Our Journey! How did we get here?
In the winter of 2019 we moved in to our self built van full time to begin living, working and travelling Canada. We quickly fell in love with chasing our dreams of adventuring off the beaten path, living off grid and being self sustaining. We drove our van thousands of miles through various countries-Canada, USA, Mexico & Guatemala. All of which we documented here on our channel, be sure to check that out! After many years on the open road we found ourselves 15 acres of remote woods on the East Coast of Canada where we are building a homestead and renovating our fully off the grid cabin. We are diving into this chapter of our lives in no experience, we're so happy we can bring you all along as we learn to do it all with our own two hands. Thank you for being here with us for cabin life, van life and all the in between!

Once again the two of you have shared your real, down to earth challenges with us. Sometimes people fail at off grid living because they try to go too fast into the process. They didn’t study the property thoroughly enough. They didn’t consider the “ worst case scenarios “ realistically. Your input has added volumes to the reference library of what being off grid is really like. You chose a rather harsh climate to commit to for starters, but you knew that going in and accepted the requirements. I could say so much more about how much I admire your dedication and brilliance. Bottom line may be that you have made others see the value of perseverance when the whole project looks like it’s going straight down the dumper. Kudos to you lovely ladies!

You definitely nailed my biggest fear in this one. I bought land at the start of 2020 right before the world shut down. No one was in business anymore so it was me and youtube university. The ticks. Let's talk about the ticks. I had to drive an hour and a half to my son's house to have him take 4 out of my back after clearing trees all week for my 1000 foot long road. It shook me. I don't like playing host to things that can give me a life changing disease. I went to youtube Uni again to learn everything I could about ticks and how to keep them off of me. I got one, thankfully on my calf a month later. But what you said about WHERE they could potentially be is, and will always be, my greatest fear of living out in the wilderness. I can't drive to my son's for that one if it ever happens.

The thing I enjoy about VanWives is that you haven't lost your desire, your thirst for travel and adventure while establishing your homestead. So many other adventure travel channels I used to follow made the transition from vanlife to a permanent home and gave up the travel/adventure part of their lives. That's great for them, I'm glad they are happy but it's not why I tuned in. I've no desire to watch people have children and live in a house, I can see that by turning around from my computer screen, after all I live that life and its wonderful. Your homestead is so far off grid and you spend lots of time outdoors combined with your desire for travel that it keeps me coming back. Hopefully you can get away this winter to somewhere interesting for a week or two if nothing else and keep those adventure fires burning!

My husband and I have always loved renovating our own homes. Our 80% off grid 118 year old farm house has been our last project. We reside deep in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina, so We can totally relate to your victories and struggles as you make the land your own even if it’s only one square foot at a time. I only spent 6 months (solo at 62) off grid in a French forest thinking it's where I'd want to retire. No electricity, barely any internet, huge black spiders on the walls and worm snakes that would hunker under the egg cartons (I literally pulled them out by the tail and put them outside), hawks and owls that might snatch my little dogs (had to keep them on a leash to let them out at night), foxes and deer. Freshly washed laundry would sour on the line or fly off into a field on a stormy day because even in the middle of summer it was always damp and cold. Still, it was probably one of the best memories I ever made and wouldn't change it for the world. There are house sitters who would gladly accommodate you while you're off on one of your worldly adventures in exchange for the privilege of living off grid for a period of time. Enjoy the fruits of you labor ladies while you're still so young to do so.🕊️

I am a long seasoned off grid homesteader with lots of experience and many bad mistakes.
You need to up your garbage game for a variety of safety reasons for you, the dogs, and the property.
All bagged garbage should only go in heavy duty garbage pails with locking lids.
Placed inside of the wooden storage bin.
And the bin also needs to be securely bar latched.

One of your best videos... We live off-grid but not quite as isolated as you. Your list was comprehensive and helpful for those who are considering it. People don't understand what it means that we can't just easily get away, get groceries, or that part of our heating system in the winter is wearing several layers of clothes IN the house. We love living in nature, but it is isolating and crazy, with some wildlife occasionally living in the house with us. And, especially in the winter, we miss out on some of the amenities that others have without thinking about it (i.e., we have several backups for internet, heat, electricity, and have to time of showers to not freeze, etc.). Storms and fires can also be intense here, so we have escape plans mapped out. The quiet and peace are awesome. But we miss easy access to family and friends, nice restaurants, and easy, or sometimes any, delivery of essentials. We are lucky to have a community that supports each other in times of need. And then we get things like yesterday when wild turkeys came to my back door to check out what I was doing. Regularly seeing bobcats, mountain lions, bears, elk, deer, coyotes, and other animals is SO COOL! Tradeoffs are intense but wonderful. Not sure if we will be doing this in our 80s but for now, it is quite awesome!!!!

I lived in the country most of my younger years and rodents were common as well as bugs. Living as remote as you two makes it even more so. You two are not only an inspiration to a lot of people, your two of the bravest city people I have ever known. Living off grid as beyond most people's comprehension. Most younger people have never seen an outhouse. They may have seen a porta-potty. We had a two-seater outhouse in the first country home I lived in. We never had to use it, THANK GOD! I was the scariest thing to a 12-year-old. I think the reason it was a two-seater was that it was scary, bring a friend. This is a spectacular video. Great summary of all the challenges you have faced and come to terms with. Any one of the eight categories might become a deal breaker for living off-grid. I think one of the hardest is that you are tied to your homestead to the point that it is difficult to get away. The other is that no matter how much you love and commit to another, you must be able to have alone time to recharge. Being able to accept that and manage it is very important when you are so isolated.

You guys are SO freaking resilient! So much so that now you actually like how black fly bites feel - now that’s resilience!
I had a temporary mice problem once and got rid of them by lining my place with dried bay leaves. Worked like a charm. Maybe that would help in your problem areas. And for insects, there’s a bunch of essential oils that you can turn into sprays to repel bugs of all kinds (ingredients/instruction are plentiful online). Probably silly advice considering you’re smack dab in the middle of a forest, but you never know.
Good luck with the 🚽 (yup, they even have a toilet emoji).

You two have come a long way. I credit that to your tenacity, ingenuity and smarts.
You are a great team and that’s icing on the cake.
At some point, perhaps you could talk about the mental and physical health aspects of this journey. We’ve seen a lot of that on camera. I know it’s hard to talk about but it’s something you two have worked so very hard to handle.

Super helpful reality digest for all those off grid dreamers. Even when you're on the hydro grid with well and septic like I am, there are still the other aspects of bush living that require attention. I really appreciate your exposing the complexity of the incinerator toilet. I had no idea it was a serious little propane furnace. I just got the diverter and fan to DIY a Throne brand composting toilet for my bunkie. It has electricity and I don’t mind maintaining a humanure compost system.

Pro tip on composting your kitchen waste. Chop up your waste. This fast tracks breaking down your compostable waste. Intermittently add in a compost smoothie consistency and pour it all around the inside of the bin. Also you will want to add a compost starter in the beginning and intermittently layering in previously composted material. Until you get your compost going use compost you can buy from your local store garden center. These products have all of the active microbes needed to breakdown your waste into that black gold. You can also add in that really rotten, (so rotten that it falls apart in your hands) wood for the same microbes. Just break it up into smallest pieces that you can.
Now is a great time to add in some of those fallen tree leaves. Just crush them up as small as you can. Just a couple of inches is all you need and turn in. Find a location away from the house and make a big pile of leaves. In the spring dig down to the bottom and you have some great material to add into raised beds just above all of the rotten wood you use as a filler base. The bigger the pile the more heat it will create as the material decomposes and the longer and faster it will keep decomposing. Keep adding to this pile every year and you will always have a supply.

We live in southern Nevada, and I saw my first bobcat about a year ago. It was the first time I had ever seen one where I live in over 20 years. My neighbor down the street came into contact with a bobcat, and her golden retriever started chasing it in the bobcat swiped at him. And just that one swipe caused that poor dog to get over 60 stitches. So be very careful with your girls out there. I know it’s very rare, but encounters do Happen. It is special to see them because they are literally like ghost you hear about them, but you never see them.

i really appreciate you gals doing a deep dive into the possible failures of and the time-consuming maintenance required when you are using an incinerating toilet --- the info in this video helped me to nail down the concept that a more simple composting toilet, like the Trelino (as opposed to the much more complicated Air Head or Nature's Head), is the right way to go, for me. (it has also helped that so many vanlife channels have shown how THEY handle this situation, literally allowing me to see with my own eyes what it's actually like to live with a specific product or system over a period of time.)

When we lived in Ireland we used to burn peat or "turf" for our fires as it was way too damp to have wood anywhere outside as the humidity was always over 65%. We used to have piles of it for the winter and every time we got the the bottom it was clear that a rat family had lived there. Occasionally we saw rats that were about the size of a small cat, so not too bad. Having dogs meant that they would never come near the house so it was fine. I found mice worse to deal with as they are fearless and come in the house, peeing and pooing everywhere - *shudders*

We've lived off-grid for 45+ years and I love your videos. I love watching you learn. . . and teach. . . and with such humor. Our experience has lots of parallels with yours (40 yrs earlier), but we find that watching your videos adds a whole other dimension to our experience. . .plus entertainment :)
I have no idea how common certain types of toilets are but realize that ours must not be too common since you don't mention it. Over the years I think we've tried most of them (except for the Cinderella type) till we found a "dry" toilet design with a separate urinal. (Note: We have also tried a "separator" toilet that a friend has, but prefer ours.) For years now it has proven to be the most maintenance free and has less odor and no energy inputs or even any on-going costs (if we use the bidet instead of toilet paper). We have found it to be less maintenance than even a standard flush toilet. We got the design from someone who said they were fairly common in some of the rural parts of Scandinavian countries. We try to always pee in the urinal (there is also a sit-down urinal that includes a bidet) so we keep the poo dried out. Toilet paper can go in with the poo and we have a bin for sawdust (that we never use unless a guest accidentally peed (alot) and it got too wet to easily dry. The toilet has an auto-closing lid and it is also ventilated, so there is no odor. . . not even as much odor as a standard flush toilet has. Once in awhile we dig a hole, empty the dry, flaky contents into it and cover with dirt . . .and later plant a perennial. The dry poo doesn't really provide as much volume as hoped for fertilizer, but the urine is. (It gets mixed into the grey water along with compost tea and/or the methane digester effluent to make an awesome fertilizer.)

I lived in a rural area and burned a large part of my trash, like anything cardboard or paper, any items that contained food were thoroughly rinsed and put into a separate outdoor garbage can with a tight fitting lid so no smells to attract critters, everything else went into garbage bags and sat on a concrete pad, not enclosed and I never had any issues with rats, cats or other vermin because there was no smell to attract them. I did have trash service but refused to pay $35 a month when I only had maybe 2 bags of trash and I could take my pickup absolutely overflowing to the dump for $5 once a year. I would also keep my aluminum separate and smash it to take to the recycling center and get a little money back.

Here's a tip for your Deer problem (eating away your trees). Hanging CD's on ropes at their eye level in the desired periphery, will make them walk around that periphery, as they don't like the reflection (sun flashing into their eyes). Some may not like CD's hanging everywhere, but some like the rainbow effect it creates.
Note: you will need a lot of them, as you have a big land and you don't want to compact them in one line. I say if you distance them by 2m (on that desired periphery) and at least 3 rows wide (staggered).
It's a working solution. If you don't mind the look.
    good luck!

I worked for many years my youth in the hospitality industry. My one rat experiences was being cornered by a rat in a store room with the door closed, and the rat did loops of the store while I panicked and tried to avoid it and escape the store, I laugh now but not funny then. Im not sure who was more scared the rat or me, but definitely not a fun experience. Hats off to the pied piper Crystal so cool under duress, poor Jas, brown trousers saved the incinerator for a while.

Something for you to consider. These animals all eat ticks:
    Frogs
    Lizards
    Chickens
    Squirrels
    Opossums
    Guineafowl
    Wild turkeys
    Ants and fire ants
SO it might be worthwhile to look into getting/attracting and setting up feeding stations around your homestead for these animals. I am sure the dogs chase the squirrels but it doesn't mean that you can't have a squirrel station back in the woods where you normally don't go with them. Just ideas to think about. Chickens also make composting easy

Just as an aside, if the excavator controls are backwards to what you're used to from excavators, they are (most likely) easy enough to swap around. Basically just swap the hoses at the valves for the controls that are backwards, and that's that.
