The photography community needs more encourament. Its all about gear and fighting about style and whats right or wrong. We tend to lose our joy we once had. Keep being a voice of reason. You are a breathe of fresh air, Sarah. Learn the rules like a pro, in order to break them like an artist like I always say. I feel a rant on my own channel about this topic comming soon. lol.
Hi Sarah, thank you for sharing this video. Negativity does very little to encourage people. I like to encourage people who are interested in photography. Encouragement can be positive and life giving.
Sarah, just found your channel and I subbed immediately!!!! Really love what you’re doing!!!! What you’re saying is perfect and what I’ve always said. Do not ever forget, we are artists!!! Some do weddings, landscape, portraits or street, etc. But never forget, the artist is in all of us!!!! Thanks!!!!
So, so true. And not just in the photography world. I don't have a photography channel/ page/whatever they are called. But I do have Facebook and it bothers me so bad when people make negative comments or make fun or other people's listing (like on the yard sale sites). If you don't like or agree with what they have listed, keep scrolling! Why do people feel the need to made negative comments when it doesn't affect them in the first place!
I've been a photographer since the 70s and from the time I started in this creative field, the energy around it was very masculine and full of chest-puffery. I'm not putting down men, I'm talking about "energy". A lot of women photographers have practiced this as well. Through the years I've gone in and out of being a photographer because of it. My attitude about photography has always been "do what you like and die happy." (a Henry Miller quote).
@@sarahlyndsay I'm going to be doing a few videos on the differences in learning photography in the 70s versus learning photography now. And about learning photography when there was only analog/film available.
Great talk Sarah! Other than Instagram, I don't use many other social medias such as TikTok, Twitter, etc. But I've seen a great deal of people are actually capable of creating beautiful arts using those platforms and I always admire them and their work. I guess there's always gonna be one of those people in the community who always spread the negative vibes around, I mean like..."you gotta chill, bro", LOL. 😅
Well said. There is so much opportunity and so many interesting things to find in cyberspace. It’s a shame that people can hide behind virtual anonymity to make nasty comments but ultimately it is a lesson to us. One nice comment is worth more than 100 nasty ones. And thank you for the lovely videos.
Thanks for speaking from the heart. I feel that years ago the photography community was more of a community. There was always encouragement and mentorship, but now with so many people that are "photographers", it is so often a "me vs. you" mentality instead of a "us" mentality. We all need to put ourselves aside and do what we can to nurture and foster growth in others, even if that means supporting them in doing something with their photography that we would not do with ours.
I agree with you completely Sarah. I find a lot of negativity in the photography world but I don't think it is just there. I have tried a few groups on Facebook relating to Photography. I have often threatened to just leave the groups and give up due to the sarcasm and rude comments I too often get when trying to participate. The whole world is angry right now it seems. Snobbery is rampant as well.
I'm with you both! I gave up on any sort of online group long ago because of people looking to be jerks rather than be helpful. I remember posting a photo saying "I am very happy with the composition, but I'd love for input on how to improve my technique to make it even better"...and someone of course had to complain they didn't like the composition.
Being that i am in the last generation of baby bommers, NFT's are a foreign concept. So I guess I am out of touch with that issue, as to the stigma of people being devalued because of it. I am old school. Life is short and people have become intitled and hide behind the vail of cyber anonymity. We used to have to talk to people either by phone or face to face. Which makes people less likely to speak thier minds in a harsh manner, because there is a physical emotional connection to the encounter. The internet has made people feel like they have power over others. Knowing your story. I am so proud of you for turning your gift into a creative vessel of inspiration and caring through photography. You found your strength of purpose and have become a becon of light and hope for anyone that needs some inspiration. Art is basically just an interpretation of emotion. No one can devalue an emotional perspective of interpretation. That is yours and yours alone. It takes strength and courage to block out all the "INTITLED" voices that, for no others reason, but to make themselve feel important ridiculing those that have a different mindset. You've come a long way Sarah! You deserve all the sucess in the world. You look and sound like someone that is truly happy with who she is. Well done!!
Hello Sarah, I'm not from the USA, I live in the UK. Often times I'm not sure about commenting on RUclips when I'm not certain of what I should say. I received a number of hate messages here on RUclips during the eruption in Iceland. I was asking legitimate questions, looking for information about the eruption and I was verbally attacked and it was an upsetting experience. I'm an amateur photographer, have been for most of my life. I'm now 69 approaching 70 and I keep on photographing landscapes. I never desired to be a professional because my work I don't feel was never good enough. I love my photography, always have and it will always be so very precious to me. I appreciate that it must be a challenge to be a professional photographer these days and everything that goes with it - good or bad. It must take great courage, sacrifice and determination and I admire that. I know there are a lot of people out there that use the media to attack and then disappear and for no apparent reason. I am so sorry to learn that such things are going on with photography and photographers. I don't understand why this is and it is a sad state of affairs. I see the work of professional photographers here on RUclips and I greatly enjoy it and have gained much pleasure and encouragement for seeing such a variety of work going on. I have only recently discovered your channel Sarah and I appreciate your frankness and your explanation of your style; it makes sense. My own style is that I don't have one except my love of natural landscapes and I'm still exploring who I am. I think it is a continuous journey and, in a way, I find that satisfying; the journey goes on. Always keep close to heart how you feel about your work because in every image that comes from the heart, there is a piece of you in it. I wish you well.
It's hard to encapsulate what is going on in our current society and culture in 10 minutes, but thanks for having a go at it from a glass-half-full perspective! Staying excited about life and your craft by openly listening, learning and embracing changes is the best approach!
God Bless you Sarah. When people ask me about my photography journey I tell them anyone can take a picture but how you compose and edit the photo is where the magic is. I also tell them you are taking a picture of a moment in time never to be recreated. Usually gets people thinking.
I was involved in photography since the early 90's I worked for all sorts of photographers on all sorts of jobs, commercial advertising, weddings and more. This thing where photographers are nice and share with others is a new thing trust it wasn't always like that. I found most of the people suspicions and always looking over there shoulders to see who was stealing ideas or clients from them. It pains me to say what I just did but it was my experience, there was a lot of negativity and isolation. Maybe because we all stuck in darkrooms sniffing chemicals or waiting for E6 chromes to come out of processor. That seems to be changing with the younger generation and that's a good thing. Best of luck.
That's the point, Sarah: there is no pure channel for photography. The purity is on the courage to experiment and show to yourself and the whole World what feeling a particular moment means. Wisdom comes through a critical thought over a "situation", an "expression" a "dream"... so lets encourage the people to create its art allowing us to walk through all the Path on a plural way !!! Namastê 🙏🏻
Very well put Sarah, the basic thing we as photographers should always remember is respect each others journey and lift each other up. Above everything, we are here for the art. Art above all.
Encouragement is always the best thing to do. It keeps people going with hope and dreams. I do landscapes mostly and sell the odd shot but really music is where I make my money as a songwriter and performer. I've always taken pictures for fun and really enjoy it. I'm sure like any of the arts making a living at it is hard. Life is an adventure and we learn along the way, the do's and don'ts. Putting people down to make you feel bigger, better or wiser, is the sign of a person who is insecure. Helping people along the road is really what I feel we are here for. It's really the easiest thing we can do for people. Sharing what we know can really help people with there life and then they can pass it on. Life is wonderful, love life and it will love you!
Unfortunately there always going to be those people that like to put down anyone that is making something of themself, you have to learn to put those negative thoughts and try your best enjoy what you do and stay safe
Yes, so true! How to have healthier discussion would probably be more fitting. I don’t like tik tok, but I feel very happy for my friend who is finding great success with their own. There are 2 aspects of this problem: some are just negative and can't stand others doing well without there permission, others don't understand the newer means such as NFT's. Also, there have been many good ideas that failed in the past that I am somewhat wary of these means staying power. Historically, there is tendency for them to be overhyped in the beginning and not really taking off.
So so true Jay! Thanks for adding this!! This stuff is so valuable for people to learn and then they can make the best decision for themselves. Hype plays a big role in this taking off.
Great video, I always comment positive things no matter how good or bad the video is or the content is, there is always something good to find. As someone with ADHD and is Autistic I have a lot of struggles, imposter syndrome being a big one, one of my biggest worries about starting a RUclips channel was the potential negativity, it held me back for years.
I don't know how you do it Sarah, the negativity thing I mean. Forty five years ago when I started playing with camera and photography processes there was a true community that helped each other, educating each other. We all experimented, figured things out and inspired each other through ideas and actual works. I noticed in the last five or so years there has been a lot of negative trolling in the online photo social media arena, mainly here on RUclips and some forums. It is the main reason I have not started my channel of wanting to offer up everything I have learned in photography from processes in the darkroom, freelancing in photojournalism, fine art photography to todays digital photography. I want to help new photographers with mastering the basic fundamentals as well as discuss other areas of photography... but every once in a while I get that one guy who is usually relatively new to the game - "mr. know-it-all because I have a Sony" person come in and try to argue my posts of things I have experienced, researched and learned over decades to be my photographic reality and real results, after which a back and forth ensues with it ending in me being called some names and being blamed for being so defensive. This is something I have to learn to address or take care of before I decide to make my first video... I just turned sixty this year and I feel I have a LOT to share before I leave this planet, lots of things that can help someone getting into photography (film or digital). I want to share what others shared with me when I started and continued to learn since, but I'm afraid that I will loose my sh*t on the first negative troll who tells me I don't know what I'm talking about or something.
I've been trying to figure out how to create a channel amongst all the "my gear is better than your gear" channels for the past ten-years! Finally decided to start uploading anyway and just see where it goes. I don't think the newbs have the "respect for their elders" that we did when we were learning. I say that tongue in cheek, but we really did respect our teachers, or those who could teach us. In spite of what I wrote in my own comment, and being one of two or three women photography majors in my class at art school, I had a lot of peer support as well as teacher support in my school. Even today I'm still connected with a lot of my fellow students, and some of them have had incredible photographic careers, and we all still support each other.
@@ARTIST-AT-LARGE I guess just jumping into the deep end of the RUclips pool is the only way to know. I agree with the peer respect of our vs. new generations. Things that I discussed and learned or shared with others Now has become contentious with new generations of shooters. Suddenly having to know Anything about fundamentals or how optics work is somehow not important to these graduating from smart phones. I tend to let them be and let the images speak for themselves, but every once in a while they will push my buttons... and like you said, the peer respect and the passionate drive to learn everything is not worth anything anymore. For those of us who lived thru the different photography eras, this is very sad. I'm not saying all are like this, there are some very awesome artists photographers out there like Sarah who are passionate and always learning their craft, Those are the ones I gravitate to and want to see do well. We all just need to keep spreading good inspiration to keep the art of photography alive and maybe those haters will come around..
Very good point! Photography is extremely versatile. What unites us as photographers are just two things: Light, without it we can't make images, and some kind of gear, whether it's a cellphone or a 6x9 folder from the 30's, to capture the light. This is what unites us, and allows us to create. There's really nothing wrong and nothing right. We think and work in our different ways, and acknowledging that, seeing what other photographers do, can only broaden our horizon. But that's what makes it interesting. Coming soon: @analogbrain
A lot if not most arguing in any subject comes down to a few things in my opinion. #1 insecurity, #2 jealousy and #3 pride. Unless it is constructive ignore it.
Personally I really dislike NFT's because ... well, many reasons, some of them fixable, some of them inherent in the basic idea of them. So I generally just avoid getting that in my online feeds but will sometimes join in discussions when these discussions are reasonable, not just angry people mouthing off. Just pushing each other into the ground never made anyone better.
Hello, your video motivates me a lot. I like trying new things. That's how I started taking infrared photos three years ago. I'm not a filmmaker, but maybe I'll make a few videos about it. I've thought about NFT before, but I have no experience with it at all. Stay as positive and engaged as you are! Greetings from Germany.
As Sean Tucker says, "He's never met a talented troll." Being Canadian like you are, it's almost a sport by some, that starts in Grade School, to pull down the people who are better than they are so that they either don't feel nor look so bad. It could also be a way to try to validate or elevate the appearance of the quality of the work that they are doing by pointing out the pitfalls in others' work. Same thing goes with the brand of cameras that they use. Some people feel that criticism of the camera brand that they use is a direct criticism of themselves for having purchased that brand. It probably boils down to a person's values. If they value "winning" (and there is nothing wrong with that as a value!) the choices and decisions that they make are reflected in their prioritization of the personal values that they have.
What you describe is not limited to the photography world online. I was very online other subjects for 10 years, including as a forum moderator for about half of that. I have withdrawn from all of that and closed and deleted all accounts. I have come to believe that the unreality of cyberspace encourages both narcissistic bullying and hyper sensitivity to criticism, not to mention ghettoizing and siloing people. It is very easy to end up in echo chambers, and then find them turning on their own, and then creating narrower silos.
Great clip! Positive and inspiring vibes.. absolutely agree.. everyone's photography journey is different and all have the right to experiment with what they choose..it can be temporary or not..and enjoy discovering and creating 📸☀️
My thought is that social media is in the toddler phase of its existence. Maybe algorithms encourage negativity as that drives engagement, but right now it's not always a great place to be. I guess I just don't understand why anyone would exert energy towards something they're not interested in. I don't watch reels. But why should I criticize someone having fun making them? I can use that time petting my cats!
Good subject Sarah - moving on to a positive subject of artistic fun. Have you tried Midjourney? Its a AI taxt to image generated program. As a travel photographer, I get a lot of photographic inspirition and fun too; to create. More fun times to create and share ideas. :o) J
There is no right or wrong, only preferences and personal opinions. People criticise others work for a few reasons. They might: - have overly strong opinions - be trying to assert their dominance or seniority - need their egos boosting with attention or approval -be trying to reassure themselves that their own choices are the correct ones -feel that they have put more effort in for less return than someone else And finally but more rarely -because they have a genuine concern for the safety or security of the person they are criticising or -because they think that you have more potential than your current approach will unlock It’s your path to walk, pay attention to the warning signs but remember some are their for your good and some are there for more selfish reasons. Just do your thing 🖤
People need to worry about themselves and not worry about what someone else does ! Too many people think they need to open their mouths in a negative way about other peoples work. You seem to be one who thinks too much about stupid shit and that in itself will cause anxiety.
No worries in my mind 😁🤸🏻♀️ I will always stand up to cruelty and bullying in the photography world and be a voice for people trying to find their way. Always.

Hi Sarah, brilliant chat and, for me, touched a chord, thank you. Enjoy Iceland😊
Agreed my friend 💛
You're amazing. Keep up the great work and content.
Well said, some people are just vile.
I’d love to hear how you define the NFT phenomenon. Thanks for always being awesome.
It’s coming soon!!! And wow what a ride it has been! 😂🔥💛
A quick question. What is NFT?
It’s definitely not limited to photographers people tend to take out their frustrations online 🤷🏽♂️
So so true my friend! Well said 💛
What is a NFT? I’m new to photography
Great encouragement for starting artists (not only photographers 😅).
Enjoy Iceland 🥶
hi sarah =)
Good subject Sarah - moving on to a positive subject of artistic fun. Have you tried Midjourney? Its a AI taxt to image generated program. As a travel photographer, I get a lot of photographic inspirition and fun too; to create. More fun times to create and share ideas. :o) J
Hehehe I did once and I made a yellow dress scene of course!
There is no right or wrong, only preferences and personal opinions.
People criticise others work for a few reasons. They might:
- have overly strong opinions
- be trying to assert their dominance or seniority
- need their egos boosting with attention or approval
-be trying to reassure themselves that their own choices are the correct ones
-feel that they have put more effort in for less return than someone else
And finally but more rarely
-because they have a genuine concern for the safety or security of the person they are criticising or
-because they think that you have more potential than your current approach will unlock
It’s your path to walk, pay attention to the warning signs but remember some are their for your good and some are there for more selfish reasons.
Just do your thing 🖤
Respect! 💛😊
People are negative about NFTs as a warning, it's a dead end.
Based on your belief in NFTs you should look up the Dunning-Kruger effect.
NFTs has been one wild ride!! I do hope in a week or so to give an update about what is happening over there 😊
People need to worry about themselves and not worry about what someone else does !
Always.
