WOW Sir Matt, I'm speechless ... thank you 😊 that's an amazing ty, you always make it look easy and great. Thank you for the birthday wish and have a great weekend.
Thank you Sir Matt, and yes I give you all the credit for my fly tying and yes THIS IS MY #1 FAVORITE FLY TYING CHANNEL 😉🙂. My step son went on a Trout fishing trip in Colorado this morning for 4 days. He came over last night to borrow some flies with the promise of pictures. To all the followers of this GREAT AND AMAZING CHANNEL Thank you for all your comments and wishes. King Edward and Chavez Regal were so cool. Please invite someone to watch and I'm sure some will get HOOKED (lol 😆) like me. Thank You Sir Matt this has been a Great Blessing.
Ha! Edward, thanks for the note. And yes, you certainly jumped into this sport head first. And it shows with all the great flies you've been tying. Tell your stepson good luck and if he gets any nice pictures on your flies, make sure to send some to me. I'm jealous of anybody heading out to Colorado for some trout fishing! Have a great weekend my friend. :-)
Good job on that fly Matt. Happy Birthday Edward and many more. I’m happy to hear that I’m not the only one that got a late start. And that is great news to hear that your granddaughter is already tying. I LOVE TO HEAR THAT. Thank you for the note my friend. :-)
Hey Matt I really enjoyed this story about Edward and like his fly. To add a little background on myself I became interested in fly fishing when I was 9 years old. Reading the In Fisherman and a couple of other fishing magazines. I bought my first fly rod at this time. It was one of the starter kits bought from K-Mart I believe. Anyway when I was 10 I got my first fly tying set for Christmas and tied my first flies. Nothing fancy but it was fun. I caught a lot of sunfish and a few small bass. But I soon learned that fly fishing in my part of Texas was not easily done. Too much back brush and trees but I still found spots to fish from. Anyway I eventually put the fly rod up and went to more conventional fishing. Until recently that is. I have become interested in both fly fishing and tying my own flies again. I'll keep this from getting too long by just adding that in September I will turn 67. So age shouldn't have anything to do with a hobby. I enjoy your site and have learned a lot from it. I look forward to every new post from you. Keep encouraging new tiers. James in Texas.
James- this is a great note. Thanks for sharing! I’m not yet in my 60s but had a similar start. A $25 Cortland combo from K-mart in the 80s. Mostly bass and sunfish in the Georgia ponds back in those days. Good memories! I’m glad you’re getting back into tying my friend. Thanks again for the note. 👍
Happy birthday for starters. This fly reminds me of a max canyon. The color combo is different than that fly. This fly has a great color combo and Matt did a great job with this fly. Art is in the eye of the beholden
You're absolutely right Colin! I just checked that one out, and I'm going to have to put the Max Canyon on my to-do list. That's is a sweet looking pattern!
A great looking simple fly that Edward tied up. As a senior novice tier as well started 5 yrs ago ut ow more frustrated as to what to tie and what hook to use. Had a few guys from my previous worksite that were avid fly fisherman that gave me me inspiration now dont have that since retirement. I have 6wt rod line and reel used it once but I like your attitude to help me to get out and just tie something. I have given flies to alot of buddies and heard great results on them, not a cheap hobby. Always cool to watch your videos and how easy it is to follow you on your videos, thanks for the inspiration!
Wow Mitch, thank you for the kind words. And yes, my advise is always to just sit down and tie! Whatever you feel like tying, whether you fish it or not. The art of tying is relaxing and often reward enough. And if you can use or donate what you tie, then all the better! Thanks again for the note.
I'm a new subscriber and enjoying your show. Recently I got one of these smart phones (not that I know much about it)you tube talk text is it. That being said I've been trying for many years out of books. Now with the internet and being able to actually watch what a difference. Makes tying so much better. Thank you for very informative and easy to follow videos.
I have a fly that I came up with very similar to this. And the bluegill and largemouth bass in this one Creek near where I live love it. The fly has a 3X long hook a gold bead for the head. Dubbing right behind that and Chanel or Cactus for the rest of the body and then on top it has bucktail. So far they like white and peacock or green and orange Bucktail the best. Great looking fly Edward.
Thanks Mark! And another steelhead fisherman in the comments. Man, I've got to get up north and try my luck on some steelhead water. A good day for me in the tailwaters here in Maryland is a half dozen fish, with maybe one of them hitting the 12-inch mark.
Nice job showing how to tie in oval tinsel on a loop-eye hook. Now that Mustad has retired the 9575 streamer hook, one of my favorite hook designs, the main place we see loop-eyes is on salmon hooks. Edward, nice pattern! Reminiscent of the Rat series of salmon flies. I used to do a lot of them for local stores for customers headed off to the Northeast and Canada for salmon. Your fly would be a good addition to that series. I would experiment with maybe adding a brown or ginger throat or collar to your pattern, but then I never could leave a good pattern alone...
Excellent Pete; always appreciate dropping some veteran knowledge on us. I wasn't familiar with the 9575, but this hook was a Mustad SL53UBL. I think I prefer the four digit model numbers over these letter-number-letter combinations. Unless, there is some rhyme or reason for it. Maybe the UBL is "up eye" and black? Now the Daiichi salmon fly hooks (2441 is all I have) have an even longer loop for their eye. It's not tapered and extends even further down the shank. I haven't tied with them yet but they look like they would be even harder to make a smooth transition with. Re experimenting with a throat, etc... I thought about that too! But I already changed his pattern a bit by adding the peacock herl so too many more changes and it wouldn't have been an EC fly. :-)
Well welcome to the club Marty! My advice- start slow as it's easy to get hooked and in a few short years you could have a room full of feathers and furs and more flies than you'll ever be able to fish. But it's still fun. :-)
The city I live in in Florida has loads of peacocks it's fun to walk around in the field and find the feathers do I have to find flies with peacock feathers:-)
Well I'm not very good at it either Chad! But take a look at my video of the deer hair frog; I spun a lot of hair for that one. One other tier who does it pretty well on RUclips is Hughie Graves. Check out his stuff. But... I do plan to do a deer hair popper sometime soon so there will definitely be some spinning with that thing. :-)
Hey Matt nice fly. I've been wondering. Where do you get your wool yarn? I've looked all over and I'm not finding the small spool like you used in this video. Thanks
I've never heard that. Are you saying wrap the whole body in 4-5 wraps, or 4-5 thread wraps to secure it? A rule of thumb I have heard, I think I recall, is to always use an odd number of wraps. I don't know where I read that and it never made any sense to me so I've always just done what I think look best. And sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't. But I don't think the fish care. :-)
@@SavageFlies that is what I was taught by Bruce Berry a professional Fly tying person who created the Rambulance and the fish mover other flies as well less is more wire and string.
Thanks Tony; I usually get it in something like this small dispenser: flyshack.com/DisplayItem.aspx?ItemID=23425 Some places sell it by the spool of individual colors which is probably a better choice since this container has colors I've never even used. Or... you can buy whole skeins of wool yarn at Walmart or a craft store. It's not too expensive but one roll or yarn is enough for about three lifetimes of tying!
Jim- just personal preference really. With this yellow/orange color scheme, it reminds me of a lot of winter steelhead patterns. And I figure if I fish this, it would be chasing some big browns or smallmouth. Not that I've ever caught a brown big enough to straighten a regular streamer hook, but these salmon fly hooks do seem to be a bit stronger. And other than that, they just look pretty cool. :-)
Yes! It does look yellow!! I promise, holding this bucktail in my hand you can tell that it's 100% orange. But nothing I could do with the camera or lighting made it look orange in the video. And I'm looking at the thumbnail right beside the Mickey Finn, which is definitely yellow, and the wings look like the same color! Oh well, I've still got a lot to learn about my lighting. :-)
I'll have to do some research and get back to you on this one, but in the meantime, look up Dick Stewart-- he's got lots of warmwater tying books. Main focus is bass and panfish. But by bass, that usually means largemouth. As for smallmouth specific, I usually fish for them in rivers, semi-warmwater, so my theory is that trout streamers are more conducive to smallmouth than big largemouth hair bugs are. Of course, I've had a few good smallmouth days with standard trout nymphs in slightly bigger sizes. I couple years ago I got into some monster smallmouth in southwest Virginia using Prince Nymphs. Big fish on tiny bugs. Lots of fun. :-)
@@SavageFlies yes this is the areas, like French broad, the pigeon, up into Virginia. I’ve thought about poppers and multiple color combinations of just woolly boogers. Also get a lot of stripper in the Clinch on days of trout stocking, rainbow trout streamers could work. Just want to find a good book of bass patterns which leans more to mountain smallmouth

All you'd have to do in return is send us a picture of any fish you catch with them so I could highlight it in a video! You do go winter steelhead fishing up there, right? Any idea why the "winter" steelhead patterns are predominantly orange/yellow and the "summer" patterns have more red/purple? Man, I need to go steelhead fishing. :-)
That My Friend ..... is a DEAL !!! 😊🌞🎣💫 The color selection, as far as I am concerned ... Is “ Forage - Based ! “ The Steelhead have been foraging heavily on Salmon eggs , after the Fall Salmon Run. The Steelies move into the Rivers from the Great Lakes ..... they are Hungry And POWERFUL !!!!! What a Hoot ✨🎣👍🏻 In the summer, the shift in forage moves to insects, larva, flies, and available minnows/fry. Thus the color predominance ....... as far as I can determine . This is anecdotal, and Not from Davie McPHAIL 😉🙃! How can I safely give you my mailing address Matt ? This past Winter was BRUTAL for Steelhead ..... The weather did NOT cooperate in the least. Hoping for a better year in 2021 ....... I will let you know if it ever goes Ballistic ! You could fly-in and stay with myself and my bride. Let me know and I look forward to seeking the Steelies with Your patterns !!!!

great job Edward happy birthday and keep tying.
Happy birthday for starters. This fly reminds me of a max canyon. The color combo is different than that fly. This fly has a great color combo and Matt did a great job with this fly. Art is in the eye of the beholden
Yes Sir thanks
Thanks again for the note.
happy late b-day edward ... awesome flie ...thanks matt for all you do ...see ya joe
Happy birthday Edward! Great fly. Love the colors!
Appreciate it Jon! Have a great weekend my friend. :-)
Happy Birthday Edward and nice fly I might add!!!!
Appreciate it Samuel; thanks for the note!
Nice! Happy Belated Birthday Edward.
Happy birthday Edward!! Nice pattern. Call it the”King Edward”.
Funny you said that Mike, I just recommended that in another comment. His next fly will have to be called the King Edward. :-)
And have a happy birthday
The peacock here looks wonderful, especially as a longer thorax. I say we call this fly 'The Edward'. :-)
Or we give it a purple body and call it the King Edward. :-)
@@SavageFliesVery good! :-)
Love the pattern, great job Edward. I will definitely tie some.
Appreciate it William! Make sure you let us know if you ever catch anything with it. :-)
Cool looking fly Ed and Happy Birthday
Looks like a fish catcher
Thanks for the video Matt
You bet Dave; always appreciate it my friend. :-)
Well thank you Edward! I appreciate you sharing this cool story my friend. :-)
Happy Birthday Edward nice looking fly I like it would use it for steelhead in a heart beat
Thanks Mark! And another steelhead fisherman in the comments. Man, I've got to get up north and try my luck on some steelhead water. A good day for me in the tailwaters here in Maryland is a half dozen fish, with maybe one of them hitting the 12-inch mark.
p.s. EC Torch is a perfect name.
👍
Just got my first kit at 52. Pancreatic cancer slowing down my fishing I will now tie flies while stuck in house.
Sorry to hear that Jim but I'm glad to have you here! Let me know if you ever have any requests.
I like it! Probably great for this time of year. Nice pattern.
Thanks Frank! And by the way, I just dropped your vise off at the post office this afternoon. I’ll email you the tracking info later tonight.
@@SavageFlies thank you
Nice job showing how to tie in oval tinsel on a loop-eye hook.
Oh, and happy birthday! I am the same age. How did we ever make it this far, and how did we get here?? I have NO idea.
Cool fly happy b day edward
Sweet fly!! Happy late birthday!!!
Thanks Bob!
Nice fly Ed and Birthday Wishes
Appreciate it Jim; have a great weekend my friend!
Great fly Edward. Hope you are still tying.
He sure is John! He's here in the comments pretty much every video. Hope you're doing well my friend!
Happy birthday Edward I Am brand new to this I've been buying stuff and I have not even tied my first fly
@@SavageFlies amen to that
Very nice pattern!
Thanks man; appreciate you watching!
I recommend the wapsi fly tying kit that's what started it all for me
Awesome fly
Great job Edward. Matt think you can do a video on spinning deer hair? I stink at it. Just can’t seem to get it. Thanks Edward looks great.
nice tie, i like your videos, new b also, a subscrider. you are a good teacher
Thank you Robert! I appreciate the kind words. :-)
Yes he is that's why I call him Maestro(teacher)
Mice Matt and Happy Birthday ED
Thanks Mark! Appreciate it my friend. :-)
Hey Matt nice fly. I've been wondering. Where do you get your wool yarn? I've looked all over and I'm not finding the small spool like you used in this video. Thanks
Thanks MATT 😃🇺🇸🎉
✨🙏🏻🎣💫
Cool…looks very much like old school salmon flies!
Cool fly … I have a question I was taught that with ribbing to be out in 4 to 5 wrapping for tying. What is your thoughts on that as a rule of thumb?
I've never heard that. Are you saying wrap the whole body in 4-5 wraps, or 4-5 thread wraps to secure it? A rule of thumb I have heard, I think I recall, is to always use an odd number of wraps. I don't know where I read that and it never made any sense to me so I've always just done what I think look best. And sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't. But I don't think the fish care. :-)
@@SavageFlies that is what I was taught by Bruce Berry a professional Fly tying person who created the Rambulance and the fish mover other flies as well less is more wire and string.
Where do you get your wool yarn this looks like something in need to try
Thanks Tony; I usually get it in something like this small dispenser: flyshack.com/DisplayItem.aspx?ItemID=23425
Some places sell it by the spool of individual colors which is probably a better choice since this container has colors I've never even used. Or... you can buy whole skeins of wool yarn at Walmart or a craft store. It's not too expensive but one roll or yarn is enough for about three lifetimes of tying!
Oh Matt, why would you chose a salmon hook?
Jim- just personal preference really. With this yellow/orange color scheme, it reminds me of a lot of winter steelhead patterns. And I figure if I fish this, it would be chasing some big browns or smallmouth. Not that I've ever caught a brown big enough to straighten a regular streamer hook, but these salmon fly hooks do seem to be a bit stronger. And other than that, they just look pretty cool. :-)
@@SavageFlies ok, I was just wondering if it made some difference 👍
Don't no if is your background but wing and body looks yellow lol
What’s a good pattern book for smallmouth in the Appalachian area?
Mice fly gonna try it
Nice TORCH Ed 🎉🇺🇸☀️ ....... I’ll run this pattern of Your’s on Michigan and someday Ontario Canada 🇨🇦 Smallies !!!
I’d be happy to try one out if you’d like to mail one to me !!!! 😃 TIGHTLINES ED & Happy Day of Your Birth 🎉🎉🎉
Brian- how about I send you a dozen or so of my extra steelhead flies for you to try out up in Michigan? All you'd have to do in return is send us a picture of any fish you catch with them so I could highlight it in a video! You do go winter steelhead fishing up there, right? Any idea why the "winter" steelhead patterns are predominantly orange/yellow and the "summer" patterns have more red/purple? Man, I need to go steelhead fishing. :-)
That My Friend ..... is a DEAL !!! 😊🌞🎣💫
The color selection, as far as I am concerned ...
Is “ Forage - Based ! “ The Steelhead have been foraging heavily on Salmon eggs , after the Fall Salmon Run. The Steelies move into the Rivers from the Great Lakes ..... they are Hungry And POWERFUL !!!!! What a Hoot ✨🎣👍🏻
In the summer, the shift in forage moves to insects, larva, flies, and available minnows/fry.
You should tie a bann special or migintys shrimp please
I've seen the regular McGinty (bumble bee looking thing with a mallard wing), but have never heard of the shrimp. Now I'm looking at the Bann Special. That is a good looking fly! I'm adding it to the to-do list. :-)
@@SavageFlies migintys shrimp is just another man trying to recreate the wheel by putting and orange hackle in front of the badger hackle of the bann special
Reminds me of the rat series of salmon flys.
Yes, good eye Walter! And the Max Canyon as well.
Are there any trout whatsoever in Texas? I think of Texas as being a huge arid desert...
Same here Andy, but I hear they have some in their hill country. And the Guadalupe River is supposed to have a breeding year-round population of rainbows. But still, if I was heading out west from the east coast, I would keep going a little farther west. :-)
