396. Narrowboat DIY Hull Blacking - Final Part

  • Опубликовано: 25 апр 2024
  • Every three years or so, a narrowboat needs to be taken out of the water to have its hull ‘blacked’, this being necessary to preserve the steel work, particularly along the water line. I last blacked my boat in April 2021, so it’s time to be re-done. In this final episode, Sally and I finish the blacking, paint the gunwales, and tunnel stripes and get the boat put back into the water using the hydraulic trailer. This is not intended as an instructional video.

    I love to watch people work. I can do it all day. It makes me tired enough to sleep all-night. You have done a yeoman's job of it. I think the roller lays down an over worked , thinner coat than the brushes do.

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture
      @MyNarrowboatVenture  2 месяца назад

      So do I, that's why I had Sally with me! Brushes do apply more paint but then, if' it's too thick it will run, so many thinner coats are better but it's all a matter of time available to get the job done.

    Brushing always gives you better coverage than a roller but a roller is a good way to get the paint onto what you are painting. Can I suggest using a three inch bush, if you are feeling extravagant, the best brush to use is an acrylic Purdy brand, picks up more paint and leaves a really good finish, they make painting almost a pleasure, and so much faster, and less chance of of dips because of fewer tin to narrowboat movements. Also having a wider brush apart from picking up 50% more paint each time it also makes cutting in the edges so much easier. Keep eating the cheese topped rolls, haven't seen you eating one recently!

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture
      @MyNarrowboatVenture  2 месяца назад

      I agree with all you say but the gunwales are so easily marked when cruising that the prep and application is less important. A jagged piece of Armco will always win! I have been thinking about doing a better job on the sides than previously, very much as you suggest using a 3” brush. You’ll soon see that I am still eating cheese topped rolls but less often, as I can’t always get them. Cheers and thanks for the advice.

    Hi Alan & Sally! Well done for gettoing the job done, despite the setbacks. This is not a criticism, but have you watched any vlogs from Boat Time? They are a young couple on a narrowboat, who have also blacked theirs. They also blacked the base plate, which was really hard work. I know that there are two schools of thought about that (whether it needs to be done , or not), but do you know the condition of yours?

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture
      @MyNarrowboatVenture  2 месяца назад +1

      Hi Alan. I’ve already answered this query twice, so please see if you can find them, as I’m going to answer now in a different way. I wasn’t aware that Boat Time had blacked their boat. What thickness is their base plate? Most boats are 10mm base and the sides are 6mm. The base plate is less prone to rust, as it’s not open to the air, so the sides should rust first, hence the need for regular blacking. It’s not easy finding somewhere that can lift a boat high enough to get underneath it. My boat has an 8mm base plate. The surveyor recommended to get it blacked, so I did. He said it would rub off but stay in any pits. I don’t see the need to black the underside, as it’s thicker by design for a reason. I’m told my boat is built of good grade steel, I don’t get rust spots like I see on other boats, so all is well as far as I’m concerned.

    How do your arms and back feel? You've been leaning over pushing on the roller. So my dumb question - you don't black the bottom of the hull?

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture
      @MyNarrowboatVenture  2 месяца назад +1

      I felt a bit weary after it all, not specifically legs and arms. The base plate is less likely to rust, as it is fully immersed in water. The sides are more prone to rust along the water line where it's wet and exposed to the air. Base plates tend to be 10mm thick and the sides 6mm, so the sides will rust first. My base plate is 8mm.

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture
      @MyNarrowboatVenture  2 месяца назад

      Hi David, you must watch when you can. I do two coats but if there’s any blacking left I go over the water line again, so parts may get a third coat. But I don’t set out to do three coats. It was great having Sally to help, thanks for supporting the channel. Good luck with the blacking🤠

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture

      I have. I bought an extension last time I blacked the boat and it was hard work to use it, as a lot of pressure is needed to apply the bitumen and I found it more difficult reloading from the tray. Why have you left the base plate Alan?

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture
      @MyNarrowboatVenture  2 месяца назад +1

      Hi Martin, I’ve already answered this query to another viewer. It’s not usual to black the base plate, as it’s totally under water, so less likely to rust. The real concern is on the sides where the steel gets wet and dry along the water line. Also, standard base plate is 10mm thick, the sides are generally 6mm, so the sides will rust first. To put it another way, it is reflected when a boat is built. My base is only 8mm. There are very few places that can lift a boat high enough to black the underside! Hope that explains.
