Solo Camping with my Puppy - Half Tent Shelter, Camp Cooking, Bushcraft Skills, Canadian Wilderness

  • In this video, I take Naomi out on her first overnight camping trip in the remote Canadian wilderness. This time I set up camp under a poplar stand on the shore of a remote lake - the same one I passed while hunting grouse in my last video. While at camp, I set up a lean-to shelter using half of my surplus pup tent, cooked some venison steaks on the grill after building a fire with my fire-steel and a shavings pile, explored the area some more while collecting water and rose hips for tea, which Naomi took advantage by going swimming getting herself soaking wet and muddy, lashed together a quick tripod and pot hanger and steeped some tea using my new teapot, and of course more of the usual life in the bush - bucking wood, reading, keeping the fire stoked, playing with the dog, and more.
    Enjoy the new video and keep an eye out for more content coming soon.

    Enjoy the new video everyone! Let me know what you think it was that Naomi saw/heard on this trip. I think it was a cougar, but maybe it was bigfoot? Keep an eye out for the next video releasing in two weeks. I finally filmed my first solo camping trip off a horse after years of learning what I needed to know and getting my camera, saddle/tack, and camping gear set up to do it. It was a cold and exhausting trip, but it looks like it will be a great video!
    Thanks for watching 👍

    I think she heard AND Smelled it.,.. possibly even saw ... I think it was a Felidae !!
    Some r very curious about the dog. If u was alone once the
    "Man" smell is found in general they all rather go around the camp at a distance.
    Even the camp fire smells will detour them .. unless ya made a juicy moose steak 🥩 fer dinner lol 🤭 😆

      Makes sense! With the directions Naomi was growling throughout the night, it likely did exactly that and went around my camp. All of it was on the wooded side too, not towards the shore of the lake

    You could consider a folding pruning saw of, say, 8” or 10” blade, and a bit shorter axe handle too. They are lighter, and do the jobs you were doing. A folding pruning saw goes into action quicker than assembling a buck saw. Can be put away much faster too. Just a thought.

    Awesome video, and a great outing for Naomi's first trip! What a great pup, protecting your camp, as they always do. I take my dog ( a 10 lb Chiweenie - half Chihuahua/half Dachshund, or weiner dog = Chi Weenie) and he (Marshall is his name) is camp security letting me know if anything gets close at any time. I just need him as an "alarm" and I'll do the rest to protect camp. I don't know what Naomi saw, but she definitely smelled and heard something to react the way she did. Glad you didn't have any problems during the night with something getting into camp. As a fellow dog lover, I am still educating myself about what human foods dogs can eat... and, I should mention the garlic you have in your seasoning is not good for dogs to ingest (the salt/pepper/paprika are okay, though). Dogs metabolize ingredients differently than humans, and some are harmful to them, while safe for us. I just search "Can dogs eat ______" and type in different ingredients/herbs/spices to get the answer before feeding my dog. It's also important to calculate how much for their body weight (i.e. one teaspoon of oatmeal per 20 lb of dog weight, etc). Anyway, real good video, Naomi looked super happy, and the quick shelter looked comfortable for an overnight by the campfire. Good to see you out camping and I'll be looking for the next one. Cheers! Pete - KI7LIL

      @wituikbws  2 года назад +2

      Thank you! Nothing better than having a dog around at camp. I've missed it since Comet (the sheep looking one in my older videos) passed away. I am aware about the garlic, but I figured most of the powder would burn off on the fire and wouldn't bother her, and since I couldn't taste it on the steaks myself I didn't bother worrying about it. I carry her normal dog food with me as well to feed her with off camera (I don't find it interesting enough to film). The next video is camping off a horse, and will be pretty interesting I think!

    • @peterkunka2694
      @peterkunka2694 2 года назад +2

      @@wituikbws No problem. The few pieces you gave her might not have had any seasoning at all... it's just something to be aware of. Dogs can have raw chicken or steak (i.e. for dinner mixed with kibble) and then unseasoned scrambled eggs (i.e. for breakfast mixed with kibble), and that might be interesting to film to show other camping/traveling dog owners what is safe to feed their dogs?! Plus supplying lots of drinking water for them. I've been on a few horse rides but never camped using one... can't wait to see how that trip goes! Cheers! Pete

What's his name? 😊 I have a 10×10 so I wouldn't be able to pitch that particular set up, but I really liked your tarp configuration. And man oh man, what a beautiful crisp blue sky! Around here it's hard to get a glimpse of the blue sky, cause the powers that be are always pretty busy covering it up with their chemtrails. Anyway, thanks for the pleasant camp out brother 😁 Stay safe and I'll see ya next time!

    i can relate about the guard dog . But Traky doesn't sweat much unless its CLOSE. close enough for my lite beam to reflect in its eyes. Naomi will get more relaxed as she gets older. But a friend once told me he believed female dogs STAY much more "guarded' than male dogs based on his mutli of dogs thatgo out w him. But we don't have a wide base in wich we can make a solid conclusion. anyone out there plz jump in as we r curious about that one !!!

    I just bought a 24 " council tool axe ,was cool to see how you used yours around camp . Do you find it a good length or would you rather a hatchet or something longer ?

    • @wituikbws
      @wituikbws  2 года назад +1

      I like the length, but I think it is the smallest I would go for an axe. I prefer a 28" which is what this axe use to have on it until I broke the handle in an older video. I couldn't find another 28" sadly, but the 24" seems to be working just as good. I got tons of use out of it in the next video with no issues 👍

Kind sir, I laughed out loud on the next morning when you lit your fire with your lighter; you proved your bushcraft bonafides with the ferro rod the night before and you went with expediency the next morning; I would have done the same thing (with a fireplace lighter) as I’m not a pretty sight and sometimes grumpy until I get my first cup of coffee!!!
