  • Gregor Townsend has opted for a familiar feel as Scotland hunt down their first Six Nations Championship since 1999... With other teams calling the next generation, do Scotland have an advantage?

As an Ireland fan, I feel that Scotland have progressed a lot under Gregor Townsend and they are in a much better place than they were before he was in charge. The last 2 RWCs were not a fair reflection of how good they are.
They have some really talented players with loads of flair. But it must be so frustrating for them that they don't win any silverware at the end of it all. Maybe they lack a little in terms of consistency. They have a chance this year if they can start performing more consistently

We'll never win consistantly until we can get a real youth system set up. We need good youngsters coming through to keep the main players trying to improve, and just to provide better depth.

Really solid breakdown thank you very much, nice to see an informed analysis of the squad :)

Scotland have some wonderfully talented players, and when they are on song, and have a lot front-foot ball they are a joy to watch. But I think old frailties may persist. The forwards may lack the physicality and the ‘dog’ factor when it comes to playing teams like Ireland and France. With the forwards on the back foot, the backs lack the quick ball they need, and things start to unravel. And sometimes I think we (Scotland) sometimes just don’t have enough inner confidence that teams need to win those hard-slog matches.

The main Glasgow centre partnership this season has been Tuipulotu and McDowall with Huw Jones on the wing so wouldn't be surprised to see them line up together.

Jones quick as bro do it every game apart from Ireland so we can get out 50 point win

It’s mainly due to injuries that Huw is out on the wing, before that the first choice partnership was by far Sione at 12 with Huw at 13. I doubt Huw will play wing for Scotland, he’ll either start at 13 or be on the bench to cover centre and maybe 15 at a push. Unfortunately for McDowall, I doubt he plays any games to be honest.

@@lewisjames19 I wouldn't say Huwipulotu was "by far" the main partnership. They're the one everyone remembers but even last season McDowall was getting plenty of starts and has even been named Captain a few times. Agree he probably won't start for Scotland but Smith really seems to rate him and he's been pretty decent.

Gutted for Hastings, he's picked up another knee injury and might miss out again.

Townsend is far from one of our most successful coaches! Probably the best group of players in the professional era and the highest we have finished in the 6 nations is 3rd and we went out in the pool stages in two world cups. That isn't success. Entertaining rugby has been a nice change, but we haven't even been close to successful under Townsend.
We have to target a win in the first game, if we get that then the tournament opens right up for us. If we lose that game then we'll be looking to the wooden spoon play off against Italy sadly.

We have a settled team with a few new players coming through, we won't win the 6 nations but we will run some teams close

As good as the Mish is, he's not quite at the level he was at before the last Lions tour. As a 7, Rory Darge is now the better player (though he is possibly still going to be injured by the start of the 6N so the balance will be interesting to see. Shame Magnus Bradbury (who's tearing it up at Bristol now) still isn't being picked. Maybe he and Toony had a falling out.

Huwipolotu is such a class pair

We simply need more grunt up front. It’s not too many players either. I think tight head is a bit weak but the main weakness is second row. That’s where our biggest difference lies between us and the top teams. They have monstrous aggressive ball carrying locks with great skills. Richie Gray is ok, Sam Skinner is versatile and has good hands but we lack aggression in the second row.
Most other positions we have world class players but they are starved of quality ball when we play really abrasive teams like South Africa and Ireland.

So the reason Townsend has started to phase Mish out is apparently because he can only play 7, Christie, Crosbie and Bayliss all can play across the back row. I personally don’t agree and can’t agree with dropping Mish but that’s the reason he gave in the squad interview

They have more chance of winning a haggis competition. They have never won a six nations, the last time they won5 nations was 1999. They have only ever reached 4th in the RWC once in 1991. They usually go outvin the pool stages. They havevonly ever won 3 Grandslams, the last in 1990. They have ever only won 7 titles ( if you combine home nations, 5 nations and 6 nations). The leaders are the Welsh with 28 followed by France 25, England 24 and Ireland 12. The Scots are also second for the wooden spoon with 24, Behind ireland with 25, England 19, Wales 17, france 13. Italy has 16, but thats just in the six nations. Facts dont lie. The scots will be optimistic though as they alwsys are. They genuinely do have a good side, but need the rub of the greeen.
