Thank you so much! God bless you! I see what I was doing wrong; I would use heavy attacks a lot and feints a lot and would wonder why my attacks aren’t landing faster when I had initiative. Thank you so much!
On a loosely related note, I'm curious about the mechanics of active parry/counter. I feel like sometimes it works as expected, but then there are times where I'll begin a successful counter, turn to face an adjacent enemy during that counter swing, and catch their sword with my teeth instead of it being blocked as I would've expected. It feels like there's some rule that I'm missing. Anyway, thanks for the video!
There are no definitive timings for active parry, but we know how it works. For ripostes, it begins at the start of the riposte. For counters, it begins when the counter successfully counters. Counters also last less/more active parry proportional to how fast the weapon is (faster weapons have less active parry, slower weapons have longer active parry)
Thanks for this Dave. Often find myself riposting into heavy feints way too often and wasting my intiative. It just doesnt work with better players and usually gets me killed a lot in dueling servers.
Good video, but there is one thing missing: You did not tell that certain weapons/ weapon match ups can bypass initiative too. Best example would be a knive vs almost any twohanded weapon.
really nice, short & clear video! i like it. i'm really dissatisfied with initiative in Chivalry. it's not very strict, and as you said, when you want to feint/do heavy attack, you can get hit. the game revolves mostly around feints, to bait enemy counters. but this kind of 'initiative system' provides an advantage to players who play Longsword/one-handed weapons, as they can quickly hit you while you are trying to outplay them with feint. it's also hard to drag, as you can also get 'gambled'. but that's just my piece of cake. i believe that good players are aware of this & they are ready to not get hit between the combos. but i think the game should 'protect' you and make your initiative stronger.
I made a joke the other day about how if you play chivalry 2 like chivalr:mw by only using the attack and cancel button, initiative is very consistent! 😂 Regardless, Chivalry 2 has the most tools out of any slasher, but all the new tools added such as heavy attacks and specials don't fall under the initiative umbrella, and that can leave people dissatisfied. I still firmly believe that slow weapons are extremely powerful even if it seems like fast weapons have the advantage. This is supported by which weapons are popular in competitive play and tournaments.
Great explanation. It's not really that complicated but it's hard to put into words. The mount and blade community calls this priority. Or at least it used to years ago, don't know if that's still true. And I think it's basically analogous to Frame Advantage in fighting games.
Basically is frame advantage, except it's a little different in that you can use an attack that has initiative and still be interrupted because you didn't aim properly.
I’m new to the game, but have played allot. In my experience, repostes don’t guarantee initiative - for majority of players are able to backup before I can swing after I’ve reposted their attack.
Maybe I'm just misunderstanding, but don't certain weapons also attack faster and thus have initiative even when you chain a combo. For example, if you use a greatsword you can't chain against a shortsword because they can just stab you in the face
If you haven’t already I would love to see a guide to jabbing as it’s kinda the only thing I have trouble with. Apologies if you already have a video about that! Edit:Found it, such an awesome channel keep up the good work💯
Thanks for video! So does it mean that if someone after successful attack does heavy attack on me, I can just gamble and hit them? I believe this only works with fast weapons
Coaching is available to anyone on any platform. But you will need to use Discord to coordinate it. Check out my services at mfy.gg/@dave for more info!
Not exactly, a jab collision does not grant you initiative with all weapons. It's not exactly neutral either, because technically the person who jabbed second can throw out their attack slightly faster, but it's not enough of an advantage to let you hit them first if you're using a slower weapon. I would treat jab collisions as neutral.
Is it true that some one handed weapons are fast enough that, even with a successful riposte, they can still get a swing in before your riposte can hit? In the heat of fighting, I can't help if I instinct feinted into a different swing and THAT'S why or the weapon is just fast enough to beat my swing time.
It is true, but this issue can be circumvented. Ripostes can be outpaced by one handed weapons, but 'Quick Ripostes' or 'Delayed Ripostes' cannot. I would check out my video All Things Riposte for more information on this.
my question is is kicking trash? i always read kicks and it guarantees a punish and even if i dont read it chances are i can dodge whatever attack he throws for the guard break, plus the kick itself might miss. I know the purpose of kick but isnt going around guard just better if you can do it? The only real situation i find it great in is when you outnumber one guy thats going super saiyan blocking everything, you just kick him so ur teamates attacks all go thru
I don't understand very well how sometimes the counter is very fast (0chace to block or counter it) and sometimes, not so much (adversary manages to block/counter it). A ''guaranteed'' counter is a very early counter (I guess ?) Or a very late one (a reward for being , well, late ? (More risks)). Thank you in advance !
This is what's referred to as an early counter, but it is totally blockable and counterable. There's no such thing as an unblockable counter, no matter how fast it is.
another great vid dave. unrelated, but i have a question about the one handed mace. what attack is the fastest and what attack has the most range? (aside from special)
nope. you do not have initiative unless you perform one of the three actions mentioned (ripostes, counters, successful attacks) in fact, plenty of players will bait you into attacking by purposefully missing their first attack and then comboing it into another.
@@SoterDaveman u have some great points this is a huge part of my game, run up on someone with a big cleave miss turn away and when they inevitably come to my back its free, big part of my strat for dealing with big groups
"Successful attacks grant initiative". I don't think it's true for all weapon combinations. I.e. the highlander sword - which of course is an extreme example - can be easily interrupted by most of the 1h weapons after landing a hit. Hell, I remember being interrupted by the War Axe accel, not to mention the longsword. Same goes for all slow comboing weapons (except for most of the blunts due to stop on hit).
If you're manipulating your swings properly, you can be guaranteed a combo with the Highlander Sword or any slow weapon. Even against fast weapons! Just takes practice!
You need to do it properly, meaning a quick riposte. I would also be sure to accelerate your attack by dragging and using proper footwork. You should be fine then 🙂
You'll need to utilize what's called a quick or delayed riposte. It's extremely difficult, but you could learn more in All Things Riposte. You can also book a session if you'd like further explanation

That's why I mentioned Quick and Delayed ripostes, which allow you to maintain initiative regardless of weapon matchup.

wouldn't an opponent missing an attack against you grant you initiative? or is that a different thing entirely

is riposting multiple enemies really that advanced? i feel like once you can drag attacks its kinda the next natural step
Yes! Very little of the playerbase is capable of consciously manipulating their attacks to target multiple enemies

Basically, yes. You reset to neutral
