video 📹
Small print in the vid is way to small, hard to read !!!
Noooo wait I saw the breath of a camera person in this one!! Ooooooo you cheater!
Just me and the dog in this one! I don't have any help with the camera work unless there is someone else shown to be there in the video, like in some of my old ones
