When Cervantes was in the Battle of Lepanto he said: "Put me in the most dangerous position". So they put him in a small longboat that accompanied the galley of Don Juan. It was there where his hand was shattered. His fellow crew members gave him great praise for his bravery and treatment of his companions, which afterward so impressed Don Juan that he wrote for him a letter which was to be a pardon (for dueling within the Royal grounds) and which would allow him to return home after many years from self imposed exile. Let's not forget the relatively small and obscure elite fighting forces that participated; Including the "Knights of ST. Stefano"; an Italian knightly order.
The keys of success were the famous Spanish “Tercios” embarked and cleverly distributed among the different Christian formations and the on time sending by Don Álvaro de Bazán commanding the rearguard of ten Spanish galleys and a group of frigates and brigantines to the center of the deployment to support the success that the capture of the Ottoman flagship might entail. As a result of this reinforcement, the Ottoman center was totally undone.

The Battle of Lepanto might be my favorite naval battle of all time. Such great things were accomplished, even the kings engaged in personal combat, including the enemy general. A desperate fight and a great victory for Christianity. The heroic conduct of the leaders always impresses me with pre-modern battles. You read about various Roman commanders that did similar things too; they would charge into combat at the very front of the line. Julius Caesar does it many times in his campaigns in Gaul and Spain and really all over Europe. You see it here in the Battle of Lepanto too. The most recent example I can think of is Napeleon doing it a couple times, and American civil war commanders also doing this sort of thing sometimes - and high level officers like Colonel's, like Custard, though that's a losing example. It's much easier to follow a commander that shares the same danger as you than someone sitting in an office 2,000 miles away or more and enjoying the luxuries of a lifestyle you can't even imagine. That's why the Generals of the past had extremely loyal followers. So do most actually brave Generals that fight alongside the troops. It has a positive morale effect on your own troops, and a negative one on the enemy if their commander isn't fighting too - and it's gonna make a target out of the general but that will concentrate fire(or swords) in one direction which can more easily be countered.
Historic fact- the Battle of Actium where the forces of Mark Anthony squared off against those of Octavian was foight at the almost exact geographical location as the Battle of Lepanto. Strange but true.
Yes Albert Sydney Johnson lead from the front and was shot behind his kneecap by one of own troops and bled to death as the bullet hit a major artery. Perhaps leading from the front isn't always a good idea!
I would agree that troops tend to value their general serving under the same conditions as they are enduring, one thinks of General Rommel in North Africa in WW2. Whether that is advisable in general terms though, is extremely doubtful. The equivalent of the Kings and Princes of mediaeval days is not 'Generals', or other army officers. You would had to have had President Roosevelt seeing action in WW2 to duplicate King Henry V at Agincourt. Or have seen Queen Elizabeth 2 and PM Churchill fighting at the battle of the Normandy beaches. But even if you restrict it to high ranking officers, it is a bad idea to expose your greatest military minds to enemy fire. The UK was very fortunate that Admiral Nelson died during the Battle of Trafalgar and not beforehand from enemy fire. If the Allies could have taken out the top German generals in WW2 they would have certainly been delighted to have that opportunity. Leading from the front is a recipe for being leaderless.
Thoughts on this subject,go back to QUB modern history department and some of the finest lectures delivered by the the then Dr Lynn Green. His lectures were part of the “Europe in transition”,course.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
They were Catholics. The different Christians were against the Church.
This battle was won by Mary Queen of Heaven by virtue of the Christian army praying the Rosary through the night before the battle. Mary Queen of the Most Holy Rosary pray for us! Pray the Rosary! It’s a powerful spiritual weapon.
Through the intercession if Mary.
Fun italian urban legend about this battle. In Italy there is a stereotype of the Genoan to be stingy. So it is said that while the Venician captains send home letters to announce the great victory in Lepanto, the Genoan send home news to cancel the insurance on their ships.
In Lepanto ,where some ships with 100% Greek captains ans crews ,let's mention some " Tα Δύο Δελφίνια 2 Dolfins " Capten Fragiskos Xenos
" Hπαρεα των Λιονταριων" captain Δομενικος Ζακκας
" Ιωάννης Άγγελος "captain Ieronumos Angelo's
" Δυσαναγνωστο" Captain Λεωνίδας Γιωτας
" Ο Χριστός της Βενετίας " captain Christopher's Contokalis
" LA patronage di Lomellino " captain Geogios Grecos
: Vu dona coun mazo" captain Louizos Cypriot
" Vu Angelo Co una spade " captain Stella's Chalkiopoulos
" Καπετάνιος του Ν.Ντορια captain Πανδοξος Πολύδωρος
" L, Aguila ,Doro con la Corona "captain Ανδρέας Καλλέργης
" LA Furia di Lommelino " captain Γιακουμης Τσιαπης
" LA patronage di Negroni" captain Λοΐζος Κ
" LA Diana di Cenova " captain Ιωάννης Γεωργίου
25.000 Greek s where serving in Venician fleet, and 4000 Greeks where serving Spaniards as members of " Terthio"
Onore al popolo greco... In quegli anni veneziani e greci erano una cosa sola... Amici e alleati per sempre!
The best presentation ever
Battle of Lepanto ,which Our Lady of Victory gave the Christian forces A Great Victory ...Well Cervantes the author of Don Quixote was still a Soldier....
I think it would be very interesting if you made some videos about cultural works of the Middle Ages like the Song of Roland and talk about their significance, same with King Arthur
Tercios del Mar, the first marine corps in history
Actually it wasn’t “John of Austria’s men” (very generic term), but the Spanish Tercios instead that presented battle at the center, just to clarify.
VIVA CRISTO REY!!!🇮🇹🇻🇦🇪🇦✝️
Excluding that the fact holy rosary was the the reason the battle was won is not nice . The Catholic soldier was very little compare to their enemy. The Catholic Church saved Europe
Fantastic introducing & explaining Video (thanks) for sharing ....May be Lepanto Naval attacking Results was first occasion embodied Ottoman Naval efforts pulled back from Adriatic & Mediterranean Sea as Regular Naval strength & converted to Turkish Pirate (Turkish Piracy ) & Sea Bandits against Christian world ....Thanks for sharing

They both had slaves, it was very common in those days, although it wasn't right.

Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary, pray for us 🙏
Our Lady of Victory pray for us.🙏
Thanks!
Thanks very much!
I've never heard of this. Thank you.
Excellent work here
Magnífico Lepanto.
I liked this one indeed.
It is important to note that Pope Pius V requested that all Catholic monarchs participate in this battle. It is important to mention that France did not.
Wonderful presentation of a great battle that I had t known of. 👍
Miguel de Cervantes the writer of El Quijote (Don Quixote) fight on Lepanto and was left one-armed on the battle
Glory to God and blessed mother Mary our Lady of Victory! ❤️
The turk-ottomans never had much luck with iberians. Before lossing to the spanish armada, turks lost to the portuguese in the Indian Ocean 👏
Sancta Maria Mater Dei, ora pro nobis!

The image of the order of battle made remember something you mentioned in a previous video about this battle, the brothers of the ill-fated Marco Antonio Bragadin, the commander at Famagusta, fought here, they probably felt they avenged their brother and this came just a few months after Bragadin's gruesome death, quite the manner to deal with bereavement.
Danke!
Thanks for the tip! All the best.
What you forgot to mention that as the battle was going the pope with all the Chrustian where praying the Rosary ,there is more to it , may God Mother Mary help us because we are again facing the same problem but in a different way yhis time .

On the bright side if you were to abandon ship in this battle you're not more than less than a mile from shore in any given direction in friendly territory. Most naval battle casualties are due to drowning.
Glad this historical series ventures past the 1291 Acre barrier.
Protestants supported Turks in that war , and were cheering and drinking in taverns hoping for their victory !
Ah, yes! The fingerprints of our Lord Jesus Christ (King of Enldess Glory) and of our Lady, Queen of the Holy Rosary, are all over this historical event. What great allies have the Church Militant! Son of God Himself, and Mother of God Herself, intervened for the sake of Christendom. Thank you!
Just one thing; the otoman fleet was bigger than the christian. Anyway, great video.
Great video! What’s the atmospheric guitar music in the background?
Look How heaven fought for us
There are huge similarities between Lepanto and Salamis. In fact Lepanto was a "modern" Salamis.
Pope Saint Pius V pray for us 🙏
The Battle of Lepanto might be my favorite naval battle of all time.
Battle of Shiloh
G K Chesterton rote a great ballad "Lepanto"

Lepanto victory was a wonderful victory. Long live the holy league
What about a video of how the people of present Croatia, BH, Serbia, Hungary etc held off Turks for centuries?
Hungary and Croatia fought the invaders for centuries and mostly stayed free, the other two fell to the Turks almost immediately and stayed that way and it shows today.
Were fire ships used as a weapon in this battle?
Here we see a prime example of salvation by works done in faith .
