Cinematographer Robert Richardson Breaks Down His Career, from 'Kill Bill' to 'The Hateful Eight'
I love how he spent decades of his career working with directors like Scorsese, Tarantino, Oliver Stone, and then signs up as a cinematographer for Venom 2
You take what you can, he's jot at a position to be choosing jobs as he said here
its being directed by Serkis
It kills me. There was a time when you could still have stories that didnt involve men running around in capes and skin tight leather
You gotta pay your bills.
He was gonna shoot Affleck's Batman film, still would love to have seen that.
Platoon, Wall Street, Born on the Fourth of July, The Doors, JFK, A Few Good Men, Casino, Kill Bill, The Aviator, Shutter Island, Hugo, The Hateful Eight, & Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. What a killer career!
I can't believe they skipped wall street here. Or a few good men. Just goes to show how epic his career is.
Yes. We need more about directors and writers and cinematographers
Rob Richardson and Roger Deakins are two of the greatest cinematographers ever.
the shape of that room is giving me anxiety
Lol probably some weird, renovated attic
How’d they install that floor with that weirdo corner?!? Anxiety is right.
That's exactly the kind of room I would expect to encounter a cinematographer.
Good, deal with it for once
@@Diamond_tip lame comment
It's interesting to see that because these new videos in quarantine are recorded by the interviewee themselves, this genius cinematographer even paid quite a lot of attention how to frame himself. Look at the scene and its perspective.
Yeah ok eric
Exactly. Even the natural window lighting is used effectively. Quit the contrast to a lot of other videos.
@@shanekimberlin That's how we recognize a cinematography master
@@rashedsaied chill
Interestingly, the shape of his room and the way the shot is framed fills me with anxiety
Thanks for this interview. Robert Richardson is one of my favorite, if not THE favorite, directors of photography. I could listen to him talk for hours. JFK is a masterpiece. How I would love a commentary track by him, Pietro Scalia and Joe Hutshing.
I could listen to Robert talk about cinema all day.
This should of been at least an hour long so we could hear his stories about the other films he worked on.
Big Bad Bob Richardson. Legend. Period
Thank you vanity fair for supplying us with content on great cinematographers as well as famous actors. While they might not get as many views, you guys seem to know that the views these videos do get are worth it to the people fascinated on the subject
A ROBERT RICHARDSON BREAKDOWN!? Amazing!! One of the coolest interviews of him on the net.
I could sit and listen to his anecdotes all day!
I would love to see Emmanuel Lubezki breaking down his career.
That background alone tells you everything you need to know about this legend. Great video!
The cinematography & editing in JFK are masterful
I feel like Robert Richardson gives great hugs.
Master of storytelling. Its great to hear about him and Quentin reading scripts together. I'm sure Robert has bts stories VF can't air, lol
Wow crazy timing! Just binge-watched interviews on Once Upon a Time in Hollywood today. He's very lucky with all the great films he's worked with. And to shoot a film, freezing with broken back, that's just badass.
Casino is one of my favourite films of all time. So good. This guy is a legend.
More of these please. They're excellent, especially for us aspiring young filmmakers.
Yay. I was waiting for this. Loved the video guys ❤️
You must have played it in 300% speed lol
Great! Now get Roger Deakins
Listened to his podcast? Definately worth your time!
Biringvad where can you listen? I can’t find it on RUclips
@@Neat0_o Spotify. Maybe on their website too.
That's who I thought this was about...
I'd say he's done alright, being a go-to for Oliver Stone, Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino. You know, just a few projects here and there.
How about John Williams? He composed the music that that's been the background of our lives for fifty years.
Agh they skip past my two favorite Scorsese/Richardson collaborations, Bringing Out the Dead & Shutter Island! AGH!
Wow this the best interview that i ever watched here
This is fantastic!!!!! Thank you Robert Richardson and VF!
Wow! This guy has worked with the best in the business and I’ve never heard of him, nor did I know he was the dude behind the camera. What an excellent/fortunate life and career.
His Tarantino impression is really good. I can imagine him sitting on the couch, watching a 70s flick, all mellow, never once looking at Bob and just saying: You’ll get it later. Bet he got a kick outta saying that
He’s such a legend, the room he’s in has leading lines 🙌🏾
I love his cinematography and glad he's such a down to earth guy!
Robert Richardson is one of the most underrated cinematographers in the game.
I was today years old when I realized this man DPd most of the movies in my top 10 favorites list..
What a chill unpretentious dude, love it :)
Yes! More filmmaker & cinematographer content!
Awesome! Hope you can get more cinematographers on this!
Casino is incredibly well photographed.
Great video. I wish there was some emphasis on Snow Falling On Cedars, a wonderfully made film he photographed.
Bob is a genius ....there is no other career that matches his!
you would be surprised
jamal karshe deakins?
MovieBuff not just him there’s also Conrad hall just look at his filmography
True Fact Robert Richardson is friends with one of my Teachers in High School and when she told me I got excited
Very endearing person and a prolific one. Remarkable career. Any time I notice Bob as DP for an upcoming film, the film just has that much more pedigree
What an amazing treat! Marvelous!!
From Kill Bill from Hatful eight. That’s like less than a third of his carrier.
I don’t know if he ever served as a carrier, but his career has been awesome. Agreed!
You're the 1st comment btw
Great Cinematographer, even better personality!
what an interview! thanks
couldnt have clicked faster....more of these please!!!
Totally skipped Bringing out the dead, one of the most interestingly shot films Richardson has done.
Agreed! Easily my favorite looking Scorsese film he shot. Best use of his trademark hot spotlight effect ever I felt. And that color palette of emphasizing red, white & black in particular, so haunting. Also the various ways they photograph the ambulance racing down the street, seared in my brain forever. Especially when scored to The Clash, Van Morrison, etc.
Carnola Sluggs I need to watch it again! Such a good one!
@@carnolasluggs5417 But you already heard here that he only does lighting in Scorsese films not with his own ideas
So cool to see people agree on this; i was in awe first time i saw it.
This is fantastic
I love finding out about talented people named Robert xD.
I wanna hear him talk about django and inglorious Bastards
Why is his "Quentin voice" deep? Quentin sounds nothing like that 😂
I know right.
Oh I guess you mean on the Once Upon a Time segment :P
Maybe he talks like that in private haha
Bob is a legend.
A legend of Cinema!!!
The illusion of that back wall...it tracks that a cinematographer would choose such a room.
Absolutely delightful!!
Best eye in the business.
Dude is so chilled
that was wonderful, what a cool guy!
Man i thought he was about to say that he suggested the continuous shot in Casino but that story took a hard left turn.
You won't even know Johnny Depp was in the movie 😁✌️
My second favorite cinematography behind roger deakins.
Is there a reason Bob’s profanity was bleeped, but not the clips?
Platoon is the greatest war film of all time. Been a huge fan since Oliver Stone.
Apocalypse Now would like a word with you
I wish he had talked bout Shutter Island
Can someone tell me what hoodie he's wearing, please? 👀
Please!
Zachary Borrelli KAPITAL SURF HOODIE
Heard a lot about Bob Richardson, but never met him, not even on NBK.
this is great, more of this
Wait a minute, this guy shot JFK AND Casino?
You have my attention, sir.
😂
Haha, anyone who saw Inglorious Basterds could have predicted the ending of "Once Upon a Time..."
I was just watching 'JFK' an hour ago.
Most underrated cinematographer working today.
Nah, in the industry Bob is in the top rated. There’s heaps of cinematographers just as good that don’t get as much praise as Bob does. My best friend knows some people that worked with him on Django and Hateful 8.
I never knew John Lennon would return to the mortal world and give us cinematography tips
😂
I would say RR is the cinematography equivalent of JL, but that underrates him.
Waiting for Venom 2 to visit Rob's Masterpiece. 🔥🔥
One of the greatest.
what an amazing person!!
Can not wait to watch his debut superhero film with Venom 2 😍🎥
can you pleaseeeee get Christopher Doyle
(Edit)
or please resurrect Sven nykvest
There's a requirement that you have to have a magnificent head of white hair to be a legendary camera man.
This guy is awesome
he was great at hateful eight
Hoyte van Hoytema please
Call him up
Emmanuel Lubezki when?
Santa quits delivering gifts to be a cinematographer. Brilliant.
I love this man
This man is obviously a wizard behind the lens. All he needs is a hat and staff.
Awesome
Hes like Gandalf inna hobbit house
Mans got drip 4 days thats respect
I could listen to this man speak for 3 hours
I love his Oliver Stone stories and collaboration. Why don’t they talk anymore? Bob seems sad about it.
Yeah they had a ‘painful divorce’ as Oliver called it in an interview a while ago
“JFK” at 5:08
Legend!!!
For sure! congrats on being first to comment btw 😉
Waited so much for this lol
Didn't Bob do Natural Born Killers and U-Turn too
the greatest!
Didnt know Venom 2 will be on that list, cant wait!
Anybody trying to figure out the room he’s in
The way they skipped over inglorious basderds
GOAT BIG BOB
Good Tube
Did I just watch JFK's head get pulped in a Vanity Fair video?
Ive never been sooooo early
