  • Hey guys! So last night we had the coldest weather I’ve ever experienced in my life! While it was only around -23, the wind chill bumped that number up(or down rather 😂) to an unbelievable-50! So I just wanted to share with y’all the things we did to prep our 60 year old tie stall barn and how she fared the storm! Thank so much for watching!!

    I was a dairy farmer 41 years in Minnesota so i hear you When cold spells were forecast i would stack enough hay bales along the walls in front of the manger made it nice for feeding and would help with the cold too. Block heaters are pretty much standard here

    • @bryanginder5903
      @bryanginder5903 Год назад +3

      Mrglodie- I hear ya, I do the same thing, stack bale's up along the walls for extra feed just in case one of the silo unloaders didn't want to work and the hay helps with insolation sitting against the wall

      Yep sometimes just surviving is all we can do. Im from MN and dairy farmed. One day isn't so bad but its when yah get a couple few weeks of it with no relief. Wears a person out from battling it. Planning ahead helps but when something unplanned happens such as a tank heater dying in the middle of the night and then the pipe freezing, oof its tough.
      A hayloft with small squares was a blessing during those days.

    Another tip for unthawing pipes is use some old socks or shirts, soak them in hot water and wrap and rub pipes...unthaws fast. Learned it from Gerok Farms channel. Stay warm

    Our winters are very mild now but back in the 80s we still had a month of winter will below zero! Our silos would freeze solid on the edges so we chiseled junks of frozen silage to the cows they actually chewed on them kept them busy lol ! We had no cab tractor no manure pit so we still had to spread manure every day no matter the weather! Unless the snow was to deep.or the fields to wet we would stock pile ! Our barn was new back then so no real.problems of pipes freezing! Yoi get used of the cold with lots of clothes and even more cussing lol

    We get that same cold weather almost every year for a few weeks in northwest wisconsin! I believe we are at 4 weeks of that weather for this winter already! Have had to shut the water off to the bowls before just so they wouldn't freeze and brake!

  • @oldfarmer4700
    @oldfarmer4700 Год назад +1

    I don’t care what they say about those old barns, that’s all we ever milked in and in Minnesota during the winter cows were in for the duration. Those barns like that the wood swells up from the moisture the cows put off and seals them up. During the summer some cracks would grow to a half inch but would completely shut during the winter. We lived behind the cows for over a week when all power went out and everything froze in the house during a snow storm in the 70’s. Piled up straw bales behind them and slept with the girls. Just made sure we picked cows that didnt splatter when relieving themselves when we picked our spots to sleep.

    Back in the late 1970's we had two very cold weekends in a row with windchills below 100 and actually temps of -56, even cold for us. The first weekend a bolt on the barncleaner decided to break, and almost dumped it into the spreader. The repair took a while, by which time the manure in the spreader and cleaner chute was rather crispy. That gave us problems until temps got near freezing.
    In addition silage in the silos would freeze in two feet or more. Every so often a farmer would be killed when those walls would fall down.
    To deal with frozen pipes, use a pail of hot water and wrap hot wet rags around or over the pipes. Very safe and easy to do.

Anyway in somewhere around '86 we had two weekends back to back with -90 windchills. Motors had to be unbelted and run empty for 10 minutes before putting them under load, really hard to keep Milk room warm enough. It was terrible, don't miss that in my old age.

And we still had to do the barn work!! Give them lots of salt! Salt makes them thirsty, if they're thirsty, they're going to drink water, running water don't freeze!! And back in the day, you still had to run the barn cleaner, and spread manure, and no cab tractor!! and things would be all froze up!

Back in the 1950's as a 12 year old my first job was working on a small dairy farm here in Conn. for .25, ( thats cents LOL, ) per hour. I spent many summers working there. Those were some the best times of my life. Later on my wife and I became a JD dealer, ( not ag ) and that ran for 43 years until we retired 9 years ago. My question if you don't mine me asking, is this farm in your family?

    You guys are over the top when it comes to concern about your cows. It wouldn't take much to make up some mitered frames of rough cut 1"x4" pine and staple on 6 mil polyethylene with cardboard strips to cover over your windows. The span of each set of three looks about 10 feet long and 3 feet high. The frames can be attached with 2 inch screws and readily applied/ removed every fall and spring. Windows are your biggest heat loss.
