Rock guitarist: plays 3 chords in front of 10000 people.
Jazz guitarist: plays 300 chords in front of 10 people.
Lucas: plays 3000 chords on RUclips.
🗿
Well, all three of them is awesome.
music isnt about how many chords you can play
@@miguelmouro230 eh thats kinda subjective really
@@hellishlycute imagine a guy going up on stage, chord book in hand, just to let out every single chord possible. the crowd goes wild
The more music theory I hear, the more mathematical it sounds.
Music and math are closely related, after all. Some go so far as to say music IS math. 👍
Isn't everything in existence math?
@@Strings-jg2to Pretty much.
Math is everywhere :)
It's the language of the nature.
@italkcrab that seems to be right because I suck at math and am good at identifying pattern recognitions.
Can jazz be any cooler?
Lucas: Well, acctually, YES!
yep, so this is Jazz, but this is Coolier Jazz)
I wish I had a music teacher like you. Not just reading from the script but feeling the outcome.
Me too
But i have a realy good guitar teacher
Use Lucas' patreon. He appears to be an excellent teacher!! And affordable too! Genius expert personable nd funny.:-)))
He offers skype lessons check his website
Corrected my so sorry, misspelling of your name. Lucas Lucas Lucas. Say it with me one more time. [:-))
Out of 100's of music theory videos I've watched, this one is among the best. I'll be studying the ideas and sharing it with all my friends! Cheers mate 👍 🍻
Me who started playing about a year ago: Tonic…. That goes with gin right?
Who's the one person who disliked this? Show and explain yourself!
I missed clicked while crying about my weak guitar knowledge.
it's probably pop producers
It was me... he should of double flated the fifth chord of sixth diminished... I've actually studied that concept and have no idea what he did or what I'm talking about.
Level 1-2: Pfff, I got this...
-Blink-
Level 3-5: put back the guitar on the wall...
"what Senpai can do after memoryzing >9000 chords" (TM)
You don't, you build them on the fly.
Aah yes from C maj to Constipation :)
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Wow, this is such a helpful way of providing an overview of how harmony can be developed further! I particularly love the animated diagrams showing what you're playing and where the chords come from.
This boosted everyone's knowledge. Those people like me stuck on what to study next. Thank youuuuuuuu!
Hello Lucas, this is a very good video. Thank You!
Real question: How long does it take you to arrange, for example, five pieces like these? Does it require much effort, or are you at a point where your knowledge makes it just happen? Besides the Barry Harris stuff you're still learning, I mean. And do you need to rehearse these pieces much before recording, or is everything already just 'there' because of all the years of practice? Also, I'm pretty sure I counted 3011 chords, but what do I know? I'm just an intermediate guitarist.
It goes pretty fast, since I’ve been doing it a long time. Many things become automatic from muscle and visual memory. So I can do it almost instantly. The last level I worked a bit on. When recording I usually do a couple of takes and choose the best ones of those. The hard and excruciating part is editing the actual video haha.
@@LucasBrar imagine being this cool
@@LucasBrar what a musical Chad,
>Aranges some music
>is Very easy
>Editing videos is harder.
@@LucasBrar Oh, damn, thanks, for replying, Dude! Your process sounds so satisfying. Not a constant struggle, like my workflow. Hahaha. Do you ever play electric?
@@rhynhardtk ooh I wanna see him ripp a fender apart with his teeth with the most awesome guitar face. Make Jimi proud!
Level 3 is the sweet spot for me: very digestable, but still interesting
Its because hes purposefully filling the melody with different chords to show the theory, but you could apply those concepts to only part of the music and get a simpler but still interesting song
Level 2 is good enough for me. Level 3 is still enjoyable, but beyond that just extra noises.
I've always wondered whether people say my music is boring whenever they yawn while I play. They say "keep playing" though, so maybe they like it.
Now I know why. I like basing my songs on C-F-G and playing around them. This just makes me want to study more music theory in the future. Thanks Lucas!
upto secondary dominant it was good then it just fell apart. May be it is just me but i like simple harmony and not putting too much emphasis on the harmony notes, in this case the melody is forced to take a backstage by all those complex harmonies at stage 4 and 5, however a great insight; Should help to write compositions that has cromaticism in the melodic motif.
tbh it's probably really hard to reharmonize the same melody in both simple and more advanced styles so that both would sound equally convincing, at least I haven't found any convincing enough tutorial on that topic on yt sadly :/
Level 1: the baby sleeps well
Level 2: the baby sleeps a bit uncomfortable, but okay
Level 3: the baby stays awake
Level 4: the baby have an existential crisis
Level 5: the baby decided to go to jazz school, wears fedora, and play guitar
I find it funny how you go from explaining diatonic triads directly to secondary dominants. There really is a level between just using diatonic chords and then secondary dominants. The whole idea of what happens when you simply add the 7th to the chord and how to resolve dominant seventh chords should be understood.
My favorite Level 2. Sweet and soothing melody. Others are too much mixed up and complex sound...
That was briefly one of the best and informative jazz harmony lessons I have ever seen.
Level 5 is where it goes dimensional, as if on a 🍄 and things aren't as they seem. Is that? Mm sounds like? I can hear bah bah black sheep ? No it's definitely maybe, whut is that? Over the 🌈,. No Waay!
I understood literally nothing but ordered some fried chicken
Noice man 🥱
hey Lucas. Great work. I caught your "different kinds of classical guitarists" vid a while back, which was hilarious. I didn't realize you had this content, too! LOVE that you touched on Barry Harris a bit. Great stuff
Thank you! Great content you have man, keep it up.
everything past level 2 doesnt sound "memorable" tho.... im a guitarist and a producer and love when the music gets spicy. but its only because i understand what is happening. someone plays some spicy chords and jazzy licks and i will always appreciate it, but ive found that music for most people is just "what sounds memorable"... non musicians typically only like songs and instrumentals that they can whistle to. So imo if us musicians go anything past level 2 here, it will ONLY appeal to other musicians. making music for musicians is beautiful. but sadly, musicians don't buy music.
I agree. Jazz is cool but K.I.S.S.
This is so useful. Thank you so much for such videos!
You are a superb music instructor. Thank you!!
Popstar: With my last paycheque I bought a new house. And the rest? Well, a Porsche.
Classic musician: With my last paycheque I went for a holiday. And the rest? Well, some new books.
Jazz musician: With my last paycheque I bought a new pullover. And the rest? Well, granny helped me out to pay for it.
I’ll stop at level 3 …
Ok.First i have to learn how to play c major chord
Great video :)
I was wondering what mic you use to record classical guitar: it sounds great!
Level 6: This level intentionally left blank
Level 7: Jacob Collier
I can play the part that doesn’t have the chords
Impressive! It was possible to understand between 3&4 lvl, but lvl 5. It was...wow! Amaizing!!! Genius 🤯
This was the best explanation of harmony I have ever seen 🤯🤯
Level 4 sounds amazing.
Nobody would be mad if you decided to do that 'deep dive' into Barry Harris-type theory; let's have a whole series on it! :)
Maybe the best guitar lesson on youtube.
When Beethoven said "If we think of music is an ocean, I am a grain of sand there." he was right.
What a lesson!! Absolutely fantastic!
Grazie 🙏
Wuauuu!!! Brutal explicación. La mejor que he oido y visto nunca. Gracias maestro!! You are the best . Thank you.
I miss all of these in university. I'm so lucky that I was able to learn some from a local Professor who is a Berklee graduate. Jazz is around the world. Thanks for this video. It's a memory for me
Wow! Way over my head, but it sounded wonderful! Thanks! :)
Yes. Studying harmony is really enjoyful. It's cool when you come up with something weird and good sounding :D
I'm really stuck on the MODAL level...
Young players... take advantage of this. Don't take this for granted
I literally learned barre chords from Beatle Cards with a magnifying glass in 1964.
This clip and the level 2 demo brings me back to what someone told me about learning music:
Focus on a good sound and not great technique as one can obscure the other.
I think it's amazing the way you explain many year of study in a video. I hope reach this level some day.
You need a doctorate to get pat level 5
Level 5 reminds me Joe pass
Why do U do this??? I hate U!!!! 😂😂
It's a joke!! Greetings from Brazil!!! U are simply the best!!! Love U bro!!!
@2:49 - why it is C#m7, it should be "C#m 7 flat 5" because we are raising half step from C, so Major third became minor third and Fifth should become flat fifth. Pls help me if anyone knows the answer.
The best harmony manual in six minutes! Bravo, maesto!
Never ending lifetime harmony exploration endeed. Tommy Emmanuel and You are living proof ❤ that final output is THE MUSIC 🎶🎹🎸🎼
Remember that one line from the Dire Straits song Sultans of Swing? "Check out Guitar George he knows all the chords." Well, Lucas, you are not only what I like to call a Guitar George, but you ALSO have that music conservatory education-type classical mastery. So, yeah, 3,000 chords? I do not doubt it.
Wonderful video. I'm aware of Barry's approach but haven't gotten into it yet. Thanks!
Great very clearly put. Thank you

The level 3 was probably the most musical.
Level 4 and 5 is too much. I understand this is a lesson.
I am just saying. I am sure in a real performance you wouldn't overplay it.
Hi Lucas I would like to learn more than you teach on this video. How can I do? Patreon? Can you explain what I will find if I subscribe Thanks
Ain't that nice... Please try "I want You... She's so heavy" but it's JAZZ :)

Video Idea for you : Songs you didn't know the name, on GUITAR.
Tommy Emmanuel! Can you hear us? I'm at level 3 though, next 2 are too much to my ear :)
Haha i feel the same, it eventually gets complicated for my ears to enjoy, they get confused.
Ohh Dude, Barry Harris gave as so amazing concept, glade to see your interpretation 6th diminished scale
..thank you, that is a very clear approach to harmony. finally i learned smthg. i will try to incoporate this..
Hey Lucas, I'm not sure if you would read this but can you suggest a good source for music theory? A book perhaps.
Thanks Lucas.Your videos are always interesting!
Thanks Lucas, u really helped me see the endless amount of possibilties on guitar, but can u plz play feel good inc but it's jazz
With some of my composing using theory I uaed the idea of painting by numbers but realised i could only go so far (
before it sounded roboticly ugly) and had to break the patterns I was following. Had to add the human touch.
Thank you! Very useful my friend. Now if I can everyone in my cover band to go along!
Lucas please write what microphone here in the guitar? thx 🌘🎧🌒
Nice Lucas!!! Inspiring lesson
I just don’t get it…why 25 dislikes ?? How is it possible with such a great content
Just did an over the rainbow harmonization is music class. Why is his infinitely better. He carries the melody with chords that progress well. I have some cool chord progressions but nothing this cohesive or diverse
That's fucking amazing!, kudos to you👍🏻
Great insight how to improve . Thanks thanks for share Lucas.
and here am i... slow learning and awfully often mistake F and Dm cuz its sounds similar sometime i just use F when its should be Dm
Can you play Gucci gang or ESSKEETIT by Lil Pump?
Thank you so much for that incredible insights, Wonderboy! Love the calm and clear presentation. Your skills are amazing, all the best!
Mr Brar ,i spend my life finding a real music mentor like you,it ‘ll be really honored to be your student! would u pls tell how to contact you 🤗
Have you ever done a video on Allan Holdsworth? I'm curious about your reaction to "Low Levels, High Stakes". Just mind-boggling, extra-dimensional musicality.
His solo on "Final Project" is incredible as well.
This is the guitar playing version of Davie504.
Lucas it would be nice once in a while if you did a video just playing a piece for us , ?
Level 6: Skip all the theory, slap a 5th on top of the root, sprinkle some distortion over it and have fun.
what is the name of this melody???
I'm Brazilian! Love❤️❤️
Music theory hurts my mind, but i want to learn it so bad. I am more into metal stuff so, learning it would be so helpful.
Amazing, starting with level 3. Awesome.
How about, Still D.R.E but its Jazz, noob to level 10
I quite literally know nothing about music theory, but this was an entertaining watch none the less.
a million thanks for what you've shared ....
Way over my head still but fascinating.
There is grey matter all over my walls. Mind completely blown.
I always forget about modal interchange as an option!
Is there some course out there that could help get me to step 3? I’m like at 0.5 with basic chords.
Great, Lucas!
The only dislikes on this video have to be other youtubers you just shit on with this one I just had the biggest light build going off in my head moment thank you
I from indonesia , i like your video , This amaizing👏👏👏
So you're the guitar George who can play all the chords??
0,75x speed - thank me later :)
You didn’t use B half diminished in level 2. Dissapointing
