Their new album is re-recordings of the songs they did on The Sing-Off 10 years ago. I would love to see dual reactions like this for each of those songs. (Hint, hint 🙂)

Man what a difference 10 years makes! I much preferred the modern version because, as Jen mentioned, it's more chill and not so rushed and they have presented a much fuller sound, which I enjoy. Also, the modern version, ironically, sounds and feels more "classical" to me than the live version from 10 years ago. Also also, to me, the modern version doesn't sound and feel as "tryhard" as the live version from 10 years ago. This modern version, to me, sounds and feels more authentic to the true Home Free.
@@ForeverDegenerate I agree with you, but keep in mind that they can have fun with the song now, whereas ten years ago they were trying very hard to win a competition (which they did), so their arrangement was geared to that goal. Also, I think their blend sounds much better now with Adam Chance than it did with Chris Rupp. No offense intended to Chris, but that's my opinion.
@@theloneranger8725 You're not wrong about the harmonies now versus then. And, yeah, I'm well aware it was a competition. Hence why I used the term "tryhard." If you listen to the two back-to-back like Jen did, it's obvious they were going full "tryhard" for the competition when they didn't need to. Then again, that was 10 years ago and they were young and, probably, didn't realize how good they really were. Also, and maybe it's just me, but I would prefer to win a competition based on who and what I am, not who and what I present as. But... I guess a competition is all about placating the judges, right?

Yes, please…continue to do the Sing Off version along with the remake of these songs. I think it’s a genius approach because it really highlights the differences…how they’ve grown individually and as a group. (Austin had only been a full time member of Home Free for about three months when they auditioned). Also they got to slow it down when not dealing with show’s time limits. Loved your reaction…even your difficulty forming sentences 😂
Jennifer, you liked this upgrade, you haven't seen anything yet, and they do some of their goofball stuff too, it's going to BLOW you away (almost literally....you'll get that joke when you watch Life is a Highway) 🤣

Welcome to the 50s! My brother sported that hair-do - along with his white bucks and rolled-up sleeves, he was cool (still is, btw)! Home Free just can do no wrong in my opinion. Great take on a high school memory.

Thanks for the double feature. What a great remake of Roy Orbison's classic song. I remember the cover Home Free did on the "Sing Off". This new one is even more fun. Love the 50's-60's pompadour hairstyles & great outfits. Great song & video. The guys really rocked this!

Comparing the two... the second lacks just a tiny bit of the passion brought on by the competition aspect in the first, but more than made up for it in the maturity in their voices and presentation. All the second one needed was Austin serenading a blushing Jewel!

I agree! I loved their looks in The Sing Off version sooo much better! Then again, I thought Austin looked WAY better back then, with his hair shoulder-length & clean-shaven, despite being & looking younger! Definitely is just extremely handsome more clean-cut, IMO. Adam Rupp definitely looks better clean-cut rather than having long hair (not a fan of that on him), & well, Tim can get away with either! (…Mercy! LOL😊😂). Their songs are great on both, even though they switched parts up a little. I LOVED their Sing Off performance of this, but the new one is ok, but didn’t quite do it as much for me. Maybe it was the fact that I liked the more clean-cut, modern looks better, as well as Austin’s serenade? 🤷♀️A++++ for both!!!! ❤❤❤❤🔥🔥🔥🔥
@@JaimeDornanLady This is the second or third time he done it that I know of but Adam is growing his hair out to donate to a cancer patient. I love Austin's longer hair but like the beard better when it was very short and trimmed. I do miss the very baby face though. And I miss Tim's longer hair.

Just an FYI…Life is a Highway has been done 3 times by HF. Once on the Sing Off and now twice recorded. This second time is more of a reimagining of their first recording, which was a reimagining of their Sing Off performance. All were great, which we all know is standard with our HF gentlemen.

Jen, when you do the review of Life is a Highway, make sure to have a fan blowing behind the camera towards you as you review. Trust me it will be a fitting tribute to their video. You will understand when you see the video. And especially if you watch the "behind the scenes" available to patrons.

So much fun. Some versions of the Sing off versions have intros that are quite enjoyable and staying on for the judges comments can be gold also .

I've always loved the late Roy Orbison's music and I think he'd have approved of their rendition of his 1964 original. Their outfits and hair styles (pompadours) befit that era. Of course, the singing, harmonies & beatboxing are perfect - they always are. Home Free are the experts at inserting an acapella break in an acapella song! Thanks for playing this & your comments.

I used to sing Acapella back in the 90's. Actually met Tim when he was with the Alley Cats. But we would change the key of the song if it allowed us to sing it well. Better to sing something the audience will enjoy rather that struggling with vocal gymnastics in order to stay on the originally key.
I think as the voice matures that they can make these changes…and they are lovely! But you notice that they have not left behind their humor. You did point out a few things that I had missed, so thank you for your keen ear.

Love listening to all your reactions videos to Home Free! You give great insight into all the vocals. I really feel like I’m learning more and more with each reaction about the technique and skill that singers and musicians sing with. It helps me to appreciate just how skilled Home Free is as a group. They just dropped a new cover song “Cruise” by Florida Georgia line. I would love to hear you do reaction video to this one!! It’s awesome!! They also sang this song as their 1st performance on the sing off as well. Thanks for all your amazing reactions!

Thanks for the great reaction, you always make me smile !!!! The new one is good, like everything Home Free does. But the live version has a life and energy that just sets it apart, I would listen to the live version before the new one. Austin voice just needed that joy and energy that the live one gives us.

I went to see them live last month and the drum solo was amazing. The whole show was a blast and I got to chat with them as well. Loved the whole experience. Xmas show would be great to attend as well😊. Also, did you see/react to their sing off with the Philharmonic? That was so much fun😊

My daughter and I were at the Jefferson City, MO concert too!
I'm assuming Kristin Denehy choreographed both versions. I remember one of them saying she's been with them since the Sing Off and I talked to one of the crew either late last year or early this year and he confirmed she's still with them. I've also heard -- and it does look like him -- that the clumsy crewman here is Jimmy Bates, their cameraman. If you're going to react to Life is a Highway 2013 Sing-Off and 2023 please note that they also did a cover of the Rascal Flatts version in 2018 filming the on the road in their tour bus, setting up for a show, on stage, and meeting their fans. Not connected with the Sing-Off other than being the same song.

I really enjoyed you doing both performances in the same video. You get to see and hear the differences in them. I really love how much more polished they are. Definitely an upgrade for this song, even though the first one was still great.

Austin passionately flirting with Jewells?!! Both were wonderful!!
On The Sing-Off performance, one of the judges Jewel had come by while they were rehearsing before the performance and gave them a tip that the song could be passed over easily unless they made it into a party or added some emotion and feeling into it, so they did both, changed it around a bit and came up with the middle part to add feeling.
I really appreciated that the remake is a hair slower than the Sing-Off version, which felt quite rushed.

I'm so glad that you did both versions. The Sing-off one was so fast it seemed unnatural. The new one is much less, um.... frenetic is the word I'm searching for, I think. And we got to see their sense of humor in the new one. Glad that you got to see them TWICE. And to make you a little jealous, I will be seeing their Christmas show. I'll let you know how it goes. As if it will be anything other than fabulous. Oh, and your growl is perfect. Maybe you can join them when they next come to London.

Suggestion: I'd love to hear your analysis of their version of Try Everything (original by Shakira, from Disney's Zootopia). Chris, Adam and Tristan Rupp are favorite singers ever! I have a Rupp siblings’ playlist. If you watch Chris Rupp Official: Home Free History series, 2001: They performed this at a talent competition. The walk up was to a pastors wife. 🤣 Episode 6 is my favorite, hysterical!
Great idea showing the original Sing-Off version before the current. There are several subtle differences in their tone, due I am sure in part to the extra quality of the studio recordinig.

I got quite a surprise seeing Austin’s (seemingly) short hair in this one after having seen his ‘Willy Nelson’ braids in Remember My Name. I thought he had lost a battle with a buzz saw.

It's very interesting. You were commenting about the "ee" vowels in the Sing-Off version, and they were bugging me. They seemed too tight, and the wrong style for the middle part. But I thought it was just Austin's country vowels.
But, no, they fixed it completely in album version. It opens up to a bit more "ih" instead of a tight "ee" for the main song, adding back that bit of "call" in the voice you get from bringing it back a bit. But when Austin sings it in the end, he instead goes with the more pop "babeh" that you expect.
I also noticed they slowed the tempo (likely due to not having the same time restraints) which I also think improved it. And they know how to mix Tim so that his solo comes out above the other voices. This and the "ee" vowel stuff are all the things I noticed in the first one, and was surprised were all fixed in the redo, as I assumed it was stylistic.
The main negative I have is that there the changes feel more dramatic in the original. The double time stands out more. The change from melody only (with Tim) to harmony on his second verse sounds much more dramatic.
However, the abruptness of the original song change I think plays better than the more dramatic cut. It feels like they knew it would sound too much the same per the above, so they had to add more.
There's just a bit too much homogeneity in the sound for the new one, and I wish they'd capture a bit more of what was in the live performance. I'd love to hear a modern live version, to see if they can get the best of both worlds.

Who can forget the pompadour hair style (not possible with out the ever essential Butch Wax hair product) Am I showing my age? I hope you got to visit the St. Louis Art Museum or the St. Louis Zoo. Both are world class with general admission being free. If not make sure to catch them the next time. Thank you for doing both Sing Off and current versions. I have always loved the guy's performances, but the amount that they have gelled over the years is quite stunning.
