Great stuff Dan.. Really descriptive and helpful video!
Just what I was looking for, great video!
Thanks.
Hi Dan
Thanks for putting this together - really useful. Wish me luck when I do mine in a couple of days.
David Hassall Hey, no problem. It is a simple process, you should do fine. If you have any issues feel free to ask.
Thanks, Great tutorial, this is exactly what i needed. Your Rock!!!
Could not have asked for a better delineation of this process. Thanks so much for your work!
No problem glad you found it easy to follow
Great video! If I do one ssd and one hdd, is there any preference for better performance in regards to which one I choose to put where the optical drive used to be or does it not matter?
This is great, seems simple enough to do! Going to be doing this in the next few weeks. I have an external hard drive that I want to swap with the optical drive. Will I have to reformat the hard drive, if it's already working as an external? Thanks again for posting it, I'm subscribing
One of the best video. Great steps, great follow up. Thanks to take your time
Thanks glad it was useful
Hi! Do I still need a caddy to move my HDD to my optical drive (for size compatibility)? I'm planning to install an SSD, too. Great video btw.
did not know you could do this, awesome!
congrats for your 20k subs!
Oh wow! Thanks, I didn't even notice I hit it. Time to do a giveaway I think.
Thanx a lot. I updated my 13" 2009 no problems. Really direct and easy to understand. Great work! FYI I brought the caddy for $13 Au delivered eBay.
Johnee Utah Nice, glad to help!
for a macbook early 2011, do I need the 9,5 or the 12,7 caddy?
Excellent video.. Thank you..
this video is amazing.... thank you!
No problem, glad you liked it.
Will a harvested 4tb Lacie hard drive be supported on Macbook Pro 13" 2011 model ?
does this increase battery consumption by alot since 2 HD are now running or is it negligible
Hey Dan, I'm thinking of doing the same setup like yours.... Put the SSD in the primary bag of hdd and the original hdd in the caddy for optical drive... Did u have any problems with this setup?
I've seen posts about this setup not being a suitable one.... Or does it matte where the SSD is and the hdd
Whats the size of cady should i use on my 15 inch? 9.5mm or the 12.7mm?
Thank you. Very nice and clear!
You're welcome, glad found it useful!:)
Is there a capacity limit for the 2nd Drive? Thanks
If I swap my optical drive to allow my macbook to hold both a SSD and a HDD drive, is it still possible to partition to install windows??
is the process the same for the late 2011 macbook ?
hey Dan i want to buy a SSD and swap it out using your method, but after it's installed how do i use the new SSD to boot up my OS X operating system, and to open up programs? Well basically i just want to just the 500 GB HDD on my my macbook pro as a storage file. I have a 2011 early 2015 btw. Do you have a video explaining what i'm trying to do?
How would I go about moving my hard drive into the optical bay, putting an SSD where the hard drive was and use it as the boot drive but keep all my files on the hard drive in the optical bay? Would I have to erase OSX from the HDD since the SSD will have it on it as well? I know it would be much easier if I cloned the HHD contents to the SSD but I want the SSD to be bare bones.
Hi in 2024. Can we install the os in this and directly boot it makinh it into a default boot disk without always doing it manually.
hi, can i install os on hd that replace a superdrive? I' ve a macbook pro mid 2010.
Great tutorial !!!!!!
Thanks
okay what if u eject it ? then do i need to open and reconnect the lines oh the hdd.
great job sharing
Thanks!
Thanks this helped
Excellent. Thank you.
Thanks glad to help
Very helpful. Thanks!
Your link is wrong. I bought a 12,7mm caddy instead of a 9,5mm which won't fit my MacBook.
Please change to prevent further confusion.
What is the point of optical hard drive, if i replace both and both are 250gb do i now have 500gb together? Should i replace both or just optical hard drive?
what a effort, very helpful.
Thanks glad to help
Hey. Can I install Windows on the 2nd hdd
Mac (early 11") only running slightly faster after these upgrades I am using a 480GB ADATA mainly as a boot drive. Is there something else I could do? The computer handles everything just fine, but after upgrading RAM and both drives (second 1TBSSHD) I was expecting a whole lot more performance.
When I have the second hard drive, can I install Windows 8.1 on it? Because I want two systems on my Macbook. I have an installer CD for Win8.1.
Muchas gracias, muy util. En mi caso instale un SSD y el mac va mejor que nuevo. Un abrazo desde Colombia.
Hello there, Thanks for your awesome tutorial. It's a great video. Question: Can we make the CD drive HDD function as a primary boot option to run Mac os ?
No problem. I want to say you can but I haven’t tested it. Best thing is to lookup on google and see if you find multiple people who have done it successfully.
can i install 4TB hdd ,maximum 9mm right?
Great video, now i dare to do it :-) Regards from Denmark...
Henrik Lauritz Glad you liked it!
Great work.
Thanks
Great video! Question: I have the iOS install and running smoothly. If I remove this ssd 2.5” and use it as an external ssd drive on my newer MacBook Air 11 inch with better video card will that work as another iOS drive? My video card on my 2010 MacBook Pro is bad.
Thanks, if you have an enclosure to put the SSD in then it would work as an external hard drive as far as I know. I am not sure I understand the question exactly though.
Hi Dan, Can I ask how do you move your files on your bootdrive SSD to HDD? Do you just drag and drop to the 'Macintosh HDD' under the device column?
And how do you open those files that you have moved to HDD while booting from SSD? Do you have to restart to boot from HDD to open it?
Does it work the same round from HDD to SSD too? As I only have a 250GB SSD and a 500GB HDD from Apple, I am planning to boot it from HDD and copy only important files to SSD. Please help me!
Amazing video
Thanks
Does any one knows if you can boot from that new ssd ?
Thanks so much for your help. Transferred my original Apple HDD to the Optical Drive and put a SSD in it's place. Now I have to figure out how to install OS X on the SSD and make it my boot drive.
+yezzzir5 You're welcome!
is it better to put a ssd in the optical drive or the orginal hdd in the optical drive and the ssd in the hdd place? Please let me know. thanks!
also how did you make it your boot drive, did it work?
I"m not an expert, but I would put the SSD in the original slot and make it my primary drive and use your old hard drive as your secondary storage. I guess it doesn't matter and you can choose which one is your start up drive but i'm not 100% sure. I would definitely want the ssd to be my start up though.@@Stoney-Jacksman
Nnnnnnooooooooo!!!! Now I have to wait for the optical drive enclosure video. He made this so easy to understand 👌
Aideen Wolfe Sorry about that. I am going to post that video asap. I kinds let it get away from me. Glad you found this video helpful.
Thanks for posting the vid(s)
Aideen Wolfe Your welcome.
THANK U
Great video, but I have a situation here I don't know if you already saw something like this. I bought a used MacBook Pro with only onde ssd instaled with caddy on cd slot. the previous owner had the originar cd drive with him and gave to me. so I try to put it back, the optical drive where he belongs, and de ssd HD where he belongs also. but when I do that the Mac do not inicialize... I never had a Mac before, and on a regular pc I would change de boot sequence. When start with the chime I press de option key and show only the optical drive.
Not sure to be honest. Is the main drive functional?
So did that StarTech enclosure work out? I would like to be able to use the cd/dvd drive if ever need it…
Yeah works great I still use it now from time to time and it’s I don’t even know how many years old now lol.
You can unconnected that skinny wire so it's not in the way. It's the wifi Bluetooth connection.
Cool
Optical Drive SSD make it faster tho?
Great video tips, let me go insert my another HD
Glad to help!
quick question buddy, when you are not looking in hd or the files that are in it. does it still keep spinning.. just wondering if it is going to kill my battery life?
For anyone else wondering. Not it wil not
What exactly is the model of your Macbook Pro? (For instance, mine is a Mid 2012, 13 inch) And does that make a difference with the caddy?
Simon Root The caddy should be pretty standard for models like mine. It is a 15-inch, Mid 2012 but if you own a MacBook Pro with the previous design or the newer retina MacBook Pros then this wont really work.
Very, very good and clear tutorial. I used it to get through the installation process BUT the link for the caddy is not the one you are using (perhaps it's a different model). I bought the one you linked to and when I installed, it was too thick, the MacBook case couldn't close, it also did not have the two outer screw holes to secure the outer side to the MacBook (so it could only be secured by the bracket that is transferred from the optical drive). The caddy linked to is "CJESLNA SATA 2nd HDD caddy for 12.7mm Universal CD/DVD-ROM" but I suspect that a 9.5mm caddy is what is needed. Sadly I have to await an international order for several more weeks to get another caddy before I can install my new SSD.
Sorry, they must have changed the product from when i first linked it.
DHTV - Dan I suspect that’s the case. Am I correct in my assumption that the caddy must be 9mm?
Great video. If I did this, what would be the next process if I wanted to use the new SSD as the boot drive and also hold apps such as Photoshop, Final Cut Pro and Illustrator? How do I go about making the SSD primary and the current HDD secondary storage? I want my creative programs to open and run smoothly and quickly. Thanks.
+Alex Cook Rather then try to explain it all here I am planning on doing this myself. I will just make the video for you. If you can't wait for it, you can search Google and you should be able to get the instructions.
+DHTV - Dan That would be great man, thank you so much. I will probably order the items the next day or two but not install for a few more days. I appreciate it.
Alex Cook I actually have an older video on how to install Mountain Lion. It is similar though ruclips.net/video/eK3a2fZt18o/видео.html Just incase I don't get to the video.
+DHTV - Dan Thanks. Just ordered the kit yesterday. I'll probably do the install next weekend.
I think you pulled off the wrong connector when you are supposed to pull out the one that connects the battery to board
Great Video , How we can switch from to run Mac OS on SSD ?
Gon Nguyen You would have to do a clean install of the OS and then choose the SSD to run it.
What Dan says is incorrect, you can copy your OS by going to Disk Utilities> Restore. Drag and drop current startup disk (usually Macintosh HD) into 'source' and the new SSD into 'destination', hit 'restore' and let the magic happen. Once it's copied over you can free up the space on the old drive.
hey heads up you linked the 12.7mm caddy which i believe is wrong. I think the macbook needs the 9.5mm caddy
Just ran into this problem today on my MacBook Pro 2012... Better change the link
Just ran into this problem today on my MacBook Pro 2012... Better change the link
hi, which one should I buy for my mbp 2011 13 inch? thanks
hi great video! i have a question i just replaced my hard drive with a ssd but before i did that i cloned what i had in my hd to the ssd thinking im not going to need my hd anymore. now i want to have both drives and replace the optical drive but do i have to erase what i cloned in one of the drives??.
+veLAcity I did exactly what you did and when I replaced the optical with the original hard drive I deleted everything on it.
+DHTV - Dan how do i delete everything from the second hard drive?. is there a link?
veLAcity You would reformat it. I don't have a link unfortunately but you can find it on Google for sure.
Can I do this with an early 2011 17 inch macbook pro?
Mark Bobo I believe you can but you should look for a tutorial specific on that model just incase the process is different.
Some 2012 models are the same as late 2011 and in those you might need a 9.5mm caddy not a 12.7mm. I've just bought a 12.7 by mistake and it didn't fit. My machine is labelled mid 2012.
I have a mid 2012 15' model.. will i need the 12.7?
How do I do this but keep everything on my original hard drive? Will doing this affect my Logic Pro X sessions? Thank you
This is only for the old MacBooks.
@DHTV mine qualifies lol. It's an early 2011 MBP. Already wad updated when I got it to 8gb and 256 ssd. But I wanna do 16gb 1TB ssd and replace the optical drive with another SSD. I only use for Logic Pro X to make music. But I'm kinda confused about how to get Logic and the songs I've made to the new SSD
the link to the screwdrivers leads to just a general page....what brand of screwdrivers are those? i can't get my optical drive out.....i've already tried using two sets of phillips #00 for the opticaldrive and they didnt work..and i've possibly ruined the screws......but from your video it looks like i need the torc kind ....but what specific brand..i want to buy the exact brand so i know it will work..it looks like it says "iCAN" on the screwdriver but I can't find it online
Yeah they were ican but they don’t seem to have them on Amazon anymore.
I have a question. My mac is running 8gb ram and 1tb hardrive with i7 processor. my mac is pretty slow to start up so if i replace my disk drive with a 120gb ssd can i putt my opperating system on it? like make it my primary hardrive and use the 1tb original hard drive as storage ? basically what im asking is will it make my mac run faster? eg photoshop and start up?
ROW//\N DRA\\KE It will make it much faster. I switched to my SSD and it is lightning fast now. iMovie is slow to start though with Yosemite.
Hi Buddy, How can I install NVME drive in my MacBook Pro 2011
To be honest I’m not really sure. It’s been way too long since I used the older macs.
Is it better to put the hard drive in the optical drive and the SSD in the original spot?
Alec Watson I don't think it really matters.
One question, I read that the optical drive is only 3gbs of speed,
slower than the main bay that is 6gbs, install a second 2db hdd drive
and it works improperly is sata lll of 2tb, when trying to copy files to
that unit takes too much time, will it be because of the speed or
storage capacity of this second unit?
Macbook Pro 13´ Mid 2012
16 ram
240gb SSD
link of the article I read:
@t
To be honest I never read or seen anything regarding this. I tried to search it out but couldn't come up with a definitive answer. Sorry man.
Geo Villeneuve it’s right for 2011 MacBook 15 & 17 “
2.5 or 3.5?
I did exactly what you said and it says that my ssd is not mounted, took it all apart and redid every and got the same message, what can I do?
The connection must be bad. It worked for me.
What's the brand of your screw driver? I purchased one off of amazon and I tried to remove the optical drive screw and almost stripped it trying to remove it. The screw still hasn't come out and I'm thinking my screw driver sucks
***** Hopefully you didn't strip the screw. The ones I use aren't branded with any name.
2:24 - That's not the battery connector.
yea i see that lol
Hi Dan, quick question.
Can i still use the Optical Drive as an external device?
+San Gurung Yes, you can buy an external hard drive enclosure and then you just put it in. It will work via USB. That what I do actually.
Thanks, .. I never threw it away but it was just collecting dust. Now it will have some use. 👍🏻
San Gurung Thats exactly what mine was doing haha. Glad to help.
hi, I have a question, I have SSD and I want to install it on my laptop MacBook pro. so is it true if I will replace the HHD slot with SSD, and my HDD attached to the laptop I plug it into HDD Cady? does the HHD need to be blank first or backup first? are there any suggestions?
Anytime your moving hard drives around it's always good to back them up. In your case, you are switching your main hard drive to the new SSD so your old HHD is going to have all the boot files etc along with your files. If it was me, I would backup the HHD and format it to be just a storage drive. Leaving it as is will just cause issues and maybe even prevent you from accessing the files.
Hello DHTV - Dan
I have tried this and when i try to format the SSD which i attached in place of DVD Rom, it gives me an error like "Could not mount disk0s2 after erase file system formatter failed.
When i tried with exFAT its formatted and working fine .. but not with Mac OS Extended (journaled).. can you tell whats wrong here ?? i am kind a stuck over here.
please check the link for error i am having ..

Any help will be appreciated..
Thanks in advance..
will this slow down your macbook when the hard drive is filled?
+kgog1 No, you set it up so it's kind of like an external hard drive but in the computer. Everything runs of your main hard drive really.
does this affect the battery life at all?
+SDHSdrummer I haven't noticed anything different.
Just tried this out my Macbook pro 15 inch late 2011 needs a 9.5mm HDD caddy not a 12.7. Didn't fit. Just to let people know!
+DHTV I have a mid 2012 13" Pro. Is it possible to replace the cd player with a 2GB Hard Drive(since it's cheaper) and then the main drive with an SSD since it starts the laptop and moves faster?
2GB? I don't see why couldn't do that but get a drive with more then 2GB or it's almost pointless.
@@DHTV what higher internal GB do you recommend?
Christian Pien minimum 250 gb
Why does my caddy not fit? I literally bought the one you have linked
If it’s the one I have linked then it should fit a 15” mid 2012 model. Is that the MacBook Pro you have?
@@DHTV Yep, mid 2012 15 inch. I think the link needs to be updated. I bought it, put it in, and it was way too thick
what you do with the cd drive you have taken out.
Bought a USB enclosure and if I need it I just connect it via the USB
What do I do if I get stripped screws?
Try putting a rubber band between the screw and screw driver, kind of acts like a filler of sorts. Heard that life hack a bunch of times. Never used it myself though.
you didn't disconnect the correct tab for the battery
12.7mm or 9.5mm caddy?
+Wahyu HP. I got 9.5mm links in the video description.
Does this work for macbook air
Don’t think so.
Whats the diffidence between optical drive and a SSD drive?
Optical drive is your cd/dvd drive. It's called optical drive.
thanks
john vansalisbury No problem.
I think u can gently remove your camera cable. BTW nice video.
zafarershadow Thanks.
Why would you want to replace your optical drive for a SSD? Could someone please explain to me what are the benefits?
Optical is for DVDs which unless specifically needed isn't really useful (at least for me). Adding the SSD gives you a second drive which can be used to run the OS and programs much much faster then a standard hard drive. So the theory for this is to have the standard hard drive with larger space to store files and have the SSD to run programs and the operating system. (SSD is much quicker then standard hard drives)
My superdrive has died after 9 years. An external drive does the same job anyway. So adding an SSD as a replacement as well as replacing the old main HDD with an SSD will help the machine last a lot longer and work much faster. And you can stripe the drives for a raid configuration as well.
i made this in a late 2012 and dont see de new hdd
What do you mean?
When I put in my caddy and start to place the bottom cover back on, the cover lifts a little higher from where the caddy has been placed. Is this normal?
I have a MacBook Pro 2012 13inch
Tom Bachar Mine is pretty flush but if it is a bother to you, you could return the caddy and try a different one. In theory it should be flush.
yeah i did that and it was too much for the mac and with the flash bang op system apple insist on the thing died, great!!
Mines been working ever since, did you find out why it died on you?
DHTV - Dan the new op systems burn out macs. They’re not made for them. The fans can’t handle 2 drives. I had 1 1 tb and a 2 tb onboard. Being a 2011 didn’t help either graphics card prob
But if u buy a NEW expensive MacBook it won’t last either as new op systems will burn it out. They want you to buy 1 a year or max 2 years
Which operating system the latest or the ones prior? I’m using the previous version and it’s fine 2012 mode
DHTV - Dan the earlier the better but they don’t like time machine which is a useful prg
Don’t get the latest
That was not the battery commenter
That is the track pad cable
oh never well this isn't what I wanted
thats funny hhd did you meant hdd ..ha ha
Why would you replace your optical drive with SSD? What if you need to use a CD? Why would you get rid of that CD player feature. That’s stupid, why don’t you just use a 2t ssd on your regular hard drive holder. This is stupid though
Optical dives for me are near pointless. I took the optical drive and put it in an enclosure so if needed I can plug it up via USB. Also having the 2 drives works great for dedicating the OS and programs to one and storage to another. Also, when I made this videos SSDs were crazy expensive. Also I have set mine up as a failsafe as well to backup incase my primary drive fails. It's a toss up for the most part but I like it.
You "Go Ahead" too often. jees.
Way to go ahead and point that out. I had to listen to it over an over during edit, how you think I feel lol.
