  • In this video i show you how to upgrade your old macbook pro that might be getting slow or having storage problems. I show you how to mount a second hard drive (HDD) or solid state drive (SSD) by replacing it with the optical drive (CD/DVD drive). What you will need for this is the following:
    Caddy:

    SSD:

The top left and bottom left screws holding in the optical drive (which describe at 3:30 and 3:32) are incredibly tight, maybe seized. Do you have any recommendations for how loosen them without stripping the screw heads?

Can this be done on a 13" late 2012 mac with retina?

What benefits would 2 ssd bring as opposed to 1 ssd and 1 hdd ? As the startup would run off the ssd and the hd for the extra disk space.

Followed this to the letter, including the same caddy, and the back won’t close. The caddy is about 1mm thicker than the optical drive. Any suggestions?

Are you able to do a fresh install of the latest OS on the SSD in that space?

Yes. I did that. I am now running a fresh OS X Yosemite on the SSD and have done all the storage on the HDD. So only the absolute necessary are on the SSD. Most programs can be run directly from the HDD even though your OS is on the SSD. Good luck with the modification. :-)

great video! Are using the SSD as a master (boot) disk or slave? Would you have even more speed if you installed the SSD at the HDD slot instead of the super-drive slot? Thanks!!!

+KONSTANTINOS VATHAKOS Yes i am running the OS on the SSD as the master and the standard HDD as the slave. I am actually uncertain if there is any limitation regarding the read/write speed on the optical drive. If there is, it would make more sense to switch them around, but for the moment i am quite happy with the improved speed of the current setup. Hope this answers your question to some extent :-)

Dont you need to boot the hdd? or you just put an empty drive in there? and after it's installed... Everything works, or you gotta do some sort of set ups?

Could someone help me? I made the instalation, everything is fine. I just need to know how to effective clean the original HDD to use it as storage, and I can't find the solution.

Open disk utility, select the original HDD, and format (erase) it as APFS if you’re running High Sierra or newer, or Mac Extended Journal if you’re running Sierra or older.
