I definitely have lots of questions about crawlspace vents. For example: (1) If the vent grid is 1/4", this is like a superhighway for insects to enter and attack everything inside, including joists, posts, etc. Shouldn't the grid be considerably tighter? (2) What is the proper amount of ventilation to provide sufficient oxygen for gas forced-air furnace combustion and chimney draw? (3) I have yet to find a vent (whether for kitchen exhaust, crawlspace aeration, or other) that comes with a positive shut-off, such as a sliding inside cover that actually stops (seals off) all air infiltration or exit. If we pay for 99% efficient furnaces, don't we want to be able to control the amount of air entering the crawlspace to make that efficiency pay off in the wintertime? Thanks for all your great construction videos. You are definitely one of the best.

I can't see cutting a hole of that size in the rim joist. That can't be right?

Maybe do a little more research, but it's been done before.
