  • This is our first time listening to Black Sabbath. We started with War Pigs because it was recommened in our Discord server. This is an interesting topic that, unfortunately, is still relevant 50 years after this song was released. When will the war mongering politicians be held accountable?

Although the Vietnam conflict was in full swing when this was released, Black Sabbath were a British band and Britain wasn't heavily involved in Vietnam. I feel that this song was written with Vietnam in mind but is an indictment of all war in general, and those who propagate it.

They worked hard in low paying jobs, while the city rebuilt itself in ways that further separated the well off from the poor, reinforcing the idea that the ruling class will always shield themselves from war in its present, and then benefit from the effects of the war, no matter which way they turn.

There are not many bands brave enough to keep doing it today but there are a few. When I watched the two of you reading these lyrics and discussing them, it made me very emotional. That above and below plus distirtion played loud. Black Sabbath originally formed in 66 -68 Called Earth. Later became Black Sabbath. They did not invent the genre or certainly not solo. But ask Mettalica and its the british metal that inspired then. Sabbath despite their sound and look are your basic liberal/hippie/peacenik type. I am sure there is not a drug out there they weren't using at some point. Similar messages can be found with Megadeth. They read the classics. Including the books by the enlightnment philosphers who inspired the US founding father's like Jeffersin, Madison, Franklin. The thread still there. Individual rights, individual responsibility, peaceful coexistence. Against Collectivism. Anti establishment. Free thinkers.

I am a Vietnam Era USAF vet. The war officially ended in May, 1975, though thousands of troops were still over there. It was a different time. While most soldiers are welcomed home today, many of us were spat upon and called "baby killers" when we came home. You mention the word "conflict" in your conversation. It is a disingenuous term created by politicians to be able to say that we were not in a WAR, just a conflict. Unfortunately, this "conflict" lasted a decade and a half and over 58,000 Americans died. The reason America entered the war was to "prevent the spread of Communism." The cold war between the USA and Russia was still going on and the Govt., I believe, wanted to be in Russia's back yard, so to speak. I am a Vet who hates war, which is something some current vets can't understand; they think I'm against America, which is not the case. My question is, how can you NOT hate war. A great song about the war is "Still in Saigon" by the Charlie Daniels Band. Here's a link: ruclips.net/video/PCJ_ywoqdbs/видео.html
Another great one is "Fortunate Son" by CCR. Keep up the great reactions guys!

War is a racket. To make politicians and corporatations and the elite richer every single war the U.S has inserted itself in or started was on false pretences to bring Democracy. A big fat lie. Its simply to steal resources and starve or murder poor brown people. I just hope the military wakes up and coups the crooked govt that is no longer of the people but of bloodlines. No longer for the people but for the elite. And is there to serve themselves and lie to us.

Ozzy is probably my favorite singer too, Black Sabbath really was a gift... such deep music that is relatable without being pretentious. The solos always top notch and then the drums and bass too... those drum rolls, people dont realize that this was unconventional back then... now days its commonplace. They really did shape metal.

At 17, he had a job working with sheet metal and had an accident that cost him the tips of two fingers on his right hand (he's left handed, so this would be his fretting hand). He was told he'd never play guitar again. He created some prosthetic fingertips for himself and the rest is history.

For a guy that lost the end of two fingers, two needed for the fretboard, in a punch press accident Tony Iommi was a masterful guitarist, add Geezer on bass, Bill Ward on drums and Ozzy's vocals and Sabbath was incredible. My favorite Sabbath song might be N.I.B. ... and I always get a laugh at the opening to "Sweet Leaf" when you hear a cough repeated. Before recording the song the band got high and the tape was rolling and caught Tony Iommi coughing, and they thought it was the perfect way to start "Sweet Leaf.".
