That custom hinge setup is very interesting, not seen that before. Nice work on the frame.Funnily enough just as you're swapping to a tailgate on a station wagon, I'm thinking of fitting a rear door onto a pickup!

If you search ebay 'catflap tailgate hinges' or landrover catflap doors Im sure it comes up. I found the rear door on my defender was a right PITA in a strong wind - even after I fitted a gas strut - I miss the drop down tailgate of my discovery and the rangerover classic before that. Another upload goes live tomorrow - you can see the bulkhead issue. All the best Max. mat

Yes, I have a drop down flap on my 109 and constantly find it difficult to access the rear. That hinge setup seems like a good solution.

Great to see more progress Mat. Very nice work with the frame. Those hinges are very clever. Shame about the bulkhead. Similar thing happened to my brother. He sent a cylinder from one of the BSA's to a "proffessional" for a rebore. Came back with a cracked fin. Heres hoping you can get around any issues. I am sure you can. Best wishes as ever.

I used to make gates etc for a living.
Hot dip galv was the only rust protection that I endorsed.
It wasn't a question have they bent anything ? but WHICH have they bent ?
Every delivery regardless of the company .. they were all as bad as each other.
I had to collect an urgent job once and saw the manager drive the fork lift truck over someone's gates rather than manoeuvre around them.
They were all animals I concluded.
The response to complaint was "if you repair it we will dip it again for free"
So my customers were buying a second hand repaired item before I had even installed them.
It is still the only finish I would recommend for proper rust prevention.

There was two stays on my series III that went to a screw lock on each side if i remember correctly. You could drive with the top half up in the summer, but it did bounce around a bit. the stays might have attached to the bits that are missing of both sides of your door top.
I could be wrong as it's been about 30 years since i parted with it.

The torn plates in the lower corner definately held stays from the photos of others Ive seen. There appear to have been a number of different methods to secure the hatch open dependent on year.

@@lookcreations mine was a 'P' reg, was that 75. Thinking about it. it had a round large knurled knob and the stays ended with a fork with the ends turned 90°. you spun the knobs out slipped the stays between them and the frame then spun them back to lock the stays in place.
Nice to see it moving along.

Hi, you're missing the rods that keep the top door open. There suppose to be two of them, one on each side which seems to be teared off. Can send you images of mine.

Man you sure going to love getting to drive that thing instead of weld on it.

Ive started to budget in kwh/mile to account for the cost of the power consumed welding it :-)
