    i feel like richard's uninvolvement with lorelei's life when she was growing up (compared to emily's intrusiveness) really badly affected lorelai (like in the reboot when she couldn't name her best memory with richard at the funeral/wake). he was so silent on how emily treated lorelai and he just seems to agree because he's traditional and values his wife's word over his daughter's. his silence pretty much tells lorelei that he takes emily's side

    FINALLY SOMEONE WHO DISLIKES JESS LIKE MEEEEEE. Sorry for the caps but not really sorry. It needed to be said, Jess was a garbage boyfriend, not only in the basics (not putting any effort into the relationship, taking for granted that Rory was a pushover so he knew she would tolerate his shitty behaviour) but for the party scene where he pressured her in bed, she said NO, clearly, and more than once. In my book, he was done, i always disliked him just as much as i dislike Paris for being so rude and people justifying them as them being "brutally honest", but at the party it was cemented that Jess was trash. Wow he wrote a book? cool, don't care. Wow he told her he loved her? don't care. Got a job and wanted to repay his uncle for every dime spent on supporting his rude ass lazy ass trash teen years? cool, DO NOT CARE.

    I also didn't like how in the end all Rory's efforts of going through Chilton and Yale resulted in nothing... but my husband's unpopular opinion😅 is that this outcome is super realistic. As in real life, putting in the work doesn't always result in success and a lot of talented people with good education don't end up with successful or fulfilling careers.

    I don't agree with Richard being sweet and unproblematic. There were a few moments where Lorelai told them about her achievements and he ignores it and talks about Christopher and how successful he is. And don't forget his absolutely manipulative and evil way of treating Jason who was his partner. He ruined his whole reputation and Jason lost all his clients. He had to move and start anew only because of Richard. And at that time it did affect Lorelai as well because she was in a relationship with Jason. I think this is pretty problematic. Also the way both Richard and Emely made sure every time that they prefer Rory over Lorelai at all times - it was heartbreaking because Lorelei tried so hard to be accepted by both of them. And they still couldn't show Lorelei their love besides just a few small moments.

  • @happytofu5
    @happytofu5 Год назад +27

    To me, it felt quite realistic and sadly also relatable how the story with Dean and Jess went. I think it is likely that Rory did not really notice, or maybe tried to suppress her attraction to Jess. I interpret it that she loved Dean, but was more attracted to Jess and had to figure out everything around it. Definetly not meant as an excuse, but on the other hand she was a teenager, figuring out her first relationship. She was an asshole, but which teenager isn't.

  • @yubbadubbadubba
    @yubbadubbadubba Год назад +6

    I disagree about Richard. He was really not very present beyond the financial in Lorelei’s life. He allowed his mother to insult his wife. And his initial positive reaction to Rory was because she expressed an interest in books. It’s also implied that he looked down on Emily as he didn’t want Rory engaging in the same life and activities Emily had when she stayed with them. His concern wasn’t that he didn’t think Rory didn’t really want to do it, but that he viewed what Emily was doing as frivolous.

    Mrs Kim DID NOT ALLOW anything to Lane. In fact she threw her out. Lane was an adult and made her choices. Band, living with the guys, getting married, having a great wedding. She lost all the power and at that point she had two choices: never have contact with her only daughter or accept who she is and have a relationship with her. Yes Lane wanted her approval which explains her nail biting over the wedding dress, over her pregnancy etc. but at the end of the day she no longer needed her to allow her to do anything.

    I think Richard’s absence in Lorelei’s life contributed greatly to her flakiness with men, and that then had a ripple effect on Rory’s relationships with men. But other than that, I completely agree with you. Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino made it clear from the beginning that she wanted to show how Rory was destined to repeat Lorelei’s mistakes, so she constantly forced Rory to act out of character to ensure she turned into Lorelei 2.0, and I hated that. Even if Rory did fail to launch in the end, her coming home and working for the Stars Hollow paper should’ve been portrayed as a positive, like she realized all along that home is where the heart is and that her big time aspirations were never necessary because she’s where she was always meant to be. It didn’t have to be so bitter, but the revival was a mess so I’m not counting it as canon anyway

    • @sophiaizzy

    About the revival: I don't why NOBODY gets that Rory doesn't fácil professionally. When the revival ends, he's about to publish "Gilmore Girls", that is so obvious is about to be the break through of her carreer, Just as the series was the break through of Amy Palladino's carreer. And the fact that the idea for the book came from Jess, Rory's intelectual soul mate was só sweet. I don't understand why peoplo don't seem to notice that. She's not a failure, she's about to become a successful writer. It's so obvious te me that that was Any intended with the hole "gilmore girls" book idea. And the last line: mom, i'm pregnant. Narrativa rhyme. Genious.

    I absolutely hated the whole vasectomy storyline. Jackson not telling Sookie he hasn't had it and getting her pregnant was awful, but no one talks about how Sookie arranged for him to have surgery on HIS body and basically forced him into it. I found both instances to be very disrespectful.
    Instead, if they had developed that storyline with Sookie and Jackson communicating about it like normal adults, it could've been a nice and interesting starting point for the viewers to address those topics.
    I agree on abortion not even being mentioned as an option, but I guess it was still a big taboo when the show came out

At first, Rory was too good for Jess, but by the end of the show, Jess was too good for Rory. I think they had amazing chemistry (they were together irl during the show) thats why I loved them together bc it felt real. I really think they are soul mates but met at the wrong time. It would be different if they met as adults. Rory should have said yes to Logan. As for Dean, I hated him when he treated Lindsey really bad about her finding his phone it was so toxic and mean. I probably aged about 20 years before Lorelai and Luke got together 😂
    Logan is annoying though - mainly because even though Rory’s downfall is totally her fault but I’m just saying it all started with him and their relationship.

    I agree with a lot of these points!
    I disagree about Richard not being so bad. In my opinion he's almost worse than Emily, he's so calculated. I didn't particularly like digger, but the way he turned on and sabotaged diggers entire career was the point that I could not forgive him, and I don't think lorelai should have either. It was weird the way she took Richard's side when what he did was so awful. Like he didn't just betray him in one deal or something, he literally ruined his reputation and attempted to ruin his entire career. It was vile.
    I have such a love hate relationship with the revival. I absolutely love Emily's character development, but she's literally the only one that develops at all(maybe jess?). I also think people don't discuss how much they ruined Logans character. He had some of the best development of any character throughout the main series, and then they just like, took it all back and had him in an unhappy engagement, cheating on his fiance, and working for his father? They literally like disregarded every single thing he learned and grew from in the main series?? Logan and rory had such great chemistry and balanced each other so well. I will die on that hill. I grew to like Jess more as the series went on, I hated him at first, but I also don't think it was fair that you hardly got to see his development at all since going to California, or new york, or philly. Like come on he can't just leave and then come back a few seasons later like he's all better now he's a good guy. I wanted to see them give him the same development we got to see from Logan. My final point is that they made both rory and lorelai like, so much meaner in the revival and it was just really off putting to me. Like I get that their bitter or whatever, and had the capacity to be judgemental in the original show, but it was so blatant and frankly cringe and unnecessary. I get that they're flawed characters but why would you want to make your main characters so outwardly awful and unlikable? It was such a weird choice.
    I could keep going but this is already way too long so I'll stop here lol

      @sophiaizzy Ya I get you. I actually felt they had strong physical chemistry but neither one of them truly loved the other character. To me it was more they wanted what the other person had. Rory had money, prestige, love and admiration, her future was bright and stable. While Jess had defiance against societal pressures, he was an adventurer he would just go and do whatever he felt like and he probably wanted a brighter future and more stability like rori. Also to be respected. I think also while Luke may have provided some of that, I think sometimes in jess's mind is was just another adult forced to take care of him who didn't really want him and who he would ultimately fail.
