Such a kick-ass pedal, Brian. I'm not sure I hear a difference though. Maybe if I heard them on the same amp, right next to each other. I just know that the original Tumnus is the ONLY OD-esq pedal on my board. These days the less I have on my pedal board the better. I just want to plug-in and play. Amps today are made so well, that this pedal is all I need to accomplish the tones I love. You've not only nailed the original Klon tones, or made them better (IMO) but made it affordable. You did the same with the Ratsbane (which I'll use periodically, as well). Made both pedals more applicable to todays amps which are more refined than ever. Such a joy to use your gear. It's easy to use, and you were genuine enough to price it to where us mere mortals can purchase one. We're all grateful for that. Now I'm looking for something to replace my Collider reverb/delay, which sounds phenomenal, but I spend more time f**king around with buttons and software than I do playing. Got a solution for that!? Thanks for sharing, looks like a fantastic pedal. If I can find a video showing a significant difference from my original I'll definitely pick one up.

Not necessarily the same things I play, but things that are played really good. Of course your explanations of circuits are top notch. OK, I go from Tumnus Ge into
    ODR-1 in the Stomp.
I dont care for the regular Klon because it rolls off too much low frequencies.
It is the most amazing sound I have ever played,
    I am not kidding.
The Tumnus has way more harmonic content than the regular Tumnus.
It also has a harmonic "cluck" and a high frequency sheen on the attack that I have heard on legendary records.
The HX Stomp seems to deal well with the output of the Tumnus.
I have not used the Tumnus in the effects loop on the Stomp because its too much of a hassle, lol...
Did I mention that thee Ge Tumnus is going for 600$ on Reverb?

  • @DYFLProductions
    @DYFLProductions 6 месяцев назад +4

Eugh, just sounds gorgeous. Pushing and controlling a good tube amp's natural gain is so much better. A good Klone pedal now like this is just as good as any Klon. Wish I'd got the Germanium when it was released now, but I guess the regular Tumnus is close enough! I notice people often don't realize that these pedals react differently through different amplifiers. A good tube amp will show off the circuit's capabilities a lot better than a solid state or something.

To be perfectly honest (I'll probably catch a lot of 💩 for this), I never understood the hype around Klons or Dumbles. They do sound great, but I don't think their sound is superior enough to justify their price point. Of course, it's truly impossible to quantify how good something sounds since the whole premise is rooted i. one's own perspective.
Don't get me wrong, Brian, your pedal sounds amazing and is far more reasonably priced than the Klon, and if I were in the market for an overdrive pedal, this would definitely scratch that itch. I just don't get it. I've tried to see where people are coming from, but the appeal eludes me.

  • @recklesstoboggan

    Ordered. This pedal sounds great!
I had an early Tumnus Deluxe (the OG graphic with the Tumnus standing under the lamp post) and it was one of my favorite pedals, but I gave it to a friend as a gift to help them get started with playing guitar. And I've regretted it ever since. And my friend does NOT want to give it back. 😂
So I'm very happy you've done this one. I've been waiting for a long long while to get another Tumnus, and this is the one.

Just got mine today. I have compared it against an original mini Tumnus, a Klon KTR and a Mythos Mjolnir. The germanium Tumnus has more presence overall. I was running the gain at 1 o'clock or higher. I played it on a Supro Black Magick, a Z Wreck Jr. and a PRS HDRX 20. I really like it on the HDRX 20, which is a darker amp than the others. I was only using humbuckers, so I need to try some P-90's and single coils with it.

I need to add a comment. I got an email this afternoon as a subscriber to the Wampler Pedals newsletter. It started with an apology from Brian. Apparently the Anderton’s video on this pedal came out early and demand was far beyond what Brian expected. Therefore, newsletter subscribers didn’t get an early shot at getting the pedal. By the time I watched this video, they were all gone.

I always thought the very best ad for the Klon Centaur - not that Bill ever really ran many - was one that appeared in Vintage Guitar, where the customer said "It sounds like my amp...only bigger".
As far as the "magical" diodes are concerned, I'm somewhat agnostic. Far too much credence is given to the behavior of the diodes, when much of what makes this vs that diode different has to do with how they behave in high-frequency switching situation. Taking 80 vs 120 nanoseconds to conduct was probably quite meaningful to designing corporate telephone switching systems, but moot in the context of guitars having maybe 6khz bandwidth on a good day with new strings and the wind at your back.
In the case of the Klon, however, the Gain control affects about 4 different things at once, and one of them is the balance between clipped and clean signal. Since the diodes set a maximum level of the clipped signal, the *particular* forward voltage of the diodes Bill selected, had an impact on what the clipped-to-clean balance would be at any Gain setting. I am of the belief that any of a variety of other diodes could be used in place of the germanium ones, *BUT* other components, and maybe even the Gain-pot taper, would have to be changed in order to arrive at the same clipped-to-clean balance at any Gain setting. Of course, if Bill had adopted that strategy, and NOT simply insisted on using THESE particular diodes, the wait time for each build having to be tailored to meet a given sonic goal, would have been much longer than the anticipated 11 weeks. So, the magic is not in the diodes. Rather, sticking with the diodes you know allows for the rest of the circuit to behave as intended, without having to tweak anything else.

Thats how I play and over the decades I've got to where I can't get a bad sound out of the instrument, I'm not alone, its just practice and listening as much as playing. Its so fine to see someone from a different musical background play, your country chops are killer good and influence everything else you play, everything has that warm happy overtone!

We won’t allow back orders if we don’t have the parts for it, we have a very tight part accounting system, so there’s no risk of selling a pedal that we can’t fulfill

Germanium is where it's at, or so my ears are telling me. I personally think this sounds smoother than the original Tumnus. May have to grab this one.

Klons, original or clones……. PLEASE stop already? The world is overdue for something fresh and innovative. Please, please stop. The horse is already dead. Please stop.

You can make it stop. Just manufacture a new contemporary classic pedal that everyone wants to copy, and then they'll move off the klones and onto yours!

The non-Ge Tumnus was my favorite drive pedal I’ve ever used.
This one is even better!! It’s never leaving my board.
And an unexpected bonus…the two Tumnuses (Tumni?) pair/stack surprisingly well! 🤘🏻

Sad that you’ve decided to limited only. Now, most of the buyers bought your pedal and resell it for a higher price. Wondering now if those buyers are all guitar players or just making more money out of your work. We middle class ones want to have your pedal as well…

I understand. However, the diodes it uses are not available anymore. I understand that it sucks, but it’s out of my hands. We didn’t gouge people, others are. It was limited because of the reasons mentioned in the video. That explains it.

I made a joke on a channel a few months back about Brian being asked by Bill Finnigan to stop making the first Tumnus and take the Centaur off cause it was and exact copy LOL . Then Dutch Pete on Andertons picks the Tumnus in a KLON shootout . And then you released this right after JHS released their Lazy Klon LOL . They're sold out , the scalpers are all over reverb . Hell ya brother ! I have both the first Tumnus and Deluxe . I also have a Klon KTR that I bought for $380 . I like the Tumnus' because they have more tonal control .

The amount of information the internet on how circuits work and how they can be replicated, you would think people would wake up and realize an original Klon vs all the amazing pedals out today replicating it sound extremely close (arguably can’t tell the difference) and equally amazing, but people still pay thousands of dollars and argue on forums about how the original Klon is better and sounds night and day different from the replicas. Such a bummer!
On a positive note, guys like Brian and Josh from JHS are giving us amazing options with their awesome pedals of all types. Thanks y’all! 🙏🏻❤️
