One reason why I like Naked Gun (aside from the nostalgia) is that it actually tries to get you to care about the story and characters. As absurd as everything is, it sets up a real plot, an actual bad guy, and has an actually "big" ending with the baseball setting. (Edit: Ah, I see Greg touches on this around 33:10.)
Leslie Nielsen is an absolute icon of comedy. Honestly he's the sole reason I started watching comedy in the 80's. Also can we appreciate George Kennedy, as the sidekick? He and Nielsen always had great chemistry, and George was an all-round great actor no matter the role.
Ed is played by Alan North in _Police Squad!,_ but the studio insisted on having someone more famous in the role. It even kind of fits in with the wordplay humor, too, since George Kennedy is both figuratively and literally a bigger name. Certainly a great choice to fill the role, even regardless of his name. Four people revised their roles from the show. The first one is obviously Leslie Nielsen. There’s also Ed Williams as Ted Olsen, Tiny Ron Taylor as not at all tiny Al… and Dr. Joyce Brothers! In that order as well.
I love the great John Houseman's cameo as the driving instructor. He spent decades teaching acting at Julliard but is best known for his Academy Award winning role in The Paper Chase. I recognize him as Edward Stratton II, grandfather of Ricky on Silver Spoons.
The Zucker Brothers relaunched Leslie Nielsen's career. He was a tough guy leading man in the 50s and 60s, but he sort of aged out. AIRPLANE! brought him back, and the Zucker Brothers created the Drebbin character just for him.
To me the main leading role that Leslie Nielsen had in the 50s was the lead in the Sci-fi classic the Forbidden Planet. Outside of Naked Gun/Airplane, my favourite role of him was in 4 episodes of Due South where he played a Mountie, which his father actually was
@@briandarroch I remember those episodes of Due South when i was a kid, I loved that show, the main character was so square but got the job done. The one scene that i remember was someone pulling a knife on the main character and him saying something like 'Im going to have to confiscate that'. I was delighted when Leslie Neilson turned up as the dad.
18:25 - 18:50 Best reaction I've ever seen to this hilarious little exchange. It's always fun for us oldsters to see a new generation finding these comedy classics and enjoying them. Great reaction and thanks for posting.
I wondered that, too. But then I saw age-restricted censorship in the scene on the ledge when Drebin grabs the woman's breast and the subsequent statue's erection and even the word 'dildo' is muted. Such a shame
Leslie Nielsen is so hilarious in this movie because he delivers every line as seriously as if he were in the most dramatic police procedural ever made
Once again Greg knocks it out of the park when it comes to choosing movies to react to! The entire trilogy is hilarious (as well as the t.v. show that inspired it "Police Squad")
The straight faced delivery from all the actors sells this movie because you really can’t believe that any of the actors were able to maintain a straight faced during production.
The Naked Gun is one of my favourite films. It has brilliant writing and is an absolute masterclass from Leslie Nielsen on how to be incredibly funny by playing a character that isn't trying to be, he was such a talent. Thanks for the reaction.
It isn't a movie, but the 6 episodes of the original Police Squad series this is a sequal to are definitely worth watching. I'd love to see you do a first watch of those!
Police Squad was, to me, the first real “water cooler” series in that nearly everyone at work would be talking about the previous night’s episode. An absolute classic. The theme song is still my favorite.
that wedding band looks good on you Greg!! 😆 congrats brother. recently introduced my girlfriend to naked gun, it’s a dream come true to see you reacting to this. it’s my favorite pre-2000s comedy next to airplane.
It's great to see younger generations appreciating the sheer insanity of these movies and TV shows. They came during a unique time in history, and I don't think they could be replicated.
I just saw your Moana one and was thinking "What film could I suggest to Greg" but never in my life would I have thought of this one! So excited! It is such a good one :D
@@piotrswat169 honestly, how has he a movie based youtube channel? I have seen more films and I have rarely seen any. I just keep on watchin the same 20 that I know 🤣
Leslie Nielsen is amazing. From playing it straight down the middle as the hunky captain in Forbidden Planet, to these marvelous Police Squad movies (based on the TV series), hes simply fantastic.
So the jokes don't end when the credits show in Zucker Abrhams Zucker films you have to watchimg in the crsdits to see all of the jokes they slip in with all of the names.
Love this movie. I hope you do the 2 sequels. The absurdity is perfectly absurd that it works. Another 2 movie’s similar to this are Hot Shots and Hot Shots part Deux. Also, Congratulations on getting married.
Denmark here, my name is Frank (though not Drebin), and part of my family are all Nielsen's. Leslie Nielsen's father was actually a police officer, or more correctly he was an immigrant from Denmark who joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. His brother became the Deputy Prime Minister of Canada for a few years in the 80's and his half-uncle was the Danish-American actor Jean Hersholt who twice was awarded an honorary Oscar and a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and in his honor the "Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award" is still a special Oscar named by the Oscar Academy. The kind of secretly funny part is that when he is offered a Cuban cigar he said he is "Dutch-Irish, my father was from Wales", because in real life Leslie Nielsen's mother was from Wales, so he deliberately switched the "Wales" part from his mother to his father in this joke, he then go on to invite Priscilla Presley out for dinner, saying that he knows this out of the way place, that serve great [Danish] Viking food. Btw, when Leslie Nielsen died, ESPN published a hilarious obituary for the opera singer "Enrico Pallazzo" in his honor, that you can go look up.
I don't know why, but for some reason my favorite gags in any of these movies are always the ones that subtly poke fun at the movie-making process: like when Frank walks around the wall instead of going through the door because it's just a "set", when he clearly is using a stunt double to do all the gymnastic flips, when the villain is using a blonde blow-up doll as he's escaping the baseball stadium. All that $#!T - just cracks me up. 🤣
glad you liked it so much. these are my fave type of movies: crazy insane comedy. parodies. love them. probably someone has already told you, but this is based off an old TV show called Police Squad & it is just as hilarious. Not sure if it's available on DVD/blu-Ray or any streaming services. Can't to see if you watch the other 2 films.
I suggest you also watch the series that this film series spun off from called 'Police Squad'. Same cast and crew for the most part and it's only 6 episodes. It could easily be binged in a afternoon.
Great breakdown of why the movie clicks on so many levels. At its most silly it's a total guilty pleasure but some moments have such a firm grasp of the absurd mixed with the deadpan it's impossible not be won over. It's a really feel-good movie too with some nice levity to it, and it feels like an attempt to make an actual movie and not lazily shoehorn in jokes at every given opportunity that feel jarring to the narrative. Also Leslie Nielsen is my opinion one of the finest comedy actors to have existed. The NG trilogy and Airplane are his masterpieces, and there's a couple of other amusing movies he done too, but I think the team of Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker knew how to capitalise on his comic potential the best. Side note I always thought if they were to do a remake then Liam Neeson would be the prime candidate for Frank Drebin and omg I just read they're eyeing him for one! If it doesn't get made I can live with that but I definitely think he can pull off the same comedic timing and delivery.
Omg lol i have seen this film a hundred times and you have pointed out jokes i never noticed before, like the different positions the Queen and Drebin have in the press photos and the badge Kaddafi was wearing about the weight loss. This film is the Citizen Kane of comedy
For those that don't know the movie spawned from a failed TV show called Police Squad and while the movie takes a few jokes from the show it's a great watch and is readily available on Bluray for dirt cheap.
The villains secretary is the mother of 2 of the directors, the Zucker brothers. She was in their other movies too, she played a bank lady in Ghost, for instance
For those confused by the baseball player with the Vaseline under his ball cap. If you put Vaseline on the ball it weighs it down and makes the ball curve better. It's considered illegal in the game.

Seriously, you have to see some "POLICE SQUAD!" episodes.. this movie is the sequel to that... the whole intro bit is about what Frank has been up to since the show was cancelled.
We need more movies like this, after watching the nice guys and the chemistry between Ryan gosling and Harrison ford outside on press junkets during blade runner 2049, a movie with Harrison and Ryan gosling in this type of manner would absolutely rule, Harrison has that deadpan face which can pull off what Leslie did in these films.
