Very close call. That murky water is deadly. The sharks can't see very well and mistake divers for seals, and the divers can't see them coming. He is very lucky he wasn't bitten. It was a juvenile shark, probably not as confident as an adult but still very dangerous. Mistaken identity is the cause for all white shark attacks, this murky water is perfect conditions for that. I think he would have bit him on the second pass when he turned on him real fast, the spear really saved him I'd say.
all sharks are different like people that could of been a really pissed off shark and looking for something to rip to bites I love how people are experts all of a sudden from watching RUclips or TV them guys who take years to train and Study must be thinking why did I waste my time getting qualified in the subject
+Mitcellin man Exactly.I also have read comments of people comparing sharks with humans and saying that they some of them who attack do it cause they had a really bad day in work...
How are they morons? No one got hurt, they know what they are doing and it looks to me like they have a very exiting life,Unlike some internet warriors .
If he was attacking, you would'nt of seen him at 0:45. He is a predator at heart, if he was hungry.. he was already behind you without you knowing a thing. He would not of hesitated.
+Kudo Sharks don't know human physiology, it most likely had no idea it was "behind" since most fish are able to see behind themselves to varying degrees. Most animals when hunting a larger prey will not all in attack the animal, but test it's movement with near passes, nips, and endurance chasing. It is possible since it's a great white it could have gone for an extreme bite. But that's pretty rare in deep water.
+Kudo That is really not true. I do shark fishing for recreation/tagging for research and have gotten to watch sharks a decent bit. You only see a quick first pass strike now and again. A lot of the time you will see them pass the bait once or twice, or do a close pass, before hitting. More alpha predator sharks seem to investigate more. The most I've seen a shark prepare to strike was a mako, and it actually tried to get the bird near my bait instead of the bait... after almost 1.5 hours of circling and preparing.
David Murphy Yeah I kinda worded that wrong I mean that if he's seeing the shark for the first time, chances are it's preparing rather than about go for him.
+Cortexion chances are a shark will eat you even when you're dressed up like sponge bob. sharks, like most other predators, are opportunistic hunters. they'll eat whatever they can get when they're hungry.
I see it like this, the shark is simply a hunter. It does not think as much as us, it's entire survival is based on knowing how to catch victims. as you can tell, it was doing just that. however, it did not commit, possibly because it didn't want to risk it's life over something it isn't sure about. sharks typically only pick on things that they think are weaker, if it were a dolphin or an Orca whale, the shark would likely attempt to book it. maybe it sensed danger when the human reacted with the weapon, so it disengaged briefly, and then it lost it's opportunity to strike when the human was ready and alert. i think the shark was actually trying to bite him, it just didn't expect the amount of resistance. you have to remember, human's react very differently than fish when they're in danger, fish just swim away, human's have defensive skills. something that sharks are not used to seeing from weaker\smaller prey. plus, the bubbles might had done something to the sharks senses.
You think if a man is skin diving the shark would be like "Oh its a human, not a seal, Im gonna keep away from him" like theyre supposed to distinguish land dwelling humans and put us off the menu because we have feelings. Human ignorance staggers me.
@@powderhungry6611 Im othe shark just swam by and than it got poked by the shocked diver, what shocked the shark too and made him turn around to see what him attacked. You can even see the shark opening its mouth while getting poked, must have hurt him.
@@dannyocean7155 True, and sharks are not dumb, they don't mistake us with seals or fish. They are curious what we are and some are curious if we are eatable. Others just are curious and won't attack. Depends n many things, if they are hungry, if they want to defend their territory. Often they are just territorial. In that case i guess the shark was just as surprised as the human. It turns around after being poked by the spear, it opens its mouth while being hit, probably because it hurt so it wanted to see what hit it.
Wow! Sharks are much smarter than I gave them credit for! Every time I’ve watched one of these videos, the shark always senses danger when the diver points the speargun at it. The sharks would always avoid getting poked, or try to avoid getting poked.
When you dive down you can see the body of the shark on the left side of the reef, before he comes close to you with his head and you notice him the first time from the left side? I wonder what the shark does there lurking so close by the reef but maybe he was surprised by your appearence too at first.

OMG 0:44 - You were nose to nose with him, it looked like he was looking right into your googles like 'yo something good to eat inside there?' lol... that's scary
I have enough respect for the ocean 'not to go near it'. the water is so damn deep, it is denser than a forest with the volume of camouflage, and it is a place where most creatures and predators have grown senses that allow them to hunt without visually seeing something. you're naive to think that the ocean is free for us to find food in, the shark was there to remind you that you're not in a playground buddy. these are hunting grounds, the only place that humans cannot dominate and multiply. sharks are as lethal as one of those prehistoric dinosaurs, they're very exceptional predators with pure instinct to eat just about anything. it is just so careless to wonder into these places, as soon as you get into that deep dense ocean you're back in an older world. the ocean has hardly changed since the dinosaurs, it still has very scary apex predators that humans don't dare go near.
Bro that’s so terrifying. Something so big going invisible down there so quickly. It didn’t have to go far before vanishing, and it could probably see the diver still. 😰
Same happened to us in April this year . Went Spearfishing in Hartenbos(where they live) , shore diving , about 180-200 m from the shore. He came out of nowhere. Will upload video soon. I though that day was my last day , all I did was pray while swimming backwards towards the beach . On the video he was coming my way , then turned around , moving towards me again and then got distracted by the fish on the buoy that was about 2.5 m dragging behind us . When it got to shallow for him he turned around .
The shark would have been attracted by the boat and probably kept an eye on the divers going down, it was only when the diver reached the bottom that the Shark felt confident enough to check him out. I don't think there was any chance of a full blown attack here, if the the shark had senced something he wanted, it would have attacked from underneath as the diver was resurfacing.
The truth is that one great white at that size could attack and kill a diver from any angle in few seconds. They can move over 50 km/h and their prey-recognition hability is far better than people think. Humans are not a target for them, and that's the only reason why you can see hundreds of shark videos interacting with humans and no real attacks in them (maybe one day, they are wild animals after all). It's the same reason why other big sea predators don't attack us. Thousands of years of evolution determine that if you swim with a shark, probably nothing gonna happen. If you walk next to a wild land predator (big enought) you probably will be attacked, killed or eaten. Maybe all at once...
You never take your eye's off of a big shark or swim away from it without facing it directly, this guy proved why. narrowly avoiding a second attempt on his ass near the surface. jeeez, these guys are diving in the open ocean (the marine equivalent to the wild west) and they act like they never watched any of the millions of videos on Great Whites before that say "face the shark at all times, if you want to avoid getting bitten". this guy clearly panicked and was very lucky that day to not lose a leg right before he reached the surface.
@@eronicava3724 yeah they're ambush predators and they're absolutely deterred by being seen but...once they've decided that you don't pose a threat and might rather be a meal....getting out as quick as poss might be the best plan. The most unnerving part is the trip back to the surface and not knowing where the great white is. Those two legs underneath you dangling like "drumsticks" lol
what's point of getting out of water. ..not that big or aggressive of great white. ..if you are diving in areas where great whites you are already taking the risk, that shark can smell and see you long long time b4 you can. ..if he wanted to attack you you're fkd anyways. worst thing to do is panic and swim away. ..you can't escape ashark you are just going to look like injured prey. the shark is used to hunting things that run away from it. best thing to do is hold ground stay calm and try to look intimidating. a human under water with a bunch of gear on looks weird to a shark, he was just checking you out. it's possible that shark has never seen a human before. ..that's the best thing you got going for you

you're actually stupid, sharks haven't survived since the dinosaurs for no reason, they are smarter than you think and can distinguish of what is a seal and what is not, dumb ass.
I have never seen a spearo go up so fast. That was a scary encounter. If i cant see 15 feet infront of me i dont spearfish for that reason. This has happened to me with a bullshark and i literally pissed myself, cant imagine having the same encounter with a great white
I like how these "great white" close encounters are all with Whites that couldn't be considered adult. If I had to guess at MOST that shark was maybe 12 feet long if not smaller. A Great White that size while it can still bite is not NEARLY as dangerous as a 14+ footer and you notice you never see those on these Go-Pro videos. Why? Because for those shark curiosity is taking a very large bite out of something.
There was a tipping point somewhere in this video at which everyone in the boat was suddenly at a much higher risk of being shot with a loaded speargun than they ever were of being attacked by that shark.
+Damon Hargrave The shark being aggressive would result in it mouthing the diver. They'd go bite him a little to see if he's food. No mouthing = no aggression. They're not stupid.

@@candyman9798I'm 100% positive the fatal Great Shark attack which Incognito mentioned did happen, but I think he has the year wrong. It was around 20th September 1987, not 1989. I remember because I was on my honeymoon, sunbathing on a Corfu beach, reading a British newspaper called The Sun, detailing the attack from the day before. It took place in the Adriatic Sea, northern area of the Med. It will always stick in my mind because as I was reading about it I noticed my husband had swam out too far from the shore and I panicked, thinking he might become sharkbait too!
@@wendy-21 I can’t find one for 1987 either, there’s a few incidents with sharks in Italy but none of them fatal except for 1962 and 2015. Do you have a link or something
@@candyman9798 No idea on a Link, Candyman, unfortunately. Well that is a strange one🤔 as I'm absolutely adamant on the date ('cos I'm still married to my husband) and I can remember it was The Sun newspaper from the day before, which we bought in the little town of Kassiopi on the way down to the beach. We stayed there between the 14th to the 28th of Sept and we'd been there about 6 days or so when it happened. The Sun rag said the young man died from the Great White Attack in the Adriatic. He was in his early 20's. Sorry I can't help with a Link as I've no idea. I should imagine The Sun would have the news piece in their archive, but that won't be much help to you! I must admit I looked for the attack within the last year myself but had no luck either. I hope you find out about it as I remember reading it as if it was yesterday.👍😊
dammmmn, when the sharked turned around for a second go, that got me nervous. That spear came in handy.
The shark probably turned around because it was poked by the spear first while swimming by. It wanted to see what attacked it. Both seem surprised.
I thought the first rule of SCUBA diving was "don't panic."
+W. deflect Hard to do that when a fish larger than you with razor-sharp teeth swims past you in absolute silence and completely disappears into the water 10 feet away only to turn around and swim straight at you XD
+W. deflect I believe this is free-diving as well. Controlled ascents and descents are not necessary.
+W. deflect These guys aren't scuba diving, they are simply free-diving. The don't panic rule is still valid in any dangerous encounter though.
+W. deflect That goes out the window when a Great White is nearby. If ever there's a time to panic, that's it.
+W. deflect The first rule is don't stop breathing. You are either joking or never scuba dived.
Whres is the part he attacks?
+João Paulo Reis Nowhere, this title is click bait.
+João Paulo Reis 0:49 here it is
João Paulo Reis looked pretty god damn close to chunking him up right there I’d say. It even followed him to the surface. That murky water made it a dangerous encounter.
BiFuRcAt3D DuPLiCaTuS he was just curious sharks are just as curious as any other marine creature
the ocean would have risen by the value of my bladder.
Guys are brave diving in that viz!
.. i'm not the smartest guy.. but i sure as hell know not to dive when water conditions are like that.
they are like this permanently is SA
Wow that was fun to watch from here :). good video!
Mooi man...I think I would have slightly kakked in my suit. Note to self: Don't swim in Arniston next time I'm there....
Johan says all this with his feet still dangling in the water. He's a straight boss!
True although he would have let him go but still the diver would be bleeding bad
all sharks are different like people that could of been a really pissed off shark and looking for something to rip to bites I love how people are experts all of a sudden from watching RUclips or TV them guys who take years to train and Study must be thinking why did I waste my time getting qualified in the subject
+Mitcellin man Exactly.I also have read comments of people comparing sharks with humans and saying that they some of them who attack do it cause they had a really bad day in work...
It would help if he didn't dress up like an over-fed seal.
pervertt :D

You are a fuckwit. Trying to make out you are smart lol.
why were you even doing that where there could be a great white???? lol...Like how Francios flew into the boat
The shark was the one surprised, he behaves like "what the f.. what is this .. Oh shit it's ugly i'm out"
why in the world do you link to the current video?
If he was attacking, you would'nt of seen him at 0:45.
He is a predator at heart, if he was hungry.. he was already behind you without you knowing a thing. He would not of hesitated.
+Kudo That fucking grammar mate.
SACPH4N70M i'm saying if its legitimately hungry, thats normally why attacks happen in the first place right?
+Kudo That is really not true. I do shark fishing for recreation/tagging for research and have gotten to watch sharks a decent bit. You only see a quick first pass strike now and again. A lot of the time you will see them pass the bait once or twice, or do a close pass, before hitting.
More alpha predator sharks seem to investigate more. The most I've seen a shark prepare to strike was a mako, and it actually tried to get the bird near my bait instead of the bait... after almost 1.5 hours of circling and preparing.
David Murphy
Yeah I kinda worded that wrong I mean that if he's seeing the shark for the first time, chances are it's preparing rather than about go for him.
Rushes out of water in terror but leaves feet lingering in water afterward.
Let me dress up like a seal and then be shocked that an apex predator was interested in eating me.
+Cortexion
chances are a shark will eat you even when you're dressed up like sponge bob. sharks, like most other predators, are opportunistic hunters. they'll eat whatever they can get when they're hungry.
You think if a man is skin diving the shark would be like "Oh its a human, not a seal, Im gonna keep away from him"
like theyre supposed to distinguish land dwelling humans and put us off the menu because we have feelings.
Wow that was so close. I would have had heart failure. He just kept coming back again and again. Persistent bugger.
When you dive down you can see the body of the shark on the left side of the reef, before he comes close to you with his head and you notice him the first time from the left side?
I wonder what the shark does there lurking so close by the reef but maybe he was surprised by your appearence too at first.
Meanwhile, your fins look like small seals floating on the surface...

@@dannyocean7155 They put us off the menu because we're unfamiliar, you also do not eat random animals you see for the first time
OMG 0:44 - You were nose to nose with him, it looked like he was looking right into your googles like 'yo something good to eat inside there?' lol... that's scary
I have enough respect for the ocean 'not to go near it'. the water is so damn deep, it is denser than a forest with the volume of camouflage, and it is a place where most creatures and predators have grown senses that allow them to hunt without visually seeing something. you're naive to think that the ocean is free for us to find food in, the shark was there to remind you that you're not in a playground buddy. these are hunting grounds, the only place that humans cannot dominate and multiply. sharks are as lethal as one of those prehistoric dinosaurs, they're very exceptional predators with pure instinct to eat just about anything. it is just so careless to wonder into these places, as soon as you get into that deep dense ocean you're back in an older world. the ocean has hardly changed since the dinosaurs, it still has very scary apex predators that humans don't dare go near.
it is so scary when your diving in REALLY murky water and when you turn there is a 15 foot great white shark literally in your face
Poor shark, I'm sure he just wanted to try spearfishing.
Spearfishing in South Africa, what could go wrong ?
Love how the guy keeps his legs in the water.
actual 85 iq moment
Bro that’s so terrifying. Something so big going invisible down there so quickly. It didn’t have to go far before vanishing, and it could probably see the diver still. 😰
Amazing fish, looked like he was curious about the diver. That must have been one hell of an adrenaline rush, though.
Adrenaline: a solid 2 pound Turd liquified instantly while running hard down both legs.
Where was the location you were diving ?
0:44 you can see the shark screamed too
Same happened to us in April this year .
Wouldn't mind seeing that video
The shark would have been attracted by the boat and probably kept an eye on the divers going down, it was only when the diver reached the bottom that the Shark felt confident enough to check him out. I don't think there was any chance of a full blown attack here, if the the shark had senced something he wanted, it would have attacked from underneath as the diver was resurfacing.
This shark has very high IQ
@@betofernandez5524 They attack people all the time, and its purposely swept under the rug
Did he slip a power head on his spear when he got in the boat?
Respect, but how on earth do you scream like that under water??? I even hear a breath after the second scream.
Must be the shark breathing
Dude! Your feet are in the water. I lifted mine off the living room floor.
Glad you guys are ok! Terrifying.
Ur glad their ok?..what of they were human traffickers. Or wife beaters.....u dont know
Before he gets on the boat it made me want to pull my legs up fast. Omg that was scary!
"it almost ate me" *continue to leave feet overboard*
South africa boers?
You never take your eye's off of a big shark or swim away from it without facing it directly, this guy proved why. narrowly avoiding a second attempt on his ass near the surface. jeeez, these guys are diving in the open ocean (the marine equivalent to the wild west) and they act like they never watched any of the millions of videos on Great Whites before that say "face the shark at all times, if you want to avoid getting bitten". this guy clearly panicked and was very lucky that day to not lose a leg right before he reached the surface.
What if there was 2nd one that comes from behind .
I say to the boat as fast as u can
@@eronicava3724 yeah they're ambush predators and they're absolutely deterred by being seen but...once they've decided that you don't pose a threat and might rather be a meal....getting out as quick as poss might be the best plan. Besides that water was so murky, you'd have had to follow that shark from 2m behind to see it. After watching this I feel like I did after watching jaws the first time as a kid lol
Did you buy a new wetsuit or did the stain wash out?
That swim to the boat had to be the scariest moment of his life.
Amazing footage and a happy ending.
Yes a happy ending could've been bad considering all the Imagine filming your own death.
Hell nah to the nah nah nah
The most unnerving part is the trip back to the surface and not knowing where the great white is. Those two legs underneath you dangling like "drumsticks" lol
what's point of getting out of water. ..not that big or aggressive of great white. ..if you are diving in areas where great whites you are already taking the risk, that shark can smell and see you long long time b4 you can. ..if he wanted to attack you you're fkd anyways. worst thing to do is panic and swim away. ..you can't escape ashark you are just going to look like injured prey. the shark is used to hunting things that run away from it. best thing to do is hold ground stay calm and try to look intimidating. a human under water with a bunch of gear on looks weird to a shark, he was just checking you out. it's possible that shark has never seen a human before. ..that's the best thing you got going for you
What did it whisper in your ear that was so scary?
Yet, he keeps his feet dangling in the water!!
I think both of them just crapped themselves. The shark was totally, "What is that over there..." Then both met and "whoa dammit!!!" lol
what an exciting day for the shark.
Chilling observing fishes....
Shark: HELLO THERE
Well the sharks get curious you know. In murky waters they can't see well. You can see the visibility is shit. Looking for a meal and I guess if you look like a seal. I guess it saw he wasn't and left him alone.
I personally would have pooped a little. But yeah they're masters of their realm. Snuck right up on him lol.
SPIRIT DOT what a pathetic attempt to trigger.

you're actually stupid, sharks haven't survived since the dinosaurs for no reason, they are smarter than you think and can distinguish of what is a seal and what is not, dumb ass.
@ Danny Ocean
wouldn't it have been safer to stay on the sea bed for a while? the shark could have attacked from any angle as he swam up
To be fair hes free diving so can only hold your breath for so long 😅
And he lived by no skill of his own, but by the grace of God…
12 ft is an adult. Juveniles are 6-10ft.
There was a tipping point somewhere in this video at which everyone in the boat was suddenly at a much higher risk of being shot with a loaded speargun than they ever were of being attacked by that shark.
He was curious - didn't seem particularly aggressive to me... But then again I'm no shark expert.
Damon Hargrave
Are you a shark expert?
+ajnode i love you hahaha
may i ask, what have been your most coolest experience while diving? :)
+Damon Hargrave The shark being aggressive would result in it mouthing the diver. They'd go bite him a little to see if he's food. No mouthing = no aggression. They're not stupid.
+Damon Hargrave dude sharks bite buckets and propellers they aren't geniuses.
Swimming in cold murky green water. Kinda asking for it.

It seems to me, i scared more than this diver.
Don’t they make underwater .357s?
If they did there probably wouldn't be anything alive in the ocean.
Hahahahaha give dem space too
GET OUT OF THE WATER, BUT STILL HAVE LEGS OUT BECUASE IT'S COOL, SHARK WON'T EAT MY LEGS...
omfg.
Sharks don't eat legs.Only the upper body arms thighs buttocks head lots of head .
Hahahahaha Woeee
What I don't get is why hope out the water when you see the shark? I mean...they didn't factor in that there was a possibility of encountering a shark , a great white at that before diving in?
Nope nopety nope nope!
Why would you dive with such poor visibility?
because these clowns who go spear fishing and sea kayaking are Darwin award contenders. Not much in the brain department.
