  • Hey guys! So since we don’t raise very many of our own heifers I thought I’d take the opportunity to show y’all how a heifer that we did raise ourselves reacts to being milked in the first few milking. Hope you enjoy!!

    Hiya Taylor,
Excellent video, thank you; and get better soon, both of you. What do you mean? 'A short coffee break for you?' Why short? Are two hours not enough for you now? She certainly liked the idea of going out the back with a load of bull. Been there, done that, had the calf.
Still, daydreaming about the loader? It was a big boy. Think of all the bales you could shift with that beast. Enough even for your girls to be content? As long as they get coffee as well. Okay, as long as you get coffee as well. I'll always have it. I drink from a large Rolling Stones mug with the tongue logo on it. I'm unsure of the size; I'll have to measure it; it's about a pint. Just enough for a quick drink while I'm waiting for coffee break time to start.
I would love to see you both with double the herd and a homegrown Guernsey herd at that. Another barn next door, the same style but with oats growing upstairs rather than storing hay. Would you take on more staff or cope with all the extra work?
    Stay safe, Steve...

Thanks for the video. Always interesting to see the things you have to do to keep on top of farm work. Getting sawdust, making sure the cows get bred, and wrapping it all around milking twice a day. I envy your farm life, but not the amount of work you have to do to support it! Great stuff Tay!

Good morning Taylor, your first calf heifer looked a little tentative at first but then calmed down. I know your farm doesn’t keep your heifer calves but do you ever have a chance to buy them back for your herd? It’s great that you can use your own bull to breed your cows as AI is very expensive but also bulls can sometimes be dangerous so please be safe around them. Can’t wait to see all of your calves that are coming in March and April. Thanks again for another informative video. Just a heads up for you . Here in NE Wisconsin we are at the tail end of a winter blizzard which is headed your way. So please keep yourself and your girls warm and I hope you get better soon. 😊

Get well soon Taylor and Brent...I can relate to the same symptoms for the last two weeks myself. Our NY weather has been very unsettled with unusually high temps for this time of year and then back to reality with unusually normal wind chill temps to follow. Constant changing temps have been difficult on cows and us too. Beautiful heifer and udder she has too. I have learned from experience the best way for the heifers to learn is by gaining the experience themselves...just like you did with bringing them in the barn before calving and the more they do it the easier it gets for both you and them every day to learn the barn and milking too. Its funny their personalities how some can take right to it and some are just full of stubbornness and take more patience and effort to get them to learn...thats what makes it fun though lol We have the issue majority of the time with getting them to want to cross the gutter which only part of our barn has grates but with most heifers you can put some grain in the stanchion and entice them to want to cross...they were raised on grain so their upbringing def has its benefits. We too have alot of dry cows now and we will be having alot of calves in the next couple of months too...our baby boom is actually underway with 5 straight days of calves born and 6 total cows calved in those 5 days...which to most is hardly much but with a herd of 45 cows its more significant and definitely welcome for our milk production. I would say you def got lucky with taking the cow out to the bull...we have had several instances with cows in heat inside the barn and trying to jump other cows with the end result of broken lights and light fixtures following. Have a great day Taylor...keep on farmin and keep on with the keepin on. Thanks again for the wonderful videos and sharing with us your daily experiences

Addy, piece of cake! Nice. I remember the difference in the way Holsteins and beef cattle would kick you. The Holstein kick was rather straight line. One could see the windup so if you grabbed her over the back and pulled yourself close, you could deflect most of the hit. The beef cow, they'd swing their leg out more sideways, you did not see it coming until you were laying on the ground wondering what hit you. The good ole days.🙃

TIM from Canada for your home. Church system if they are going to be bred at a certain time, you should put some sort of a green spray paint on their legs so you know which ones are the ones to go…. Green means they need to go out a red or another colour means that they’ve already been with the bull just thought I would suggest this if you mark them early this way you know and then put their numbers in a book

Hey Taylor, Sorry you're under the weather. Question about replacements. I don't know about Maine, but here in NY we keep all of the purebred heifers for possible replacement. We found that on our farm it is cheaper to raise a replacement that buy one. Does it save you money in the long run to buy bred heifers to replace or add to the herd. Can you control the genetics of the herd by buying replacements?
