I put a Double DIN in my 1999 XJ. I didn't put in any cameras, because i didn't need them. That is why I have solid steel Bumpers and skid plates. Frame stiffeners are next. I used the Sony stereo.
I did this exact same setup and spent two days trying to get the camera to work. Just kept saying no video. Finally figured out that the power for the camera from the radio wasn’t working. Any suggestions on where else I can get the power to the camera from?
If you’re talking about a back up camera (I did a front one later on), here is what I did: if the camera comes on just by pushing the button to activate it then it is getting power from the radios power source. However you want it to come on when backing up, thus I also ran a wire tied into the reverse lights and back into the radio. That way when it went into reverse it would automatically kick on the camera. So there are two power sources for the camera (first is the little red wire attached to the camera cable and tided into the power for the radio and the second was an additional wire ran to reverse light and attacked to the pink wire of the harness) video describes this time mark: 14:10 I hope that helps and is what you’re looking for. Let me know if you have further questions. Thanks for watching 👍
@@alongcameajeep I tested the wire coming out of the radio labeled rear camera + and nothing showed up on the volt meter. Do you know another way I can get power to the camera?
Be sure that when you tested the wire that you were also in the camera app on the radio so that the unit sends power to that wire. Assuming you did that already and that your radio already has power to it in general, are you trying to get the camera to activate just by the app alone or are you trying to activate it when going in reverse? If your wanting power to the camera just for the app than the red wire from the camera cable goes to the radio power supply wire or the ignition accessory wire on the harness (the latter being what I did). If your wanting it to activate when going in reverse then that is supplied by a second wire running from your reverse light power back to the radio and attaches to the pink accessory wire coming out from the harness. In either case there should be power available to your camera. Now I did personally have an issue with my front camera where it would not activate at all and it turned out to be a bad camera, thus if the above does not activate your camera it could possible by a bad camera. Not sure if you have another way to check to be sure. Just out of curiosity what was your camera - doing? Maybe check that. Also another note is that the directions that came with the radio, although a little poor feeling initially, did make sense once I read through them multiple times and compared it to things I tried. And one final thought, I think I had to go into the setting of the radio and dig through them to find the spot that had me toggle on the activation of the camera so be sure to look for that assuming the OS is still the same for your unit since mine is now going on at least 3 years old.
Hey thanks for reaching out, great question. I feel it has held up really well and I have had only small issues that were not actually related to the unit I believe but rather a power issues from a bad battery. It connects really well to my iPhone automatically whenever I start the Jeep and I really like the layout of options for the Carplay. Additionally, the regular onboard operating systems sees to be just fine with the ability to add countless number of apps through Google Play store. Additionally, the ability for front and back cameras is awesome. There are two things that I would share as regards what I don't like about the unit and they are as follows (note not a deal breaker on any of them for me but rather I wish for better/more options) The first is this, I wish that it could or would connect to multiply phones with maybe an option to choose which it will pull Carplay from. This is because when my wife drives the Jeep and I am not with her she wants to connect of course and in order to do that it sort of disconnects from mine making me have to do the reconnect process again, which is not difficult you just plug in the phone with the provided cord and accept the connect on your phone. Newer systems give you options to switch between devices. The second is this, there is a button that lets you change the brightness of the screen so that it can be brighter in the day and darker at night. It gives you three options and I have found that option 1 is for night and option 3 is for day. However, I actually wish it was a slider to be able to adjust it better and more refined. Now both of those are like I said personal preference and so may not be an issue for you. I would be curious if there is a newer version with better/more options but in all I have loved it and for the price I don't think paying more is worth it. Jeep's are not really known for great sounding speakers so if you liking for a killer sound system I don't know because I am still using the speakers it came with. However, if you looking to use it like I do,: CarPlay and front/back cameras for off-roading, then I think it is still a great unit. I hope that helps and if you have anymore questions let me know.
I wanted to see what cutting tool you used to cut the piece out so the screen would fit? We installed a back up camera on our truck ( it has lots of other gages). Well actually our mechanics at the Chevron station installed it for us. Really nice to have that.
Sorry for missing this question. I ran a wire back to the reverse lights so that when the Jeep naturally activates the reverse lights when shifted into reverse it would activate the reverse camera. If I remember correctly, on my wiring harness from the radio there was a wire labeled 'accessory' (I think it was pink maybe yellow) that acted as the trigger wire that I attached the wire from the reverse lights to. And to the same 'accessory' I also wired the camera power wire that comes off the video connector wire. It hangs off the video cable when you plug it into the back of the radio. I hope that helps and makes some sore of sense.
Great question. Honest answer is I’m not sure. I do know that the new cover dash panel that has the opening designed for this mod only comes in the 7inch size at least at the time I did this. So if you going larger then you might have to modify your existing dash cover for it to work. If you’re going smaller you probably can find a shroud that will fill the gap of the dash panel I used. As far as room behind inside to fit a larger screen, there is some. Probably could do an 8 inch as long as there are 8 inch ones and it is flat like mine was. I hope that helps and thanks for watching.
did you have to buy a wiring kit with this, because I watched another review with a different brand of radio and they linked a wiring kit they had to buy.
Great question. No mine had an older version of a wiring harness in it from an older pioneer stereo that came with the Jeep. It was actually the original wiring harness from the factory radio just wired to the pioneer harness. Thus, I cut off the pioneer side of the harness and matched the wires from the original factory radio to the wires of the new harness that came with my new radio. Therefore, what you will need depends on what is already existing according to whatever kind of vehicle your putting it in. I hope that give you an idea. Oh and the radio I bought had the wiring harness with open wires which is why you saw me soldering wires.
Thanks for watching and I too felt the audio was a hindered by the mask, something I will keep in mind for future content. Thank you for sharing and helping me improve.
OMG yes, wtf mask wearing while alone in your own car , and before I even read his reply to you, no there isn't enough dust or debris in your car to warrant a mask.
The radio turned out nice I like the size of it. Good thing your dad was able to help you figure out all those wires and has all the tools. 😂👍🧐
Oh yeah, the wiring would have stumped me for days. 😂
Cool project! I want to do something similar with my truck. I think the one I had found was called trail vision. Maybe someday :)

@@alongcameajeep so if I want it to activate while in reverse and be able to view it in the app which wire would I connect to the reverse light?
Hey I’m curious how that stereo held up? I like that one since you don’t have to cut into the ac. Thanks.

I used an oscillating multi tool which worked perfectly to cut the duct nice and even without harming other components.
@@alongcameajeep I have one of those tools. I have Makita. That would work
That would work great 👍
Where did you find the reverse trigger wire? And what did you connect that yellow wire to for constant power for reverse?
Sorry for missing this question. I ran a wire back to the reverse lights so that when the Jeep naturally activates the reverse lights when shifted into reverse it would activate the reverse camera. Do only 7in screens fit into that console chassis?

Hi where is everything from ? Do you have the links to purchase ?
I just updated the video description with links for the items used. Hope this helps!
