Erased my comment because you don't like being called out on your laziness. Post different clips idiots.
One of these sold in 2019 for $1,500. It came from the Tupelo Auto Museum and wasn’t as nice as this one. I believe it sold at the Bonhams Auction. The $1,500 didn’t include the auction fees.
Lol anything newer would be great
I know a guy who knows a guy who knows everything about knowing guys
@@nickrodgers8335 lmao I feel like older guys especially ones who are in businesses that are somewhat similar to Ricks always "know a guy". That's literally like their go to line whenever they're trying to say that they need some help with something but WITHOUT actually saying they need help with whatever it is that they're trying to do and accomplish, ya know? Super funny and definitely just like the very classic old man line for whenever they're in any scenarios like this or ones that are at least somewhat similar to this one to at least a certain degree.
I don't know why its so satisfying to see rick getting low balled
I do 😂
And he did too! That thing would be the crown jewel of a lot of car guy's garages, guys with money, old cars and a love of the past.
It was worth the 600 the OG was asking and probably a little more.
Its rare but he definetly does his share of it!
Danny should have told him he had pay to frame the machine just to screw with hm.
@@fishyfool no it won't I wouldn't touch it with a 12 foot pole stop acting like you know car/equipment I wouldn't buy this for 50$
I used one of those back in the day, I'd give you 300 cash for it any day as long as it worked like that and it would cost me 200 dollars in gas as well.👍❤🇺🇸
Everybody: Free Britney
Rick: The best I can do is free Bill Cosby
Lol
You mean pill Cosby
You got me on that one
Lol this was the best!
I know Corey is usually thinking about Panda Express but I think it interferes with how he haggles
Danny: "$100 and not a penny more. I have to get it framed"
Danny: "I got a friend that can come and look at it, and tell me what it's worth"
* brings in the retired mechanic that sold it to them *
@@VidzOnComputer lol
@@VidzOnComputer W! Ahhaha
$100 & I take the risk 🤣
I’m a young mechanic and still work on old stuff and use this type of machine. I’ve been looking for a big one like this. I have plenty of the smaller ones. And I own a Classic Volkswagen Beetle as well so that was cool getting too see two things I love in the video.
@@KimiChanJapan thanks. I’m in Virginia otherwise I’d be interested.
Back in the day, folks tuned up their car twice a year with new plugs, points and condenser. Those big Sun Tune-Up Testers were the state of the art must have by all mechanics.
Iridium plugs weren't a thing back then?
No they didn’t, they did it whenever the weather changed since carburetors didn’t compensate for it. Also many engines had solid lifters, which require periodic maintenance….
Graduated auto mechanic course at Vo-Tech, 1974. My first job was line mechanic at a Datsun dealer, the shop had a Sun Tester like that. They were pretty handy, saved the mechanic a lot of diagnostic time.
Danny lowballed him 😂
danny isnt a dummy lol
@@ocbeachfishing i know but he lowballed rick from 600 to 100 lol 😂 😂😂
He is a professional low baller you should see his show
Danny has to frame it and takes all the risks. 🤣🤣
@@fakuridesne taste of his own medecine!
The tune-up tester is in insanely good condition. Didn't know it could turn the ignition off.
being able to turn off a cylinder...
It just cuts off the fuel and the engine stops because there’s nothing to create combination
@@rickharrison1887 Thanks, "Rick."
That thing is outdated.
I never saw one that clean 'back in the day' in any shop.
Even the chain shops...lol.
The Old Man roasting Rick makes me happy...RIP, Richard Benjamin Harrison Jr.
Lol weird I can see him doing it too rip to the old man ❤️❤️
Wow I had no idea that he passed. I’ve just started watching the show again after not watching it end of season 1. R.I.P Old Man Richard. 😔🙏🏼
Guys with classic cars would want this in their shop.
I would love to have it in my man cave/ garage. I wouldn’t really use it except to show it off but it’s a cool thing to have in the corner
No we don’t
No lol 😂
“It won’t fit through the front door”
Fits perfectly through the standard size back door…
Always a treat to see a vid with the old man in it. Rip to one of the greatest
Back in the late 70s and 80s, these Sun machines cost between $20-40k to buy brand new. There were different models from basic to super duper which explains the price range. That price isn't adjusted for today, they actually cost that much then. This is coming from someone who bought that exact machine brand new in 1977 and spent that much.
20k in 1975 was about $100,000 now, youre telling me you spent house money on one of these? Doubt
@@chaoswraith remember this is a boomer. they got paid actual gold every hour for working fast food or at a grocery store.
@@gabeitches8903 I am a Boomer, and that was hilarious!
@@chaoswraith back then opening a business required serious cash. every gas station you pulled into with a shop would have something like this dirty, covered in oil well into the 90s. I think in 1975 you could buy a house for less.
@@chaoswraith how do you know he didn't own a dealership or dyno tune shop he very well could have.
With vintage boats, motorcycles and cars, this piece of equipment is a must.
I'm shocked that cool machine is worth so little!,this would be a dream machine for people that collect and work on their classic cars.
It's cool but I wouldn't want it lol
No, no it wouldn't. It wasn't worth it to most people when it was new. Every function it has, you could do with a much cheaper tool and do it faster. It looks cool, so yeah in that regard a collector would want it sitting in their garage I guess, but these things were garbage gimmicks the day they rolled out the door.
I work on classic cars and I trained on a Sun Machine in school back in the 1980's. I would own one if I could find one for $100 or less. They take up a lot of real estate and every test they do can be done with much smaller tools. But the nostalgia of owning something I haven't used in 30 years would be cool. And these machines cost $8 grand or more new when a new car cost $8 grand so they were very expensive.
Its honestly kinda cool seeing how technology evolves
I love this show. I'm always learning something new
@CrazyDragonX7 have you never seen a documentary?
I am watching a Documentary on Frontiersmen right now, Daniel Boone, President Andrew Jackson. President Harrison, Davey Crockett, Kit Carson, and Senator Fremont. They did not teach us these people in school, and I am in my 60’s. For example: I never knew that President Jackson was truly one of the most evil men that ever lived in the United States!
@@TruthLivesNow yeah the stuff about Jackson only just started being taught in school. They didn’t include it until I was in high school, which wasn’t very long ago
Danny, above all people, should have known the true value. As he said, "it talks to older cars". The newer computer diagnostics equipment is worthless when you have nothing to plug into. Shops that specialize in vintage cars would have a great need for something like this. Danny obviously already has one and that's why he put the screws to Rick. But then, it was about time karma and Rick got together again.
Rick doesn't screw anyone. People are free to reject his offers if they don't like them.
But how many are there out there? The guy who brought it said he took it from a lot with a bunch of them on it. If every mechanic used to have it, and now only mechanics who work on classic cars have them, there'd be plenty.
All of the functions that a Sun Machine will do can also be done with much smaller tools that will actually fit in just one drawer of a tool box rather than take up more room than your average tool box. And how often do you think this machine would even be used? Once a day? No way, probably once a month, maybe twice in a really busy professional shop and maybe once every 3 years in a home shop. That's a lot of real estate taken up for something that never gets used.
There's a tool today called a pico scope that literally does this. It records every wave that you can go back and review. There is more to diagnostic that plugging into an obd2 port. You can still actually tap into and probe stuff just like they did in the past.
@@volf8586 Ah, this may be true, but how many of those very old machines still functioned as intended after all these years? Bet not all or even close to all.
You don't have to have one of these to work on old cars. We literally have scopes for this very purpose and they're lightyears better. You can go back and zoom in to any wave. The only thing is that it's cheap but it takes up a lot of space
When Danny pulled out the timing light that brought back memories. I cant remember the last time I changed a distributor cap never mind the light
Brings back memories of the days of tune up masters . Rick thought Danny had the word sucker written under his bandana.
More like the bandana covered his eyes.
@@gohjohan just a little
You can't pull the bandana over Danny's eyes.
Danny got a steal.
Jesus Christ! I’m so sorry to hear about your dad Rick. I just saw a news report on silver and the female interviewer brought it up. I was REALLY looking forward to coming to Vegas meet your Dad. He always made me laugh and I learned so much from him on Pawn Stars. May God be with you, Corey, and Chumlee during this time. I pray you all have good health, wealth, and happiness always. Thank you for all of the history you have preserved and taught to me and my wife. Once again, sorry for your loss Rick and hope to see you all in Vegas when I visit. Take care.
4:05 That's the first time I've seen the old man's eyes 👀😳. Didn't know he had any.
As a certified technician myself, there isn’t a scan tool/computer that exists that will tell you “bad coil on cylinder 7” like Rick says 😂
You'd be able to see it clear as day on any modern scope.
I think he's talking about misfire cylinder 7 which could be multiple things 🤣
At 2:50, it's a tough sell because I have to find a guy who still uses this machine. Good luck Rick.
This is fun to watch! Drinking with the Count? Rick scored…LOL!
That is what I was thinking. The bar tab for a few dudes in Vegas would go past $200.
I took auto mechanic in high school in the seventies, and we had one of these machines. Pretty cool at the time.
Rick trying to get as many drinks he can out of Danny...
Rick: $$30 drinks in, he's wasted lol
Danny: $100 for machine $30 in drinks ... win win
Corey literally said what I was thinking "haven't these been replaced by a laptop?"
whats odd is that smartphones were nothing like they are today back then and he he says i think these have been replaced by a smartphone which is true today though but not so much back then
its like he was forshadowing phone usage with testing and tuning of vehicles
Actually tablets
Used this machine in auto technical school Engine performance class. Worth at least $1000 because it’s functional
No way. Every thing a Sun Machine will do can be duplicated with much smaller tools that will all fit in one drawer of tool box instead of taking up more room than the average tool box. And how often do you think this machine would get used in an average shop? Or even in a shop that focuses on old cars? Maybe once a month or less. Ignition systems are relatively trouble free and most guys will grab a hand held vacuum gauge or timing light over hooking up this monstrosity. Yeah, it looks cool and old school but it's time was past 30 years ago. And I trained on these machines in the '80's as well. I haven't used one since the very early '90's.
@@1967davethewave yeah, gas/service station I worked at as a kid in late 80’s had on of these. Only thing it was good for even then was collecting dust and getting in the way.
Why do people like you feel the need to make things up?
Lmao.. "100 bucks and I'll buy the drinks!"
I used that same machine in the 80s at an Amoco service station.
We had the same one in my high school auto shop. I feel old now. lol
Danny looked so disgusted! Lol
5:00
You were considered a 'car god' if you had a Sun Tune-up Tester back in the day.
I used one of those for years, great units when you know how to read them...
I bought this exact scope years ago for my vintage cars. Almost had to pay to have it hauled away when I moved. There are systems that are 10-20 years newer that do the same things better and take up 1/10 of the space.
I think the seller being as proficient and knowledgeable he was with that machine really helped him secure the deal. That definitely seemed to leave a good impression on Rick in the moment (and even Corey to a lesser extent). The seller really seemed to open Rick’s imagination with the item despite its glaring issue of its ability to be re-sold.
‘Danny needs to use it’
Danny- 😂
Glad to see the old man is back
This was a good one actually. I would have thought Danny would have paid the $500 - something as a museum piece for his shop.
Danny took off his hands and is buying drinks and no one is going to help him load it in his truck. lol That's cold!
drinks in Vegas, you won by a lot
I notice a major part of the cooling system is missing in that engine bay.
Rear tinware is important, as well as the rubber engine bay seal.
Honestly if you restore older cars (or anything pre-1996 when OBD ports were introduced) I bet this is super handy to have in your shop. Seems well worth the asking price.
I need one
I love how in the title the word BACKFIRES is all capitalized further taking a jab at ricks blunder😆
“I’m not sure what this guy has but I’m a car guy”
rick really prayed on his son’s downfall just so people would forget this happened
Duh! It wasn't much of a loss!!! Dag! You sound just like them!
I would pay $600 for it and I have multiple oscilloscopes that fir in your hand. I used those when I was a young mechanic and that one looks like it never got used. They could have sold it easy for $600 just for a display in a shop
"I have a storage place in the back." Don't you mean WE have a storage place? It's yours, Corey?
I am amazed at the product eventhough i do not know exactly what it does. Can you time the point where each cylinder fires or does it already do that?
I have one of them be surprised how many old cars I've tuned up with that.
Yeah 0
I need one
Did he? After all Danny's done. That's desperado.
I remember using those in auto shop class
You win SOME you Loose SOME.
It would sell. Does it have an exhaust gas analyzer?
Danny's gonna roll it over to the pawn star dumpster and Chuck it! 😃
Rick buys the drinks!
In Vegas!
That's $200 right there.
I was trained on this thing.. And they still use them on OBD1 cars and older..
And that thing cost $10,000.00 New.....And look at it.. It still works....
Hey Rick if Correy gets under your skin just say 3 magic words, "HOT AIR BALLOON"
Apparently he is a car guy 🙄 but his dad knows everything about the cars
Rick got a taste of his own medicine
Feel like that would look cool in some oldscool cats shop in a small town. Idk the coolness level alone seems worth more then that. Lol
Well the old mechanic is happy. He probably got it for $25 😂😂😂😂
Maybe even free since it was a school who was probably going to throw them out
Dude for 100 id buy that its dope
Any video with the old man frustratingly putting his hand to forehead is an automatic like.
It’s not easy today either. It’s far harder today. Far more complexity in a car.
Okay, so when your old cars mess up, you know who to go to....
I have one my dad taught me how to use it back in the 70s if you're working on an old car still comes in very handy I wouldn't sell mine for that and your laptop won't do you any good on an old car
lmaaao buy the drinks tonight, small business 101
Rip old man. You were a legend!
You know he just didn’t want have to take it back home with him lmfao
That thing is great!
Lots of old school Motörhead’s will want it!
Word has it Danny's forehead never ends
Wheres the diagnostic port on a '69 Mustang?
Had one in auto class in HS in 1991.
Danny still uses that Sun Tuneup Tester
:11 notice how he stutters at the word storage. In his brain im sure he was going to say "I got a buddy, he knows all about these things"
I would drink at least $180 worth of liquor that night just so I can.sleep with a Conscience!! 🤣🤣
I could use one of these myself.
Thing is you can't plug the new laptop/mobile testers into old pre chip cars.
Jay Leno is perfect for this
When i take my classic car to a tuners they always plug it into one of these first to check all the plugs and that its running correctly
The Sun tester tells you if there's a bad plug wire or wires. I used one at work many years ago. Pretty handy machine.
A Yugo….. lol!! 🚗
Great editing to make you think 275 mattered.
Rick flew to Italy and spent $10,000 on a book for his personal collection.
around here you would be lucky to get this for $1000.00 and not working.
the demand is for decorations in man caves, it just has to look good and it'll sell for more as a decoration than what it will sell for as a useable tool.
Old tools and equipment is usually too expensive to buy to use locally. It is cheaper to buy on ebay around the world and ship it home to use.
Big question is huge knowledge
When I was a kid my father's car dealership had one which I inherited. It would have been cool to keep if I had the room. Could have taken out the oscilloscope and put a computer monitor or tv in there.
Does someone also realize that Everytime Rick or Corey shakes hands with someone they never look them in the Eyes 👀
Way too scripted, this is worth a lot more than $275, even as just a decoration for a garage/shop it’s worth $500!
I am totally shocked that someone thinks "Pawn Stars" is scripted. Seriously though, one word that doesn't describe this show is reality.
I'm a professional mechanic that trained on these machines back in the 1980's. They aren't worth anything. Literally every function they can do can also be done by tools that take up way less space, and I mean one drawer on a tool box as opposed to twice the real estate of a tool box. I don't know about you but every shop I have worked in or owned was always cramped for space. Not to mention it takes way more time to move this huge machine into place, hook it up and use it when hand held tools like vacuum gauges, timing lights and compression testers can be used individually in a matter of a minute or two no matter where the car is parked. $100 is a generous offer for this. But if you're willing to pay $500 I have 10 of them to sell you.
It's a neat piece of history and I could appreciate a RUclips video about one...but in the same way I'd appreciate a video on a steam engine.
Cool to look at and learn about, I just don't want to own it.
Back in the day it was needed but that was then
2:58 He is absolutely repulsed by that offer
This guy would be a good friend to have
Hahaha did he say small business owner 🤣
Replaced by code scanners! I’d give him a $1000.00
Seriously? I have 10 I'd like to sell you then.
We just call them sun machines...I learned on one of these...
Yugo was 4k saw commercial yesterday
An antique, not a tool.
I think it would be useful on classic cars
