    You certainly have a gift for clear communication... whether by voice or by hand gestures! Around here we call it "putting the cookies on the lower shelf." I absolutely love your "deep thoughts on 32nds"... there's an old saying in the biz - " 'Better' is the enemy of 'good enough' "... your philosophy on chasing 32nds perfectly captures that thought. Looking forward to the rest of the series!

      I appreciate that! I always wonder when I explain things if it made sense to other people or if it just made sense to me 🤣 so thank you…this is reassuring haha. When I was in college, my engineering professor would always pick at me for double majoring in math. He said if mathematicians had to approach a wall but they could only move half the distance from where they are to the wall at a time, they’d tell you they’d never get there. But eventually an engineer would say “close enough, we are here.” Haha. I feel like I lean more toward the “close enough” philosophy in most things.

    You make it look so easy. LOL Since the majority of my builds use Locking drawer slides: Vadania Heavy Duty Drawer Slide with Lock, because I build cabinets for my camping vehicle, I've struggled a bit but also used your plans for a cabinet or dresser as a starting point and that helped a lot. In the course of building drawers, I also make them various depths, some deep enough for spice jars, others shallow enough for plates, and that has added to the "fun" of making cabinets with drawers. Thanks for starting this series of "How To"s, I'm sure I am going to learn something. Until next time... Saw safe.

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  Год назад +1

      It’s easy, I promise!! Haha. Yes, you can definitely take this entire process and build it “backwards” as well by customizing the size of the drawer, then building the cabinet to fit. Making a video like this is always challenging…not because the process is difficult, just because there are a million ways to go about it and there’s not a lot of “right” or “wrong,” but there are a lot of variations project to project. I hope this is a good starting point, but definitely not a rule book haha.

What my brain can never seem to figure out is how to calculate where to mount the drawer slides by just measuring. It always takes me like 30 minutes of standing there and staring at it. First time coming across your channel and I have to say this series feels classroom complete which is a very good thing. A lot of of “build this” (not Brad he’s great) type videos tend to be like the draw bird meme.
    Step 1, draw outline. Step 2, draw the rest of the effing bird.
    Your tutorial is so thorough and packed with details I legit had to take notes on a paper and rewatch certain parts more than a few times.
    I just built my first cabinet for the garage as practice and I’d watched enough videos on how to do so. It came out alright and I will admit I kinda winged it on come parts because I’m a kinesthetic learner. I have to do things to really learn, even if it’s just to learn the mistakes and the reason not to do things.
    With that under my belt this series provided crystal clear details on everything I need to do next time. It feels like I actually showed up to class instead of reading a classmate’s notes and showing up for the test.
    Long winded way of saying, amazing work!

Plus… I found a piece that I bought super cheap and sold at my antique mall booth. But I really liked the size and so many things about it. You make tackling drawers not look so intimidating! It would be great in your next video of you could explain how to determine the slide length in a little more detail. Maybe show with a drawing or a model of the inside of a cabinet. I loved how you incorporated the SketchUp drawings into you video - especially with the moving dimensions. Very clever! Looking forward to the sequel!

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  Год назад +2

      I may put together a short form video about that! Slide length is kind of one of those things where, as long as it fits, it’s fine. It doesn’t have to be specific. In 90% of my projects, I use 16” drawer slides because I buy them in bulk and they fit most applications. Basically you just don’t want to buy a slide that’s too long for your cabinet. So your slide length should be equal to or less than the depth of your cabinet (or dresser or whatever). If you’re doing inset, the drawer front pushes the slide back from the front edge, so in those cases, the slide length plus the thickness of your drawer front should be equal to or less than your cabinet depth. So an 18” cabinet could fit an 18” slide if the drawer fronts were overlay. But it couldn’t if they were inset because the thickness of the front plus the slide length would be greater than the depth of the cabinet. If you were doing inset, you’d need to size down and they come in 2” increments, so the next smallest size would be 16”.

    Great info as always, thank you! Could you consider for future videos or bogs adding a metric conversion of your measurements for those of us outside the US? It would help to be able to know without having to stop the video all the time to go convert the measurements into metric to understand what we need to do?

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  Год назад

      I definitely understand most of the world uses the metric system. But the vast majority of my audience (including myself) is in the US and we use this other crazy system. Since I’m unfamiliar with the exact specs and standards used elsewhere, I don’t want to give incorrect information, so I stick to what I know and share from my personal experience. I know that can be frustrating. I’m sorry!
