      That doesn't follow. There are lots of things people (anyone) would WANT to do but they can't or won't because of other conflicting motivations, like empathy, morality, laws, or obligations towards others. Since different parts of the brain process different types of motivations, if we 'lost' some parts of our brain that process these conflicting motivations, that would change how we process and act as a consequence.

    • @aurtosebaelheim5942
      @aurtosebaelheim5942 16 дней назад +11

      Nah, people retcon their past thoughts all the time. It's hard to look at your past self and accept that you earnestly believed something different, much easier to convince yourself that you've always held your current beliefs but "I lacked critical information", "I had to lie about it because of outside pressures", "I was misled", etc.
      He was probably telling the truth but his beliefs have now changed and he's retroactively decided that he was lying about his old beliefs. This doesn't make things any better, but if you used to support him you shouldn't feel naïve or gullible for believing him.

    My youngest sister was in a bad car wreck. Multiple broken bones and she had four mini strokes. It changed her personality. She used to hate spicy foods, now she eats them with no problem, and she's much quicker to lose her temper and flip out when she gets upset or stressed. Strokes change your brain.

    • @AK-jm1sc
      @AK-jm1sc 16 дней назад

      The spicy food part is interesting because actually our mouths don't "taste" spice at all, it's a sensory illusion created by our brains. Our brain interprets capsaicin as being something hot that burns us, even though it doesn't actually burn. We feel the sensations of burning because our body starts to "defend" us against this imaginary problem. Some animals for example lack this part of the brain that causes this reaction, so they can eat the spiciest food with no problem. I'm wondering if in the case of your sister, she also had damage to this region of the brain.

    Honestly, it's probably more like:
    1) He got scared of losing his reelection due to opposition from lobbyists, so he decided to support their interests.
    2) Supporting those interests put him in hot water with his supporters. He had to choose between continuing to support those lobbyists or deciding to go against them. Fearing what those lobbyists could do in the upcoming, and not knowing how much support he may have lost, he decided to support the lobbyists again.
    3) He continued to get put into increasing hot water with his supporters. At that point, he likely thought he was in too deep. Now that he was in too deep, and would thus never regain the support he lost, he probably figured that he should look for an entirely new group of supporters and/or make bank while his term lasted.
    4) He was originally supposed to be an extra Senate seat to push Democratic and Progressive agendas. This extra seat would have given people like Manchin less kingmaker power. Those that very much didn't want such policies pushed through needed a way to equalize this Democratic and Progressive victory.
    That made him a high person of interest for those lobbyists as well. Now that his support went sideways they had a new opening to bring him to their side, either by offering large amounts of money, aid in finding new supporters, or both.

    In terms of behavioral association and neurological basis for political stances, the #1 most associated emotion to Conservatism is Disgust. There have been studies from NIH, various universities, etc; and even in this consistently repeating pattern, the conclusions aren't particularly definitive as the methodology has come into question. More than a particular emotional state, the most definitive correlations to political leanings are wealth, education ,and other socioeconomic metrics.

      More generally it's amygdala activity ('reptile brain'). Disgust, anger, fear, anxiety, threat generation/classification, base emotions and the like. We see the same brain area activity in highly religious people (fundamentalists), or religious 'thinking' generally.

      I knew someone who had a stroke and couldn't remember how to say any proper nouns, but he could write them, look at them, and say them. The brain is wild. He recovered in a few months, which is why neuroscientists rush to study stroke victims to understand how the brain works. (see, "The man who mistook his wife for a hat")

    On a theoretical basis, brain damage could make Fetterman more conservative, but there's no way to say that with certainty without having access to his medical files. As far as I'm aware, he hasn't said where the stroke happened in the brain and I'm not sure if he's even said if it was ischemic or hemorrhagic.
    The only thing I've seen him say is that he's had issues with his auditory processing which makes me think the stroke was most likely temporal. If not temporal, maybe parietal or thalamic, but I'd put my money on it being a temporal stroke.
    Either way, the only type of the three that could cause more aggression is temporal, but it could just as easily cause more passive behaviour. Whether either of those could cause someone to become more politically conservative is kind of toss up. Honestly, I think it could also make you more progressive.
    If he did become less progressive as a result of a stroke, it's much more likely that it was related more to the recovery period. From experiencing of recovery from brain damage, there is lot of frustration and anger involved and that gets aimed at yourself, at the world and at the people around you. That is more likely to change how someone thinks about the world than them struggling with anger issues as a result of brain damage.
    You're also probably rethinking how you think about life as well; near death experiences will do that to you, even when you're eight years old.
    He might also just be using it as a shield for the financial corruption. Oh, it's not the money being paid to me to make less progressive that's making me less progressive, it's the brain damage.

    It's not the overactive Amygdala that is the problem! The problem is with the smaller less active Anterior Cingulate Cortex and Cingulate Gyrus sections of the brain, affecting ones ability to think critically.
    The conclusion of Conservative vs Liberal brain was a Conservative scientist literally incapable of understanding the smaller, less active ACC and Cygulate Gyrus is the issue, and not the overactive Amygdala, creating too much fear and aggression, fight or fight response.
    Without the ability to think critically, the individual will be morally challenged to the point of being extremely dangerous when elected to office.

    Cognition ability is correlated with political views according to the research we have. Where lower cognitive performance correlates with authoritarian right views and vice-versa. Basically the more often you are able and willing to think, given you don't lack emotional intelligence (otherwise you'll probably be generally more apolotical) the more you are likely to research, retrospect, correct your views and well think about policies, implications e.t.c.
    Thus what he describes is probably: "Finally, I am now thinking less and it's more simple to be right wing and don't care much abt anything that requires thinking and I can't even realise it's bad bc I don't have an ability or willingness to think abt it as well."
