    You can see in the replays that she steps in front of home plate. Anyone that knows the game even at a basic level will know that you don't need lines to know that she was out of the box at that point.

      I'm an umpire. The rule is that one foot has to be at least touching the line of the batters box. You can have your toes on the plate at contact as long as your heel is touching the line. If I had to make my best guess in this spot I'd actually let it go. I think the one foot is even with the front. Even so with no clear batter's box I can't see making that call with a tie game late in the game.

    • @erness11111

    Looks like a very good call by the plate up. Her plant foot is directly in front of the plate and her trailing foot is in the air. The announcers point out that the lines have been erased, but the ump was still able to use good judgement.

    • @juwelsc4862
      @juwelsc4862 7 лет назад +14

      You are half correct sir. Batters can have a foot in front of home plate and still make contact that is legal. However, BOTH feet need to be inside of the box at the time of contact. So when she made contact, one foot was in front of the plate(which is legal) but the other foot was in the air which makes it illegal. You are correct in saying that she is out but the reason why is incorrect. She is out because she did not have both feet in the batters box, not because one foot was in front of home plate. Hope this clarifies things and yes i am an umpire in Ontario Canada.

    • @erness11111
      @erness11111 7 лет назад +5

      only one foot needs to be touching any part of the line of the batters box if the other is in the air. rule 6.06 i believe. unless there's a local modification which i doubt

      Robert M you are correct, her left foot is out of the box to the left, it is not too far towards the field. Watch the slow motion replay and notice you can see part of the line of the left batters box. Extend that line across and she's behind it. She did step out at contact when her left foot was directly in front of home plate.

  • @FactsMatter
    @FactsMatter 7 лет назад +44

    Absolutely the right call on the out. Even without lines, the foot was in front of home plate. That's DEFINITELY out of the box.
    Once the manager draws the line on the ground, he needs to be ejected. She failed by keeping him in the game.

  • @GhostHostMemories
    @GhostHostMemories 7 лет назад +23

    so the issue wasn't that she was too forward (to the playing field), rather she was too far to the left, and thus covering the right side of home plate?

    • @Dabubby
      @Dabubby 7 лет назад +23

      The issue is that she stepped directly in front of the home plate. This makes her out of the box at the point of contact and makes the umpire correct in the call.

    • @jeffreyfeighner7187
      @jeffreyfeighner7187 7 лет назад +4

      Correct. There is an inside line of the baters box. She had covered up home plate which means she is out of the batters box.

    • @bman342a
      @bman342a 7 лет назад +2

      No. As stated above, the batter's box extends in front of the plate, you can see in the replay where they lines, albeit very smudged, are. She had her foot inside the box when making contact.

    • @Subangelis
      @Subangelis 7 лет назад +4

      There is no box directly in front of the plate. Her foot was in front of
      the plate. Since there is no box in front of the plate, she stepped
      out of the box.
      NCAA Women's Softball Rule 11.2.6 " At the moment of bat-ball contact,
      the batter may not contact the pitch when any part of her foot is
      touching home plate, even though she may be touching the lines of the
      batter’s box. In addition, the batter may not contact the pitch when her
      entire foot is touching the ground completely outside the lines of the
      batter’s box.

    Pause the video at 1:14 just before the batter makes contact. Back point of home plate is visible, and you can see that the front of her left foot is almost in line with it. Now, home plate is 17" wide, which means that half of home plate = 8.5". The distance between the right edge of home plate and the left edge of the batters box is 6". This means that unless this girl's foot is about 14.5" long at the very least, she is entirely out of the batter's box.
    Good call by the ump, sloppy footwork by the batter.

    • @milwaukeejt
      @milwaukeejt 7 лет назад

      When the batter made contact, her left foot was on the ground, in front of home plate. You don't need lines to determine that that is out of the batter's box. In all forms of baseball and softball, the batter's boxes run parallel to and inches away from the sides of the plate. It is impossible to to have a foot in front of the plate, and in the batter's box.
      On a slap, like the one used here, an experienced umpire knows to check the position of the batter's feet as soon as contact is made. That only requires a tiny flick of the eyes, less time than it takes for the batter's foot (the one on the ground) to change position.

    If a coach is concerned after an out of the box call and says another is b.s. because of the lines being gone, there's a simple solution. Ask for the lines to be chalked after the FIRST CALL. The lines are gone because the players are being coached to erase them but kicking and foot dragging over them as much as possible. Try stepping OVER THEM like BASEBALL players do in a REAL SPORT and they'll still be there. Jesus, you've got about a half and acre there just to make it is as hard as possible for anyone to NOT get the pitch in the "strike zone" and for the batter to NOT be able to at least HIT the ball so there are no no-hit strikeouts where the batter doesn't even tip the ball. And why? So the girls can look as "good" as the boys.
