  • This is a detailed tutorial on how to set up a Nintendo 64 (N64) Controller with your Raspberry Pi/RetroPie computer gaming system.
    For this tutorial we are using a wired usb N64 Gamepad Controller to demonstrate the most efficient and effective way to configure/map this controller on the RetroPie system.
    This configuration is a two part process in order to properly configure the N64 controller to properly play all the different console games on RetroPie.
    The card we are demonstrating this process on is the RetroPie Guy 256GB Ultimate Game Collection card for the Raspberry Pi 4 & 400 which includes over 24,000 retro video games.

    To avoid accidental Hotkey-activations (I'm using Emuelec, which has at least seven combinations by default), I have mapped the Z-Trigger to "Select" in Emulationstation. In Retroarch, I have mapped the "Hotkey enable"-button to "Start" and the "Exit emulator"-button to "Select".
    Works like a charm.

    • @RetroGamingGuy
      @RetroGamingGuy  3 года назад

      Unfortunately that's the best configuration I could get where it worked on the majority of games well. You can probably go into retroarch again and remap a little bit to find a different configuration that works for that specific game. Maybe reassigning the right trigger aiming function to another button. Likely it would need to be a different button from the triggers otherwise you'd likely load state if you just remapped to the left trigger.

    Any idea why the "b" button would've stopped working in the RetroArch gui with the n64 controller? Can navigate that menu fine with other controllers, but after the n64 controller was set up in this menu I can no longer use the "b" back function. The controller is set up fine for this emulator now, but the RetroArch gui is no longer navigable with the controller. (EDIT: the button itself works fine and works within the emulationstation menu as well as within game, just not in the RetroArch gui)
    Additionally, any idea how to setup the controller mapping for other emulators such as the "rice" variant (which often work much better than the default).

    • @RetroGamingGuy
      @RetroGamingGuy  3 года назад

      Hey there, I'm not sure why this happens. I have heard of it happening to some. I haven't experienced it personally. You may need to add a usb keyboard to navigate the retroarch menu. I believe that would enable you to navigate it but of course it is an inconvenience. Do you mean other emulators for N64 or other emulators in general? Anything N64 related should share the same mapping setup unless its an emulator that isn't connected with retroarch.

    • @MrDmonies327
      @MrDmonies327 3 года назад

      @@RetroGamingGuy Thank you. I'll see if I can navigate it with the keyboard.
      Yeah, I was specifically referring to the n64 "gles2rice" variant, as it tends to work much better than "next" (also with much better rendering). Unfortunately, the mapping is all messed up on that one and I cannot figure out how to get it mapped.

    Great video, helped significantly and fixed both Nintendo and N64 issue. Soundbites from your games are really loud to be able to hear you through the tutorial, but still figured it out but I have an important question, why on my raspberry pi 4, can I not configure the N64 controller to just N64 games and have that plugged in and also have a super Nintendo controller plugged in and be able to play my super Nintendo and regular Nintendo games and use that controller for those Consol games? Instead of using the N64 controller and having to reconfigure it every time you want to play a different Consol game, is there a way to use two separate controllers? I’ve been trying to make that happen, but have been extremely unsuccessful and frustrated because it won’t work. When both plugged in the pi only recognizes to port 1 N64 controller. Please advise if possible thanks.

    • @RetroGamingGuy

      That’s weird. It seems like something is off. Do you have other controllers setup? It sounds like it’s not distinguishing that controller from another one that’s been setup prior. Two ways to solve this. First go to main menu, then configure input and you should be able to map the n64 controller. See if that works. If not then you may need to reset all your controller configs if they are in fact out of whack.

      Unfortunately that's an issue with mapping N64 in emulation. You can't make it perfect because the N64 controller is so different from the other controllers out there. Everything else is much more straight forward. This is pretty much the best you can do to get into most of the N64 games and have them playing well. You could try customizing the mapping a little bit to try to get around this issue but you will likely end up just causing another issue elsewhere with other games. This is definitely the toughest collection/controller to get working perfectly with RetroPie.

I'm not super familiar with Donkey Kong 64 myself but I would take note of which controls you use seldom in that game or not at all and swap that x button out with whichever button you don't use much. Maybe swap the X function with another c button you don't use much or one of the shoulder buttons? Again, not familiar with the controls for that game. I don't have it myself so I'm not positive on compatibility but as for mapping if you do find it is registering properly with the raspberry pi/retropie then I would look at the video below for the button mapping portion. Don't map the shoulder button as select as you have plenty of additional buttons you can utilize in the center of your controller. Do the buttons the same way though since they're layout is the same. Use your shoulder button as shoulder buttons then use the analog sticks as you would for playstation (as they seem to be the same setup there). At the end assign one of your extra buttons in the center as your hotkey to exit games (you'll use that button along with the start button to exit games). That should do it for you. Again, I don't have this controller myself but if I did that's how I would try mapping it.

      @@andreassonnenschein1250 yeah the 3b+ has its limits. The 4 is a much better version. You can play many more games on it. If you go to our RUclips channel you can see our gameplay demos on our card with the 4. They run extremely well for even newer console games like n64, Dreamcast, and PlayStation.

    Even with this setup, start button doesn’t work when loading N64 games on my Odroid. The only controllers that work are the Super Nintendo ones that came with it. When loading a game after I’ve set up the buttons, it says on the loading screen “controller not set up.” Why?

      You either have a non compatible gamepad controller or there’s an issue with your config. Try resetting your input configs and trying again.

      @@Mylesam23 Sorry about this. That's the downside here it does alter some stuff like that but it makes the gameplay pretty good. Connect another controller or keyboard and you'd be able to access the options with that controller/keyboard. Not ideal but at least the gameplay works with the controller this way. Sometimes with RetroPie we have to utilize other controllers for settings.
