    Sharper Image in the US is where I bought my first Tapio for about 60 bucks. My second is a Tapio Hackman which had no sheath for 175.00 on ebay. Ebay has them for 250 up to 475 US . The handle is like a squared off oval, rather comfortable to me, I have medium sized hands . If you look at the blade point on, you will see a diamond configuration with the bottom of the diamond making up most of the blade . The sides of the diamond make for a strong blade . This design is found in most older Finnish puukko's . A good example of this is the blade design for the 1969-72 Normark hunter by Fiskars . I have a number of these knives as well, which are and were overlooked by many . Most of my purchases were from Minnesota which has a high Finnish and Scandinavian population of hunters and fishermen ! Grizz 🐻

      Another rhombic knife. I should have checked that before I made the video. The high grind should have given me a clue. Thanks for all of the Info. Hey Grizz, I remember seeing a comment where you were asking about airports. I must have missed it when I was answering comments (I often check them on my lunch break, but answer them at home when I have time. The nearest International airport is Tromso but the easiest way to get here is to fly to Helsinki and to get a Finnair flight to one of the smaller airports. Enontekio, Kittila or Rovaniemi.
      I actually prefer the Tromso option as Tromso is by far my favourite city to visit (purely due to its location and surroundings).
      Planning on coming to Lapland? Would be great to see you here if so.

    I just found this video and I like the presentation. I ordered one of these knives out of a catalog in 1975 or 1976. I was so impressed with it when I got it that I ordered a second one. Absolutely wonderful knives. Shortly after I got them, they ended up in a lock box that I had and in time I lost the key. Fast forward to 2012, I found the key and unlocked the box. I now have a pair of knives in perfect condition with the sheaths. I never even had the need to take them to a sharpening stone. They have the original edge to them.

    • @KuukkeliBushcraft
      @KuukkeliBushcraft  2 года назад +1

      Wow that's amazing, finding the key after all that time. Mine unfortunately is pretty well used. I was looking for one for a long time as they are a pice of real puukko history. Very common over here but too expensive, this one was a pretty good price.
      Glad you liked the presentation and thank you very much for watching and for taking the time to tell me about your Wirkkala puukos.

    Tim, how much were these when they came out in '61? I thought they were kind of a artsy-fartsy coffee table knife---you know---"famous designer dabbles in traditional crafts"---so i just pictured them sitting around on those low 1960's coffee tables and being gorgeous but mostly unused. But this one has been USED. Hammered on. So i guess they got used and weren't just a collector's knife. And would you/did you put a secondary bevel on it? Saber grinds confuse me. But then so does my coffeemaker...
    Now on to "Typical Features of the Finnish Puukko" which i've seen prob 2 dozen times but still find it interesting.

    • @KuukkeliBushcraft
      @KuukkeliBushcraft  5 месяцев назад +1

      I don't remember how much they were in 61 I am not that old 😂, They do however work great for stirring coffee although no better than a spoon. Maybe they were coffee table knives but in 60 years it's not suprising that they have been used at some point as they are also fully functional knives. I am pretty sure many of them have gone to knife heaven this way.
      As for the high scandi grinds, they generally come with a small micro bevel. I usually maintain them at a nearly 0 grind with just a few passes on the strop at a lower angle. Nowadays also we generally have better steels though. Many of these old puukkos are actually quite soft.
