Hello, Romanian here. I just want to say that, in my country, anti-fascism is nearly non-existent. A great many of our cultural figures were fascists and anti-semites, and the country is choc-full of monuments in their honor, including street names. There is legislation against some of this, but enforcement is extremely lax, due in no small part to the fact that this legislation was adopted at Western behest and pressure, and not because the people genuinely wanted it, so in consequence the people don't really enforce it.
Now why I told you all this. Because, by Western standards, Romania should be particularly susceptible to what just happened in France and Germany. And yet this is not the case, the center held strong and gained a clear majority of the vote.
Yup, the same happened in Scandinavia these European elections, the far right and right as a whole lost seats... because they had power and didn't do any better then the others. In many countries it's not a move towards fascism, it's just dissatisfaction with how things are, so people want to try something new... it happens to be on the right now, it will fail just like it did in the UK.... because it's not really a problem with doctrine.
Romania is in an economic boost though so it makes sense people are trustful in the centrist status quo. This right wing sweep normally comes in social or economic unrest
This is perhaps because the center is fascism ? Just a non violent form of it. Antifascism is the worst result of fascism
Well because communists and fascist are two evils of the same coin
Because the socdems and right formed corruption aliance to continue leaching the system, Romania is one of the most corrupt countries in EU (It is hard to be worse than Orban). Also the far right pumps up their support from immigration and it is hard to do that in Romania because nobody wants to live in Romania. Emigration is waaay higher than immigration.

It’s more anti-Arab than anti-black.
Very true! France is far faaar more anti-Arab than anti-Blacks. French racists sees blacks as "lazy big childrens", but Arabs are basically untermenchs for them.
It's both
Let's agree it's both to varying degrees and just call it anti-African.

from a somehwat rural perspective, almost ALL of the hate is blasted towards muslims (read: arabs)
still racist against black people ofc, but it's taken the big backseat. i feel like lgbt people are more maligned then black people in france these days, but that's hard to say
When I was in college, I had an African history class, from 1880 till 1997 (so colonization to the fall of Mobutu), and my teacher pointed out that France was, by and large, the most brutal and divisive of all the colonial powers, with only one exception, Portugal. Portugal's war to keep Mozambique was so brutal that it's actually mind boggling to try to comprehend but, Portugal only had Angola and Mozambique....France had all of northwest Africa, almost all anyways, they had so much. So Vaush's comment at the end, Vaush is correct. The brutality was not unique to Africa either, Syria, Lebanon, and Vietnam all faced the same issue. The French would go in, empower a small, hated minority, which made that minority indebted to France, and thus, 100% loyal, and rule through them. All that did was make that minority (example, the Alawites of Syria) even MORE hated. It was a lose - lose for the natives.
All the colonial powers empowered small minority groups to help them rule. I would say the Belgian colonial empire was the worst, actually, because they made no effort to prepare Congo-Kinshasa for independence. All of the other colonial powers, including France, made some effort by training locals in law and bureaucracy. Belgium made almost no effort with that. That's partly why Congo-Kinshasa fell into chaos almost immediately after Belgium withdrew in 1960.
@@coldsoupwithsalt Yeah they all did it, but I was always taught the French were by far the most prolific.
I do like that you brought up the Belgian Congo. Congo/Zaire is a unique case, in my opinion. Mobutu managed to bumble his way into a stable, growing regime in the 1970s till the 1980s (with the US's money mainly helping, but also France and Belgium too), and he managed to tear it all up on his own, with his own guiding hand of corruption and mismanagement. I still France's nonsense in Lebanon and Syria are just the worst, like, in my opinion, the legacy of their colonial domination can be seen daily, and not in a good way.
I think the petty ass, revenge driven, mass carpet bombing Portugal did on Mozambique AFTER they lost the war might be the worst though. It's in like complete reverse of Belgium just bouncing on Congo/Zaire. Not only did Portugal not abandon it, but when they lost, they kept coming back for me. Though my teacher said Portugal had way more to lose, since it was so small compared to its European rivals at home.
But to be fair, comparing war crimes and conquests is like comparing cancer to AIDS, they're both not a joke, they're deadly serious and in the upper echelons of problems someone can face. Sorry, you really made the old scholar in my think with your comment. I loved it.
these days, most of the racist rethoric is blasted at muslims (read: arabs)

@@Rudero3 The Enlish are more kniwnfor it at least, with Rwanda as prominent example, but not sure who did it more.
@@cegesh1459 usually the English would find a popular local ruler or figure and elevate them, unlike what they did in Rwanda. That was kind of a fringe case in my opinion. The English usually came in, eliminated the immediately leadership, empowered junior local leadership, and thus, indebted them to English power.
But let's not forget that France is one of the few former colonial powers that STILL actively interferes in their former colonies' affairs. Like Mali, Chad, Niger, Senegal, so forth. England had least kept a good distance from its former colonies.

i mean, what is that party guy gonna do? he doesn't control any military or police forces, the only reason people listen to him is because they all agree he is the leader. if they say he isn't, they can literally just ignore him.
Unfortunately, I think the reluctance of many Républicains (LR) to ally with the Rassemblent National (RN) has less to do with them being fashy, and more because LR was the biggest party in France until Macron took over, and they'd find it humiliating to be the smaller party in an alliance. The voting bases of LR and RN are quite similar, and on social issues they vote together most of the time.

Is this the start of the pendulum swing back to the left?
They just had a great month for solar energy.
Hello from France,
Just to point out that the conditions from Glücksmann were an unconditional support to Ukraine and a willingness to work within the European Union. The french far left is very anti-american, anti-NATO and anti-EU (to the point of having, all in all, pro-Putin foreign affairs positions), so it was a good thing that Glücksmann forced these conditions into the alliance deal.
Moreover, once he got them, he joined the New Popular Front, so it's not really a case of social democrats choosing neoliberal status quo over socialist ideals.
Just say they're tankies, which at the end of the day is not leftist.
@@blackmage1276 well, that person is lying, tankies have not had any real place in french left wing in years. While some were pretty russia aligned (until ukraine) it was mostly because of anti-americanism.
@@vipira1001isnt french people being anti every other nation kind of a french thing? I dont think they need tankies for that. I mean france even had their whole ordeal with nato and stuff

Someone made a montage of the crazy stuff happening with Les Républicains as a spoof of the opening to The Office, and it was really a comedy for those first few days. It's calmed down a bit on the comedic side, sadly lots of crazy stuff still happening and tons of people saying they won't vote for the Popular Front because LFI is part of it and they've been called antisemitic tons, some of which based on actually stupid, clumsy or actually antisemitic comment from some of the members (but it's not like other parties aren't also full of antisemitic people, sadly), but mostly because they vocally opose the genocide.
But when people say they'll vote for RN instead, which is antisemitic in the way it acts and votes, as well as discriminatory towards every other minority, it's just ridiculous. "I heard this worker ant might actually be a poisonous spider so I'm gonna share my house with this face-eating leopard instead" kind of vibe.
