  • Terry Real, psychotherapist and founder of Relational Life Therapy, specializes in working with men, particularly narcissistic, or what he calls “grandiose” men. In this deeply informative and timely interview, Terry talks to us about the different forms of narcissism, how narcissism develops, and the ways it emerges in relationships. In an era with Donald Trump as our leader, male narcissism rears its toxic head societally as well as within relationships, resulting in painful psychic and emotional consequences. We find out how narcissism expresses itself emotionally and sexually and ways that we can begin to deconstruct patriarchy by helping men to be more relational.

What Terry says at 18:00 is genius. The feminine serving to absorb the disowned pain because energy doesn't evaporate - it has to go somewhere.

Great interview but I have to admit that growing up gay, I always felt like I didn’t fit into the prescribed gender binary of acceptable behaviour so while I find Terry’s ideas insightful, I’m always left feeling like there is a whole range of relationship dynamics that aren’t a part of his descriptions of men. Homosexuality has much to bring to the table regarding men, relationships and mental health and like feminism, I think it is very relevant to be included in the conversations on relationships, gender and mental health.

From your example, I think "horrified" would better describe how one would feel losing control of their hand.

That implies the person has a conscience...isn't entitled to do whatever the please without consequence...and also is capable of feeling empathy for others. A narcissist has to be walked through each of those things, step by step.

I do NOT understand this talk about rape fantasies women supposedly have? I cannot imagine a more horrific, demeaning, lifethreaning experience than to be raped...although it's thankfully never happened to me, that is how I imagine it must be for a rape victim. What could *possibly* be sexually exciting about something so utterly horrifying and life threatening; that would make me want to vomit...from pure terror.
I simply do not get rape fantasies at all, and it's so entirely foreign that I can't relate to how someone else COULD find "rape" sexually exciting. It's so nwarped, it's actually sickening.
I mean, if the woman is a violent psychopath, or a malignant narcissist, it makes sense to me that they would find rape sexually arousing...because it's largely psychopaths and malignant narcissists who rape, along with sociopaths.
This is a DISTURBING and DANGEROUS mixed message to send men. This is the kind of shit that allows ego maniacs like that dick who was appointed to the USSC by trump.

Not talking politics here. They are talking culture and psychology.

Conservative can also mean something slightly different than the Conservative political party. Conservativism: "a political OR theological orientation advocating the preservation of the best in society and opposing radical changes"

I'm not sure you would understand anything being said in this video if you don't see the truth here. Don't be blind as to the actual personality disorder Trump has. Because of his upbringing, he exhibits adaptive strategies that equate to narcissism. If you educate yourself about this, you would see it also. It's very obvious regardless of your governing preferences. Narcissism can be very very destructive especially to children. Most of his followers were weakened and hurt by narcissistic parents.

Why ignore the orange elephant in the room? As Terry clearly outlines, our grandiose patriarchal narcissistic culture awarded its top representative to the most important political role in the world, and now thank God people are waking up. Hopefully it was enough amidst all the political hand-wringing and shushing about talking politics.

Politics? I heard no mention of politics whatsoever.
Trump has been a pathological narcissist since he was 5 years old. He was an overly promiscuous, globetrotting playboy in the 70s and had "straighten up" his act because no one was taking him seriously in business because of his overt sexual promiscuity.
When I lived in Manhattan in the 90s, he was conning and cheating just about every contractor who worked with him, which is ultimately why he had to leave NYC...because no contractor would work with him anymore.
He has started so many fraudulent businesses, along with some legitimate ones. Decent human beings with a conscience don't defraud people, and they certainly don't start fake universities in order to be able to collect student loans from the government with no true education provided in a reciprocal manner.
Then there are all his many extramarital affairs, to which he feel completely and utterly entitled. He's a f'ing narcissist as has been for decades. Guess what else, so is Bill Clinton.
Did you know how many times Bill Clinton was accused of rape? When I voted for him twice, I sure as hell didn't know. I sure as heck know now.
NONE OF THAT HAS TO DO WITH POLITICS. It has to do with these slimey, entitled, power-hungry men who think they can do as they please and suffer no consequences in the process.
That has ZERO to do with politics.
Try learning something here today....like how warped your own perceptions are, and your unwillingness to really *listen* to what this man is saying.
YOU are the only one who brought politics into this: YOU and no one else.
