The oscilloscope pattern was out of sync due to no trigger (red inductive pick-up not connected to #1 ignition wire). The chrome coil pick-up measures ignition activity. The cylinder selector designates number of cylinders but the sync. or trigger signal is required to separate and display the firing order sequence. I sold, serviced and trained SUN Electric Equipment from 1979 through 1992 when they were acquired by Snap-on. The Engine Performance Tester is a model 1160 and the Distributor Tester is a DT404.
Sounds like you know a lot about these vintage engine scopes. I have a "Marquette Dynavision Engine Analyzer 1000", I use it every now and then just to parade the cylinders; wish I knew more about it.
@@colinlomax5653 Well, I worked for SUN in the early 1980's, so here goes. You are probably going to have to take the front face off (not sure which machine and which instrument). Take a photo and post. However, there are companies that can make you the piece. Here in Corpus Christi we have A&B Plastics, and if you sent it to them (call first) and talk to Mark the owner. They can make it for you. You don't have to use glass. they can cut it out of clear plastic (the type they use in stores and restaurants because of COVID, and that will work the same and BTW, won't break. Which one do you have?
@@mikemalloy1681 I have a 1969 Sun 1020 that my dad bought in 1979. It has some issues, some of the features don't work. The main one is the ignition coil test feature. The picture tube works fine, and it has a pretty low use tube in it, problem is when you go to test the secondary ignition, I just get a flat line 0kv on the test, it used to work great. If I make an arc from the secondary test lead to the coil and turn the knob the coils all spark like mad, but no reading on the picture tube. Actually, most of the features on it don't work other than the condenser and ohm test anymore. Any ideas?

Good old fashioned analog, and the lead singer and guitar player of Boston till this very day records, plays, and enjoys tuning his analog equipment and his words were, 'I will bet if you don't see me doing it and listened to my music, you are not going to be able to tell the difference between the digital and analog recordings." He said that he can fine tune it just as good if not better depending on what he is using and doing in the studio. I know that it is not car related but in the day we only had analog equipment and if you didn't know how to use it, you didn't get the job done without it. Great evening and enjoy your day tomorrow. You can also display all the cylinders on that screen if he knew what he was doing. You can also cancel out cylinders determine which one is missing or misfiring
Actually, the guy in the video does NOT know how to properly use the scope as was the case with many mechanics. HOWEVRR, had he placed the trigger cable around the #1 plug, his signal would sync and not float across the screen, plus he could go to the raster mode and spread out all 4, 6 or 8 cylinders depending. A tech who knew what hE was doing could quickly find a specific bad wire, plug or see if there was a coil, Contact, condenser/capacitor or plug problem and solve problems quickly. I was the manager of the service department in SC for a few years and I repaired this equipment which came in from all over the state., Sun made great stuff and again, if the mechanic knew what he was doing, he could use this equipment to quickly find and fix faults. In my experience, maybe 30% or less of the service centers which had Sun equipment knew how to Fully use it.
Those are some really nice units in fantastic condition. Most are worn out, rusty and have little paint left. I've been looking for a nice old scope like that for a long time.

Used same Sun tester long time ago was sure you could get HT on scope . Very useful as spark voltages gave good indication of mechanical state of top end ie cylinder pressure effect spark.
I have a sun engine tester it still works that's what I learned on when I started working in my dad's shop don't use it much anymore.. you can do a lot with it... now I use a handheld for the new car's
That conical drive is very similar to the variable drive in a snowblower. A snowblower uses a flat disc instead of a cone but the principle is the same.
A lot of these early machines with their valve and cap driven electronics had features not found on the later PC driven analysers such as cylinder leakdown and compression .Cylinder comparisons are on the newer machines with digital screens instead of the CRT type scopes but stil do the same jobs, i have six different ones here which mostly all work. The plastic dials on the distributor machine can be kept accurate by spraying antistatic fluid on the fronts so the needles move easily. A little electrical engineering can see coil on plug ignitions tested too.

Nice work I have a question which Sun product was used for testing the smog... the machine in question has like an exhaust gas analyzer for sure and possibly a wire piercing probe attachment. The one I used had a really old computer attached to it it had to warm up

I used to work for Sun, and sold their engine analizers. They were sure good equipment. I am glad to see that some are still operational.
