    Hey Matt I’ve been watching your videos for quite a while now. I started fly tying probably 30 or so years ago, probably for the reason that most people do which is loosing twenty bucks worth of flys in trees. Over the years I tie the flys that I think that I will need to get me through a season then stop. Because I stop the next season I have to not only remember how to tie my favorite patterns, but also redevelop my muscle memory back into my hands. This year between you and Mad Rivers videos my fly collection is pretty respectable. It really helps that there really is nothing else worth watching on tv. I watch you videos over and over before going to my dinner table and realize that I am missing a material. Over the years I figured that I was a hack for not using the right materials, however by watching you guys I realize that I may not be that bad. I’m living up in New Hampshire for the time being and also enjoy it when you fish some of your local rivers. So there. Here is a question for you involving the Turl knot, ( I’m not the best speller). You mentioned that no one uses it any longer. I do when I can sit down and take my time tying it. It was the knot that I learned in the seventies for fly fishing. I like that knot because it seems to encourage the fly to land better, though that may be my imagination. Another thing that I learned when I started fly fishing was to make a figure 8 with my take up hand while retrieving my line. I don’t do that very often any more however sometimes I do. And one more point since St Patrick’s day was yesterday, in Les of talking politics I chose to bust my nephews balls for using a spinning rod. I don’t get it, it is so much more work. Anyway great videos.

      Well thank you for this great comment! I appreciate the kind words. And honestly, my only experience with the Turle knot is from what I've read or seen videos of. I'm glad to hear that you're getting back into tying. I'm finding it more and more relaxing as I get closer to my own retirement. I still tie lots of flies (not for videos) and I still like experimenting with new materials and pretty much anything I can come up with. Thanks again for the note!

    Hey Matt, glad you’re getting patterns from the book I recommended. Another good streamer I used some years back from that book is the “Nailer Fly” on page 95. What got me to tie it was the comment on page 96. Worked very well on brown trout from what I remember. I didn’t tie it as full as it’s pictured but the browns didn’t mind. I don’t fish a lot of streamers these days but I do still carry and use it when I do.

      You took the keyboard right out of my hands. Thinking the same and how the sparse profile will help it sink better than a wooly bugger.

    Like it. Good one Matt. Getting close to smallmouth spawning here on the Snake River. They like to protect those spawning beds so a streamer might just be the ticket. Have a great week.

      Oh yeah Mark. You might get some vicious territorial strikes during spawning season. And smallmouth bass seem to be the most vicious of all!

    I like the fly and the pattern. Just a suggestion, if you trim the hair before you tie it on, and then add just a drop of superglue after you get a few wraps down then finish the head, it keeps you from having to trim at the head and the hair will never pull out. I use the superglue trick on all hard slick hair like squirrel. Great tying!

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  8 месяцев назад

      Great tip! I've never tried that but will definitely give it a shot on my next squirrel tail streamer. Might be a good technique for regular bucktail too, but I can see it being particularly helpful for slippery hair like squirrel. Thanks for the note!

    As several folks already mentioned, that yellow squirrel tail wing looks terrific. I don’t have yellow squirrel, but it does make me wonder if I still have some yellow monga ringtail further back in storage . It would provide a similar look. Be well, boss. ;-)

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  8 месяцев назад

      Yes, I think so Bob! I've only got that one little strip of monga ringtail I picked up last year. And have probably only tied that one old historic pattern with it. I can't even remember what it was. But it is a cool strip of fur. Maybe I should break it out again. I'll be heading down to the Smokies this time next week. I'm about ready for a week off work with nothing on the agenda but waking up and fishing. :-)

      This was the Mustad 3665 Limerick bend. I think it's the one Valla used for all the flies in his "Classic Streamer Flybox." I've actually got some 10x long that I use occasionally but not a lot of patterns call for them. Still getting ready for my trip to Cherokee and the Raven Fork. It's been a few years since I've fished that area of the park. Looking forward to it!

    SSS, I like it! I've read about Church in one of the UK flyfishing and 🪰 tying mags, good stuff. Some of their contributors have RUclips channels. The S&S with the natural wing is like a Blacknose Dace with a simpler wing containing similar colors of that classic fly. 👌 Great job Matt, thanks 😊
