I find it kinda poetic that the 2 powers who fought over the control of the balkans for centuaries would collapse figthing as allies in a war started in the same place.

Well, his statement is quite simple. The fascination of many people for Napolean does not come from his expansion, maybe here his military skill. It rather comes from him being a multi talent that changed the times.
One interesting thing happened in the aftermath of the Battle of Vienna when the Hapsburg forces captured the Ottoman camp . The Grand Vizier's personal harem and zoo (including giraffes) had been put to death but there were some strange sacks filled with brown beans. The Austrians at first tried eating them but on interrogating prisoners tried grinding them to powder and mixing the result with hot water. The Viennese obsession with coffee had begun.
That’s probably only a legend, coffee houses existed in Venice, England etc. before 1683.
Also the guy who opened the first coffee house in Vienna was an Armenian who knew coffee already from his home country.

When a threat becomes too large to stand alone you tend to team up against it. It is basic power politics. In the holy league's case it was until ottımans became too weak to defend themselves against any of those, especially against austrian and russian empires, states.
Russia and the HRE (Germany was not yet a thing) had not much issues with each other as they had no common land borders and both were Christian countries
the Commonlwealth was a bit of an annoyance but at that time it had slowed it's expansion and the little border wars were ending in stalemates or with very little gains don't tend to gather much hard feelings between nations, and it was peak European politcs so enemies of yesterday become today trade partners
trouble started once the German states and Russia figured they could carve themselves a nice chunk of Poland and the latter couldn't do much about it
All they needed was the power of friendship.

tbh the ottomans just collapsed and lost a huge amount of land(basically 90% of the middle east) wheras the byzantines fought till the bitter end all the way until they were reduced to constantinople.

Not really sure what you're talking about here as the Ottomans had already had a concrete foothold in the Balkans over 100 years before the fall of Constantinople. They already had feudatory control over Serbia off and on and had control over pretty much everything BUT Constantinople and peninsular Greece at that point. Really, they were already like half their furthest extent into the Balkans before they even took Constantinople. Just missing Wallachia and Hungary. There were even already able to crush a crusader army at the Battle of Nicopolis. They then went on to defeat ANOTHER Crusade in 1444. Seems like they were already into Europe and against christendom, tbh.
Let's add to that the tired old cliche of framing this war as Islam vs. Christendom. In reality, there were muslims fighting for the Poles and Christians fighting for the Ottomans throughout this war. This was not a very nuanced presentation of the power-play.
It's incredibly boring and downright wrong to frame medieval europe conflicts and wars as "CHRISTIANITY VERSUS ISLAM!".
Ottomans were good friends and trading partners with venice for a long time, while also expanding south towards Mamluks and east towards Persia. There was a lot of strife between the pope and byzantium as well as other orthodox kingdoms in the balkans. Many central and western european wars happened despite both countries being christian. A large part of the Reconquista was the constant infighting between muslim emirs and caliphs of North Africa and Iberia, and the melting culture pots allowed for easier conquest. Sicily was ruled by both Muslims and Christians, with most conflicts on the island being entirely unrelated to religion. But nooo... it's always somehow Christians vs Muslims....
Even the commonwealth during the deluge was attacked and cooperated in attacking other christian countries just to survive.
I can't tell if this dude is trying to push something here or if he actually views history in this shallow way.
@@boboddyb2217 I definitely agree with both of you, but even if he does want to frame it as some tired, played out, ahistorical "battle of civilizations" between Christianity and Islam, he's over a century too late by singling out Constantinople. The hyper-focus on Constantinople and acting like the Ottomans weren't a relevant power until then feeds even more into the "battle of civilizations" angle.
I don't know what he's going for with that to be honest. I don't feel like he's the type who'd do that for modern political means. I think he just has a really shallow view on it despite being a history channel. I've noticed a lot of history commenters deliver bad reads on historical events when they're trying to do these "overview for context" bits to get to their main topic
Also needless to say, the Ottomans were nowhere close to "one of the largest caliphates" and the way that was phrased didn't even make sense in context.

It’s worth noting that the ottomans were still a great power for a long time after this and the ottoman army at Vienna was mostly Transylvanian and Hungarian militia with only a small group of professionals involved. It could be argued that the ottoman decline was caused more by its inability to adapt to changing conditions rather than one lost war.

6:16 why? why did the Ottoman just declare war, then wait an entire winter - giving the Habsburg time to find allies - before attack? what's wrong with the good old "mobilize your army, declare war and jump on your unprepared enemy" strategy?
The army would suffer heavy casualties due to winter had it attempted to march
It was taking time to form such a huge force in those times, therefore, their enemies would know they were forming their military forces. So you would need to prepare your military campaign during the winter to be ready to go invade the enemy at the end of spring in the hope to have the control of your military objective by the start of fall. So if the enemy had spies or merchant in the enemy land, they could get the information of the preparation of the army(send calls to the vassals and prepare the weaponnery(the big guns and shit).
Kind of an action was very very dishonorable. At that time all european kings were betraying eachother but this is unimaginable for ottomans.(khalif and emperor) Ottoman was holding such a big lands(even till somalia- yes somalia-) with only very few soldier mainly prestige and legitemacy. Prestige, legitemacy and fair management was more important than lands in that time. For example crimea, libya, chad(for a short time) and many others become willingly part of Empire. It is little bit difficult to understand in today's time. It is nearly impossible for europeans. because of "Ottoman image" in their minds 🙂. In Ottoman Empire a simple black guy can become a palace secretary. Which can be equivelant today's minister/viceminister or 2-3 star general. Understanding ottomans is difficult 😂. I hope you get your answer.

In Bulgaria we had many monarchs named Ivan and in western historiography they are mostly referred to as "John". This is quite logical though. Jan , Ivan and John are all equivalents of the same Christian name.

Oh hey, isn't this right before the setting of Mount & Blade: With Fire and Sword? If I remember right, that game's story was based loosely in this area and time period.
Nah, It was just before the events in this video. Game starts after Cossacks win battles near Zhovti Vody, Korsun', Piliavtsi, Zborov (Don't remember if it was before or after defeat near Berestechko). In the beggining of the video there are some sentences about Cossack uprising - there the game starts.

It is funny to see Christian illustrations of Ottoman army portrays it as like badouins. Most of the Ottoman elite infantry force was converted balkan christians and elite cavalry force was heavily armoured sipahis. Ottoman army was one of the earliest empires in europe to have standardized army. They were not a band of saracens.
You mean that 1 black archer next to the Arab archer on the Ottoman side? The Ottoman forces were multiracial and multi religious. Those soldiers were most likely levies from vasals in Arabia and Africa. Similar to the Serbian Kings serving the Ottomans in the Middle Eastern wars.

Polish-Turkish War The Battle of Khotyn- Hussaria 1700 cavalry. After the battle of Vienna. Turkey did not want to fight Husaria anymore.

Thank you, looks very professional. 17th century was especially bloody for Ukraine. Also it was when Ukraine started loosing its independence to Russian Moscow state. Cossacks are a very interesting phenomenon, they were kind of border blazers called by locals as protectors of Orthodox faith (threatened by Muslim Tartars and pressed by Catholic Poles). Purportedly they emerged as a separate walk of life like samurai caste in Japan. There were two main types of Cossacks - 1. Ukrainian Cossacks called Zaporozhian Cossacks (their base was in Southern Ukraine Dniepr river basin and all this area of riverine islets, marshes and steppes) 2. Russian Don river Cossacks. Weird but simple way to differ between them was that Ukrainians normally would prefer moustache and Russian Don Cossacks preferred only beards. Lastly one small remark though Ottoman Empire was not a caliphate (min 8:30)

I feel like this is a great addition to Kaliningrad General’s video on the “Ottoman Empire but SrPelo references” for that one part where the Poles canned Turkey.
I finally made the connection that the Siege of Vienna was a mere 35 years after Westphalia (End of the 30 years war, one of the most brutal conflicts in history). Probably helps explain the confidence of the Ottomans and the ability of the empire to start reconquering territory afterwards as I'm guessing the HRE was just about getting on it's feet again after such huge population losses.
Polish lithuanian commonwealth wasn't as strong as it used to be and it was during it's collapse these times

It is worth mentioning that the Leopold I the Holy Roman Emperor didn't even fake tipping his hat to Sobieski after he came with combined German-Commonwealth forces, and lifted the siege, which led to outrage around Polish troops. He was unthankful.
He then didn't want to pursue Ottomans immediately as such a campaign would make Sobieski first conqueror and he wanted to lead his own campaign - I guess that's just politics but it perfectly shows how you cannot expect gratitude and fairness in dem politics.
Well the Austrians managed to piss off also the Saxons (led by Johann Georg III. the Elector of Saxony) who had helped with around 10.000 soldiers during the Battle of Vienna, but given that the Saxons were protestants they apparently didn’t feel welcome and left only three days after the battle to move their troops back to Saxony.
The Saxons got only a tiny share of the plunder, which was probably one of the reasons why they were angry and left.

You did not mention that Sobieski was elected after a victorious battle against Ottomans at Chocim in 1673 and his campaigns made the war less of a disaster than it was at the start. Edit: typle

Both were Polish victories, though the second was far more decisive as 80% of the Ottomans participating in the battle were casualties(Before Zenta the highest Ottoman casualties in a single battle). P.S.: Historical books supported by Polish, Turkish and Moldawian sources seem legitimate dude.

There's some pretty bad Ottoman history here.
For one, the 'Ottoman Decline' thesis, which presupposes that the Ottoman Empire went down a 200 year long, irreversible decline following the Siege of Vienna is vastly discredited in modern historiography. It's "Rome fell because of Christianity and/or moral decadence" levels of outdated.
Really, the Ottoman Empire for the vast majority of the 18th Century was doing just fine. They were still considered a European Great Power, and were largely at peace. Just because expansion stopped, does not mean a decline set in, prosperity is about more than military conquest.
Even during the 19th Century, when things started going south for the Empire, there was not an inevitable decline. Sultans like Mahmud II and Abdulmejid I were able to enact a whole range of reforms, and even stopped the Russian Empire (with help from the UK and France) from carving them up. Even as late as 1913 I think they had pretty decent odds of survival, with Empire's death sentence being the disasterous decision to join the Central Powers in WWI.
There's also some weird 'clash of civilizations' background narrative going on here. That the Ottomans were some kind of evil, Muslim Orc Empire that was obsessed with conquering all of Europe.
The Ottomans were just like any other Empire, they were driven by power politics. They had just as much an intention of conquering Europe as any other European power, if not less, seeing as they also had plenty of land to contest in Africa and the Middle East. Even if the Ottomans had taken Vienna, they probably wouldn't have pushed much further, as their supply lines would have been stretched massively.

It stopped expanding, it went on losing most wars against European powers and compared to western Europe it stopped modernising. In the 19. century Egypt fought two wars against the Ottomans and would have beaten and perhaps disintegrated them if it wasn't for European powers to stop Egypt.

By the later 19th Century they were ahead of many smaller countries in Europe, and if we're talking "modernising" in terms of liberal reforms, the Ottomans were certainly ahead of countries like Germany or Russia, atleast during the constitutional periods.

I think it's worth noting that Mehmed Ali Pasha was not an Egyptian, he was an Albanian, and a previous Ottoman subject. The fact that people like him were able to rise within the Ottoman government and fill the power vacuum in Egypt like that, to me, speaks of the Ottoman system's strengths during this time.
It's also worth noting that the Ottomans had been completely exhausted by crisis after crisis by that point. Dealing with the Janissaries, the Greeks, Great Power Intervention, all in a very quick timespan.
The subsequent decades of the 19th Century were comparatively peaceful, atleats until 1877.

It's actually pretty awesome to hear someone mention the Ukrainian Cossacks as an actually valuable part of history, as almost nobody knows about them.

Would you ever consider doing a video on the Seige/Defence of Malta? Not the one from the Second World War, though that would be interesting as well. The one that established the presence of the Knights of the Hospital of St. John in Malta, and the country's conversion to Catholicism.
One should also mention the Second Battle of Mohács in 1687, when the troops of the HRE destroyed an Ottoman Army which allowed them to conquer large territories from the Ottomans and as a result the Hungarians crowned a prince of the House of Habsburg as their king.
The Imperial Army under Charles of Lorraine was round about 60.000 strong, when he moved his army to a different location the Ottomans decided to attack the 20.000 strong left wing of the Imperial Army which was commanded by the Elector of Bavaria Maximilian II. Emmanuel.
The Ottoman Army was also round about 60.000 strong and outnumbered the left wing of the Imperial Army during its attack at least 2 to 1, but they suffered a major defeat. The HRE troops suffered around 600 killed, the Ottomans lost an estimated 10.000 and also a whole bunch of cannons, flags and other nice treasures were captured. The tent of the Grand Vizier that was captured during the battle is in the Bavarian Army museum in Ingolstadt.
The Grand Vizier Sarı Süleyman Paşa was later executed by the Ottomans for this defeat.

There are several big battles before Zenta, Mohacs and Salankamen. Battle of Salankamen was especially unlucky for Ottomans because their commander in chief who was their best general and could reverse fortunes of war, was shot and dead. Still, even if the winged hussars did not arrive and Vienna captured, Ottoman decline was more deep and widespread, it could not reverse the ultimate fall of the empire.

The picture at 11:51 is from the Battle of Belgrade in 1456 in which the Hungarians successfully defended the city. One of the towers of the city had been taken and the Ottoman flag with crescent and moon had been raised, in the chaos of battle allegedly Titus Dugovic, who is seen to the right, would tackle down the standard-bearer making the both of them fall to their death. Though maybe the historical account is false, it is a symbol of self-sacrifice in the service of God.
