Seeing Kenny Schrader walking towards his car before qualifying shows how much space he really needed after Daytona.

Dale jr statement about sterling was right on. It was hard on him and even he realized no one was at fault for his dad death.

By his statement, he meant that Sterling is like family to him and no one is going to mess with him.
2nd time identical wreck caused by sterling, suspicious still.
@@honchoryanc once again, it was a racing incident.
I've said it once and I'll say it again. Incredible channel. Anything you have from 2001, practice, quals, or whatever...please post it.
Very good point. The trauma from Daytona could have really affected Mike more than anyone could anticipate.
Especially when you listen the interviews that kyle and dale jr had with mike first of all he was clueless about what to announce but he knew he was going to have to tell everyone that he was dead.
I agree, the practices and qualifying sessions are great to go along with the races you are posting. :)
It was the main contributing factor though. He broke numerous ribs and an ankle in the accident directly from the seatbelt breaking. The skull fracture is what caused his death, and the seatbelt is what caused the skull fracture.
All of that energy traveled towards his body.
With a force of over 60G's
The broken belt didn't kill Dale.
Dale's stubborn refusal to wear a HANS device and a close-faced helmet were the main reasons he died. Dale suffered a basilar skull fracture, which is normally caused by having the driver's head move forward on impact. That sudden jerk forward when he hit the turn 4 wall, along with the exposed open-face helmet, ultimately led to his fatal injury.
de31168 was right about the seatbelt.
most drivers did not wear hans, only the pussy drivers like Burton did
downnice Jeff burton at least doesn't have brain damage from NASCAR like other people do.
0:52 to 1:03 So true!
Amen to that. Such a difficult, almost impossible time to be a driver, owner, broadcaster, official, medic or involved in any way.
I do think it was really irresponsible for Helton to be making any statement about the details of Sr.'s crash, before investigations are complete.
Wow, how different things would be if Dale was still around. Rip to the best ever.
@oldschoolnascardude1 You're welcome. Thanks for all the truck races you are putting up aswell!
37:46 According to Tony Stewart he too also saw the aftermath of Dale Sr's crash when Sr was accidentally wheeled into the same room. Tony claimed he only saw him for a second but knew immediately it was bad.
At 37:43, Mike Joy explains, perhaps A reason, why Mike Skinner's 2001 season was worse than expected. Certainly his injury at Chicago didn't help any, but his season was a mess before that. This is a guy who was 10th in 1999 and 12th in 2000; he entered Chicago 24th in the points after never sitting higher than 15th all year (after Atlanta in March).
I'm surprised that Childress stuck with Skinner as long as he did.
@@iankhan4614 Mike was poised to win a Winston Cup race before 2001; ask anyone who was covering the sport at the time. Prior to his injury and disappointing performances in 2001, RC had no reason to replace Skinner.
Actually up to this point he should have earned 8 or 9 wins.
@@iankhan4614 Explain. Blow our minds with your expertness.
Amazing I answered my own question. But at the same time, Kevin winning Atlanta and Chicagoland eventually put the pressure on Skinner to perform or find another ride. Earnhardt was also his teammate and won races and Mike didn't. This sport can be unfair because you're always measured by your teammates, especially when they're beating you. Mike had talent but he didn't have the desire and ability to keep plugging along.
26:41 the first "do it for dale"
When NASCAR still only had *ONE* loss to deal with in 2001 prior to many more losses 9/11; and that one loss between 2/18 and that tragic day for NYC was only one of *their* own, *Dale Earnhardt Sr.* 😢
6:20 Reactions from the booth about the last lap wreck at Daytona, February of 2001. I agree with Mike Joy's analysis 37:43.
38th car out is Kevin Harvick
Wow. Richard Childress says he will never run the 3 car again but Dale Earnhardt Jr ran the 3 car at Daytona, and Ty Dillion drove the 3 car in the xfinity series and now Austin Dillion currently drives the 3 car now.
The emotions were to high for Richard Childress at that time. I was surprised that they didn't skip a couple of weeks or didn't shutdown at that point. Richard has had a lot of setbacks in his career, but he's still a team owner to this day. Most team owners have sold out at this point, but he and Hendrick have found ways to still remain here.
at 1 hour it says that Todd Bodine is "Borrowing" Steve Park's Number 1. I hope he gave it back...
Unlikely. Dale had more injuries than just the skull fracture. He also suffered numerous broken ribs and a broken ankle in the accident. Had Dale worn the HANS device he very likely would have broken his neck anyway from his body moving forward so violently and his head staying i place. Not a good combination.
he also was wearing an open face helmet - they were banned immediately afterwards
@@AlonsoRules not immediately..spencer and JR wore open faced the rest of 2001…I do believe spencer wore one in 2002 as well.
@@AlonsoRules If Dale wasn't fond of the hans device, I'm surprised that he didn't want to try the 6 point device.
@@brianwells5123 both of them did in 2002. It's still amazing that the angle that Schrader's car hit the wall, that he wasn't injured or sore in any way.

They fixed it, just a mistake there.
@805motorsport No, it was proven that his seat belt did NOT lead to his death. It was a contributing factor, but not THE factor.
So true.
@805motorsport I don't think so. Belt or not, Dale was a goner.
Dave W if only the safer barrier was their too
All I can say dave is that I believe dale did everything he could to make a save by straightening his car in front of everyone to avoid wrecking, which would have a prevented a second big crash. Or he tried to find a way out of it by making the car spin around so everyone could avoid him and then keep going and take a 13th place. His mentality before the head on blow.
@@truenorthcanadian5628 After his wreck, it became a major effort to make the sport safer, which it deserved to be. It has to a continuous effort to make it better every single day.
if that belt hadnt been broken loose earnhardt wouldve lived and won like 3 more championships
Not likely. 2004 was to be his final season.
