Cheap Sailboat Has So Many Problems - Ep 285 - Lady K Sailing
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 17 окт 2024
- I bought a cheap sailboat and it's bad! It's a Hobie 16 Catamaran sailing dinghy and while it was only a $500 sailboat with a trailer, it's going to take some effort to make the repairs. This series will be all about sailboat repairs, making a sailboat seaworthy, and leaning to repair a sailboat. Hope you enjoy ;)

Tim, know you're busy with P S, but please don't put Lady K to rest, or spread so thin you burn out.
Your insight keeps we coming back.
Fair winds and red sails.
Bruh this is going to be an awesome series!! I can't wait! My wife and I are currently pouring money into a 1974 o'day 22. including buying a ski boat, giving away the boat, welding on roller bunks to clear the keel, new rigging, rebedding everything, etc.
That is awesome!
I've had my Hobie 16 for over 30 years, still a blast , still in great shape, happy to see a video from Lady K . as for memories ... use to sleep out on it with my darling on warm nights.
I can't wait to see the Rehaul on the Hobiecat I'm new to this scene and I've never sailed but feeling very inspired just by the trailer rehaul.
So cool. Love it . Even folks who never got their hands greasy can replace tires, leaf springs, lights. Especially with RUclips videos. And a boat and trailer can be found cheaper than trailers alone sometimes. So well worth the time investment.
I just started watching this video, but I can donate a GoPro to the cause. Having a power boat mess with the sailboats sounds like a normal day sailing for me. There's 20 power boats for every sailboat on the lake that I sailed on.
For Lady K's next adventure, how about a sail around PEI? That's not sooo far away, and I've always wanted to see the PEI coastline from the sea. Plus it's supposed to have cool places to visit ashore, although I've never been there.
Very cool idea!
I just bought a 1964 Contest 25-1 for $20. I drove to the DC area to get her with my trailer from my Catalina 22. I did put fresh tires on her and made longer bunk post for it.
I didn't realize how much more the Contest weighed. I was towing it being my 35 ft school bus. I kept my speed at 45 mph or less and stopped every 30 minutes to give the tires a break. I crossed the Eastern Continental Divide and went through Gatlinburg as well.
I managed to transport the boat from Washington DC to North Alabama safely.
Much of the interior is good and because it has no balsa core, the boat is incredibly solid.
The restoration is underway and I can't wait for our future adventures.
This was unusual for video Tim. It was necessary for those who buy a used trailer sailboat. Good tips. Thank you Tim Happy Sailing ⛵
Thanks for watching!
I just bought my very first boat of any kind and she’s a hobie cat. It’s cool that I get to watch this while I’m fixing her up to sail in Tampa bay, Florida.
I've watched a bunch of your videos and enjoy them. You are a hard working talanted guy and I learn a bunch from you. I owned a 26 ft Mcgregor sail boat in 1999 and have been thinking about getting a catalina 34. thanks you are a great inspiration and source of knowledge about sailing. fair winds and following seas!
I appreciate that! Thanks for watching!
Hey , I grew up in Newport , so I know what HOBIE means , FUN ! ! When I saw the catamaran , it brought back my summers of fun ! ! Take good care of her and she will take care of you . HOBIE CAT 16's are AWESOME boats , I bet $ 5.00 on the Hobie in the race . 😂
Ha! I just found my parents 1974 H16, and bought it back into the family. I think I’m in the same boat and it’s going to need some repairs. Following your journey on this!
A friend and I picked up a Hobie 16 recently in Northern Indiana. Looking forward to watching this series.
Being from the UK and living just down the road the big man himself JC, this idea ticks all the boxes I'd say!! Let's make it happen
I very strongly recommend replacing the shrouds. They don’t last forever, and I found out the hard way when I popped a 10+ year old shroud in the surf.
Been hangin’ with ya for a couple years here Tim. Always enjoy your top shelf content and insightful commentary. Back in the ‘70’s we used to take my uncle’s Hobie 16 sailing out of Tiburon on SF Bay.
Sounds like a fun idea, but I'd suggest super soakers instead of water balloons... No need to throw balloons into the water.
They make ones appropriate for the task. Degradable. We use them in poker runs all the time. No mess.
@@LadyKSailing You know how the internet is... You'll get flamed in the chat if people see you throwing even "biodegradable" balloons in the water... UNLESS you run an experiment first... Have a waterballoon fight with your daughter in your yard. Round up the scraps, and put them in a pile in a corner of your yard. Film how long it takes them to decompose. Post a disclaimer and a small clip at the end of the waterballoons in the water video with how quickly they decompose in your yard... Just a thought. 🤷🏻♂️. They MIGHT be "decomposable" just the same as flushable wipes are "flushable." 🤔
The quick research I found is there really isn't a balloon that breaks down. It can take months or longer. Supersoakers are a better idea.
@@stephenbmorton "degradable" over the short time of 100k years! Technically, the truth!
Someone has to bring a jet boat with a diverter.
Tims wayback machine from then to now he'll show us how ~~ Thx Mr. T
Hi Tim! Been watching for a few years now! Your videos helped me enormously with figuring out must haves and must have nots in buying my first big boat! Landed on a late 70’s Bruce Roberts 35 center cockpit and I love my boat! I also have a hobie 16 and can’t wait to see you trapezing on that thing!! Let’s goooo
Isn't a Bruce Roberts a steel boat?
I think you are pulling the wool over our eyes.. My wife and I spent the evening on our new to us Cabo Rico 45 at a Marina in Boca Grande, FL. Parked up close and personal with the restaurant was a multi million dollar power yacht with a Neon name plate on the stern.... Lady K
Keep up the good work. Oh, yea, they passed us the next day after we left many hours before they did like we were setting still!
🤣
Tim , go big but not too big, I will always support your channels for you know what it's all about ( the love for sailing) I will give anything to go sailing one day with you for you have the knowledge and passion so I will feel safe.
From South Africa
😂 I did the same last year, I got a Mystere 6.0xl almost for free, very good sail with new mast, but the hulls needed some repair.
After the famous last word of the owner “the trailer is ready to hit the road” I pinned on my truck and 2 km from the pickup point I lost one trailer wheel, was late at night.
I dragged without one wheel to a Canadian Tire parking lot 6 km away, sparks everywhere, slept the night in the parking lot, following morning bought two new wheels and bearings, one jack, luckily I had my tools with me, and fixed 😂.
After some tlc now I enjoy it!
I use to race on Dart 18 but this cat flies fast like a Tornado.
That race sounds awesome and as I live vicariously on RUclips boating videos I would definitely watch!
Personally, I think THIS video is the best one I have seen in quite some time . I learned a ton about the trailer, what to look for, and how to modify it. More please!
Thanks for watching!
One of the most fun boats I've ever sailed is the Hobie 16. Rig it with a double trapeze system, get a crew, and go out in a blow and haul azz. Wet, wild and so much fun.
I love the boat repair videos more than sailing videos to be honest. Haven't seen any work like this on your channel yet. Excited to see it.
You can get really cheap baefang radios and just set everyone up on the same channel to allow for some banter back and forth. You would have to manually record the conversation still but its doable.
Hey, I literally just bought one of these old hobie 16’s as my first sailboat, inspired by your channel. if you are in Chatham area I am 2 hours from you. I have an suv with a hitch and could certainly help out the channel! Cheers
Sweet!!! Add me on fb??
Just got a 1985 Hobie 16! So I'll be tuning in!
Do it! Unfortunately we are too far away, but sounds like a great idea
Tim - this is ‘getting back to sailing roots’ stuff - love it!
As you repair stuff….. why not mention approx costs of repairs along the way, as well as ‘must have’ tools and ‘nice to have’ ones too
Great suggestion!
great idea! I wanna see you race 3 boats (at least one cat ,preferably all 3) - up wind, into the wave.
Looks like a fun series! Messin' around and fixing up an old boat. And the high production race sounds fun. No helicopter involved?
91.2k subs by the time this video published :) I am looking forward to seeing this catamaran repair series.
Thanks for watching!
Love this. I taught myself to sail with a 800$ Hobie 16 on the gusty glacier lakes of Minnesota and South Dakota. The trailer was homemade from a model A axel that was probably worth more than the boat. It came with I think with the original 1978 rainbow blue sail that I plunged thru on a capsize. A filp will happen if you are doing it right. I replaced it with the holy grail tequila sunrise sails which I still have and would be for sale!
Congratulations to your success doing what you love. It’s been a great ride these past couple years following and I look forward to seeing where lady K is headed next! Cheers 🍻
Thanks for watching!😎
Ha! I also picked up a Hobie 16 last year for $500. with a trailer. Took her for her maiden voyage last Sunday. Slight breeze, great fun!
Love the way you think Tim, that race sounds like a blast 😂❤👏, cheers from down the road in London 😎
Tim-
Great milestone. Keep the videos coming.
I like the concept of boat repair and maintenance especially with smaller boats. Not too many of us have 35+ ft boats.
Thanks 👍
Tim, great to see you getting back to boats under 5k. Most folks just starting out don't have 40k to invest.
I like the idea. I’d be totally in if I wasn’t 2k miles away. 😕
By the way, you probably know already but grounds are the number one problem with trailer lights. I always rewire mine with all dedicated grounds that connect directly to the wiring harness. I highly recommend doing it this way next time, It’ll save you a ton of headache over time.
Thank you! For having your channel, I've learned a lot from you these last few years! Keep safe!
Thanks, will do!
Enjoying the channel and subscribed after watching a few episodes.
Thanks for watching!
I have a replacement mast and pretty much every single part you could need for these boats. I'm located in Mid-Michigan but ship the small to medium stuff to Canada all the time
You need to title the sailboat race…the sailboat wars! 🤣🤣🤣
Love the race video idea. Keep us posted on the plans and especially when. I doubt it would work out but if I am free whenever you decide to pull this off, I'd be up for the adventure.
Decent buy for $500. The ride home was a bit hairy. It's a great project boat to share with viewers. A Hobie 16 is a fun, fast boat. A fine example of how to get out on the water for relatively cheap. Wish I had more time in Ontario to be part of the sailing adventure.
Have fun!
Chris
Thanks for watching!
Great idea Tim! Let us know how much you end up spending to restore the Hobie (and the trailer). Did you have to make any fixes on the other two (laser and sunfish, I think)?
Love, love, love the series. IDK about the race idea, but hey, I will learn something for sure. You have all the toys!
Thanks for watching!
Wow. Thank you. I am so glad my feed found your channel! Thank you!
You are so welcome!
Can't wait to see the rest of this series!
Also, love watching the cloud development in the background of the time-lapse sequences.
Ok. That sounds like an amazing idea. However, I would recommend each boat to get a 360 camera on the boat, and a GoPro on like a bump helmet on the contestant.
That way, you could pull “drive by” shots of the power boats in post production using the 360, and get a point of view from the contestants.
Another option would be a bunch of those insta 360 Go’s. People have zip tied them to birds and gotten good video. They would be small enough to go just about anywhere.
I only recently found your channel. Loving everything so far.
Here with you since the pandemic and cant wait to watch along for the next journey!
Thanks so much for coming along for the journey! 😎
great ideas Tim!
Glad you like them!
I'm looking forward to more of these little DIY videos!
More to come!
Want to pass along one step up on the parts bins for the garage. First you are right that labeling helps a great deal but "out of sight is out of mind," so use all clear bottom crates wherever possible and you will become much more efficient. Mostly, I can tell you that at least a hundred times over the last 30 years I have gone out to buy a new part that I found later because it was in an opaque crate or cardboard box and I could not see where it was. Also, instead of leaving the crates on a shelf, I stack them on a roller dolly built to nest the crate stack - aka go mobile and keep your space.
I remember racing my 12 ft. Wesort and Laser while learning to sail. It's also when I learned to dislike power boats. Especially the skiers behind them. They would fly by and spray the sails with a wall of water. When in the Wesort I began carrying a paddle to slide across the waters surface as the skier came by. Didn't take long before skiers recognized my boat and stopped spraying.
Think about adding a solo skier behind the power boat.
Love all the ideas - can’t wait to watch em!
Love this series and small boats are fun
Tim: can you do a video on the effect of purchasing a charter boat that sustained damages and repaired, and the effect the repair has on the resale value of the boat years later.
Good job I have been watching your channel and have decided to get a boat for the first time ever. I want to eventually get to a point I can do the Great American Loop. I live 3 miles from the Mississippi River in the Alton IL area but never had a boat now in my early 60s and retiring soon I want one. Thank you for the inspiration.
You can do it!
Been subscribed for quite awhile now. That'll be a very fun boat and I would love to volunteer but I'm down here in Texas right where Beryl tore us up quite a bit. I'm sure you'll get plenty of volunteers locally and I'll be watching to see how it goes.
Nice to see you working and buying cheap rigs - I had you figured for a high end yaught guy!
🤣
Your idea sounds great! Wish I was closer. Not sure about trailering for a couple hundred miles.
If I was younger man I would have upt sticks from the UK and moved to the USA to help you, awesome concept top gear on boats,
Congratulations on your milestone. Love your channel
Thanks for watching!
I've had 3 or 4 hobi 16's, I've been want to get another one. Love your channel.
Thanks for watching!
Hell yeah! that video sounds awesome!! I'd volunteer to be in it, but I've booked out all my allotted PTO already.
Sounds like a drone would be a good option for your race, a drone operator on a follow boat would get better shots than a camera boat. Might be worth reaching out to drone youtubers based in your area once you have more details and a timeline hammered out
Spooky.
I just bought my third Hobie 16, this one is 1987, the other two I sailed till they fell apart, soaked hulls etc. So can't wait to see what pans out here with the refurb 🙂
Cheers from Edmonton.
Like the idea of the races. I learned how to sail on my dad's CL 16 and my brother bought a CL 14 which we would take racing. I owned and raced a Catalina 27 for many years on lake St. Clair. If you need help let me know.
Looking forward to the series and the race
Serves you right for going to the dark side with a cat!⚓
But $500, that's a cheap boat Tim, as long as she [mostly] sails.
_Sounds like a fun project._
Your welcome, glad to be a part of your story.
Cool video. Thanks for series
Thanks for watching!
Hey Tim let me know if you need help, I have a GoPro, drone, truck, boat licence and no boat this season so haven’t been on the water at all. I’m in Niagara so could make it work.
When you changed the wheels I would have applied Rustolium paint to the metal frame plus add a couple of aftermarket rollers and jack wheel to move the trailer around by hand
Cool. I’m in Puerto Rico so, too far but, sounds fun!!
Congrats on the channel! Well deserved!🎉
Thanks so much for watching!
Awesome! I love my hobie 16
That race sounds like fun. I'm on the Michigan side of Lake St Clair, I may be interested in sailing and towing one boat with my car.
I wish I lived near you. I’d be so down for this!!
If the trailer wiring is CCA (copper coated aluminum), you will be redoing it next year. The aluminum degrades/oxidizes to dust in a moisture environment. Got to go with copper and avoid the cheap imports if you are looking for longevity.
Dude sailing race/video would be awesome. I have a lifetime of boating experience and a touch of sailing experience. If it were on a weekend I may be able to partake. I live on Long Island NY. I forgot exactly where you live but Toronto is a 10 hour drive, no biggie. And I have a newer waterproof GoPro.
Just on my way to go look at a siren17 you definitely are an inspiration
great idea!! I'd watch that race all day... Ive sailed a hobie 16 and a lazer and loved both. Hobie should be quicker but maybe more skill needed to sail it,... just my thoughts...
further more if I lived in the states near you... Id love to be in the video. Love UK top gear with the hammond and oriinal trio! bit im in New zealand.. lol the otherside of the planet!
I just did the lights on my boat trailer. I bought the magnetic ones so you can pull them off before you stick it in the water. Waterproof submersible don't know but I just yank them off and stick the boat in. So far so good
Excellent solution. After installing many sets of lights on various ''bargains'' boats over the years, - never last more than a season or two, this is a great fix - magnetic mounted set. Take these off or install at your leisure.
Man. I came here in two hours and am still the 399th like. I guess to be in the first 300 now one needs to get here in the first hour. Those 100K subs are adding up! 🙂
Love this video! I'm looking into a hobbies cat 16 also! My dad had one when we were kids and I learned to sail on one. Now I have two young boys and would to let them experience the same thing. How available are parts for a hobie cat 16? And what kind of cost are we looking at for typical restoration.
Awesome I like the new series idea cheers
Drones. Get some drones filming nuts to join the fun, film them boats upclose at water level flight individually during their action, especially turning or changing direction looks specatcular, also some high altitude footage now and than.
I bet you can find quite a few enthusiasts to join the fun.
Replace those skids on the trailer with some rollers! I’ve owned multiple Hobie 16’s, enjoy!
Great video! I recently bought a Kells 23 trailer sailer, with trailer, and had the joy of needing to repair the trailer. This included welding new 2x4 steel sections to the rotted frame, replacing cracked leaf springs and replacing all 4 wheels (rims were rotted through), replacing the fenders and lights. Had the same issue with the stupid white wire :p. HOWEVER, after all that work, the one thing that caused me no end of grief was the process to get it registered in NB. At some point in the chain of ownership, the paperwork was not maintained, and so there was no paper trail for the boat or trailer, nor was there a VIN on the trailer. Here in NB, the only way around this is to declare it a homemade trailer and get an MVI done. The trailer has now been with an inspector for 2 months while I wait with baited breath to see if it passes after all the effort I put into it. Meanwhile, I do have the boat in the water which I managed on the way to the inspection. The lesson here is: know the rules and process in your area, and if you live somewhere like NB, having the paperwork is easily worth an extra $1000 - $2000 on the sticker price as it avoids the mandatory (buddy holding you and your trailer over a barrel) inspection.
You are so right, getting a registration for your boat trailer in NB is a pain ! Make sure you know what is expected before you buy the trailer/boat.
.... that sounds super fun and I think you need either paper water balloons, or a super soaker with chalkwater. :D
Also I would totally volunteer if you were nearby. :D
We use biodegradable balloons 🎈
Wow I just bought a Hobie 14 Turbo. I went to New York with a U-Haul to get the boat, no trailer. Last friday I drove 240 miles to get a trailer in Indiana. No title for the boat, a 14 foot sailboat in New York doesn't need a title. I've still got to figure that out. Now that I am retired I'm getting back into sailing, I had a Hobie 18 in the 80's. I'll be right here watching how you are getting your 16 ready to sail again. My next step is the title and then rigging. I like seeing you pull it around with the tractor. I live 200 yards from the lake in my community, I'll be pulling mine to the beach with my Cub Cadet. I might even be able to leave the mast up if I can make it by one tree.
Nice!
Just picked up an old hobie 16 myself, hope you spend some time on the refit. Mine needs a new tramp and running rigging. Standing rigging and sails are excellent. What are you going to buff out the fiberglass with?
Actually likely repair it all and paint it
bro so much fun totally awesome cant wait to watch :)
Hope you enjoyed it!
That sounds fun.
I've watched many of your videos and I don't have you as subscribed until today
Thanks!😊
