    And just the helpless and utter confusion in Brady's voice. XD

    I finally found the secret of the intro music! It's binary, a low tone is a 0 and a high tone is a 1, that gives you 01101000 01101001, which translates to "hi" in ASCII

    CGP, Adblock would not exist if early internet advertising weren't so intrusive. Popups over popups over popups, half of them with unmutable sound. Flash advertisings in a era where every byte/sec lost was a precious time wasted.
    On youtube is usually cool, but every now and then some genious think it's a good idea to make a side banner with sound on mouse movement even after the normal video is playing.

    • @Thwacker71
      @Thwacker71 10 лет назад +28

      I agree. The immutable video ads that open in the corner of pages is what drove me to adblock. And unskippable YT ads twice as long as the video itself didn't help, nor the unskippable ads that fail to load altogether.

    • @markmcarthur5090
      @markmcarthur5090 10 лет назад +2

      Thwacker71 In my travels through RUclips I haven't ever found long unskippable ads, I believe the longest they are allowed to be without having a skip button appear after 5 seconds is 30 seconds. And most adverts do not use that capability, I've even seen 20 second adverts which I can skip.
      I also think that if an ad isn't managing to load on the page, the video itself would be unable to load either.

      Before I disabled adblock on youtube, I often had the add not load and the video load just fine. Even noscript is often enough as the adds load from a different domain than youtube itself. 2mdn.net seems to be the source of most of the adds. There is a very similar domain name that serves malicious content, so I blocked it for a long time.

    I wish media platforms such as RUclips would consider this - We live with physical ads all the time in real life and most of us are fine with it. Why? I believe it's because they do not hinder our immediate goals. Imagine if you're at a train station and you're required to watch an ad before the train doors would open. Even if there were a skip option after 10 seconds of the ad, I bet it would annoy you and encourage some to find a way to disable it.
    I am totally fine with content creators reading ads from their sponsors, simply because I like their voices. They know how to pace themselves and get into the ads and the products/services they talked abt are often connected to the content or themselves.
    Ads read by a third party or read too often are not good either. I don't know the psychology terms of annoying people thinking the annoyance would make them buy stuff but these two would be good examples of it.
    People will find ways to block or remove anything that annoys them. Therefore ad blockers are not going away. Media platforms such as RUclips should find ways to make ads more hindrance-free.

    • @jonathanmarhold7968

      RUclips is free, trains are not. RUclips makes money by adds, or by you paying for RUclips Red to remove adds.

    • @llgla
      @llgla 8 лет назад +7

      Jonathan Marhold
      Window shopping in malls is free. Walking on the streets is free. Ads can be found in both scenarios but they don't shove themselves in your face nor hinder your plans. The key to make more people accept ad placements is to make sure the ads don't cause annoyance and in turn people would less likely to install ad blockers.
      An alternative is to give incentives to people who would watch ads; A way to make people feel they have to collect something for a prolonged period of time (mobile games do this). It doesn't have to be real money, maybe a digital currency for some extra but meaningful customization options on the website or mini games.

    Late response, buuut. On TV, I PAY for TV. I shouldn't have to watch ads on a service that I pay for.
    However, on RUclips, I don't pay. So watching ads is fine (and thus, I don't use AdBlock).

    • @360flyby
      @360flyby 8 лет назад +6

      true but you are paying the smallest fraction possible. you basically pay the cable company and then they pay a part of that to the network. now the actual shows that you watch put a lot of money into production and it simply isn't possible to get returns on it just from the viewer hence ads let them make a good profit and we get to watch t.v. for way lesser.

  • @vipermagi5499
    @vipermagi5499 9 лет назад +11

    I use ad blocking software in the same way as C.P.G. Grey, but for notably different reasons. Firstly, commercials are a large reason I haven't watched Television in over 10 years, they ANGER me. Secondly, the tactics I find in internet advertisements is deplorable, vicious, and should be illegal in some cases, and that isn't even when talking about the ones that intentionally hack the viewers.
    If advertisements were less intrusive, I might hate them less, but then they would be less cost effective. So because the advertiser wants to do anything to maximize profits they no longer get mine.
    I do still whitelist the sites//users I want to support, but even then there are some sights I want to support but because of the nature of their advertisers I can't tolerate.

    Another thing to consider with Ads is that they take up a lot of computing power. If a webpage has 2-3 flash banners (which is the case in many times) that just murders the performance of a weaker machine.

So, we have display cabinets-like a little museum as Brady said. My husband loves posters and our rule is, if it's not good enough to spend money on a frame, trash it!

    If you hate the word trinkets, call them baubles. I believe it is a much smoother word that evokes sentimental value more effectively.
    EDIT:
    Food for thought, CGP:
    If you are disgusted by the idea of "archiving" your life, as you put it, and having to maintain space in your home for it, then if, say, in the future, some form of hyper-compact storage mechanism for three-dimensional objects becomes available, making storing mementos as easy as storing pictures, would you then collect baubles like you do pictures?
    Some important considerations:
    Physical objects carry a different weight than do pictures; pictures "describe" an event, whereas mementos both "describe" an event, insofar as what transpired can be divined from the object, and exist as a "product" of the event.
    A picture's description of events is more comprehensive in some respects than a bauble, and vice versa. For example: A picture might be able to tell a man exactly where he played catch with his father when he was younger, but the baseball they used might be able to tell him how often they played catch.
    The sentimental worth of an object is quantified differently than that of a picture. Whereas a picture is worth strictly what it depicts, for memory's sake, there is additional value in an object derived from you, the memory holder, using that object, you, the memory holder, manipulating that object, you, the memory holder, receiving that object.
    Just interested in knowing.

    Grey, Somethings don't hold their value in a photo, and won't be held in a museum. Like a hand written letter from your grandmother. It meant the world to you, she saved your life. This letter is the letter that encouraged you to not jump off that edge and to get back on the horse. Holding that in your hand, the actually letter, it has a special value.

    An alternative word for infringement is trespass. I am a US Patent attorney and just as a deed defines the metes and bounds of real property, the claims of a patent define the boundaries of your intellectual property. Someone who steps into that defined boundary is trespassing on your property. (Sorry for repeating this point, but I am new to reddit and apparently my earlier post was put somewhere else.) 2.Your statement that a computer user should be free to put whatever software he wants on his computer is obviously restricted that it be non-infringing software. 3.The economic model that describes the minimal impact of an individual yet, in the aggregate is destructive is, "The tragedy of the commons". 4. I too use a list for my traveling needs. 5. Keep up the good work and (although I recognize the irony of the following statement) don't pay too much attention to comments. The reason that we (I) listen is because we like you as you are. -Rob S.

    It's a good point that you mention ad blockers, because I noticed that I'd left AdBlock on for RUclips. I usually turn it off for RUclips, and websites that ask nicely, or that I use frequently.
    My position is that as long as a website doesn't lose functionality due to advertisement, or that I personally find worth the inconvenience, then I'm happy to watch ads. I mostly use AdBlock to prevent viruses, especially when protecting someone else's computer; it's far more effective than anti-viral software, because most viruses span from "you're computer is missing [x], click here to install".

    If you keep ads on but click the "Skip Ad" option, does the content creator still get some ad revenue? If I knew skipping ads wasn't supporting the content creator I'd be more inclined to sit through them.

    • @boilingdown
      @boilingdown 9 лет назад +1

      the way I understand it a creator still gets revenue when you skip the ad if either half of the ad has played or 30 seconds have passed. Whichever comes first.

      +Brynn Ross As +Michael Arntz says I don't think you have to sit through the whole thing, but if you immediately skip it the created doesn't get anything. I don't know how much you have to see, Michael might be right.

    I only resorted to ad blocking software after the advertisers made the ads flash or otherwise animate, which is very distracting... and then it escalated to them running code on my machine to cover the page while their ad ran or otherwise force me to interact. If the advertisers would go back to still ads on a web page that do not force me to read it before I can proceed to the page I am trying to reach, then I will stop using ad blockers. At least on sites like RUclips you have the option to skip an ad you have already seen. I appreciate that and watch ads that I have not seen for products that are relevant to me.

    i like to hoard knowledge and my mind can get a little bit over-crowded, so i compensate by getting rid of physical things. a clear room calms me down, which is partly why i love the interior design of most traditional japanese homes - it's _very_ minimalist.
    also, less stuff means less dusting and cleaning, and most importantly, less baggage to drag you down. the faster you can evacuate, and the less stuff you have to carry, the better. plus, not buying random trinkets and other decorative paraphernalia is great for saving up $$ for useful, higher quality stuff - a new laptop maybe, or better plane tickets, an extra day in a foreign country, concert tickets, that sort of thing.
    my only weakness in this regard are books, but even then i have to have read and loved a certain book (and plan to re-read segments of it in the future) in order to buy it. aaand my computer, which is like an agglomeration of a billion stuff organized in a way only i can ever hope to navigate.

    Ads are supposed to be a company informing the consumer that their product or service exists.
    Unfortunately, we have companies like Mcdonalds, who have the ability(cash money) to flood your subconscious with commercials of the same thing "This is Mcdonalds, we sell food" which forces other companies(the ones not in your subconscious) to do the same(now they are), creating a mass ripple effect of ever increasing advertising, devaluing the Ad-Cent, and making everyone sit through 3 minute youtube ads for a 2 minute video.

    The whole ads thing on RUclips is more a YT problem. I could live with the small popups at the bottom in the past but when they started blasting unskippable ads twice or thrice the length of the actual video itself, coupled with the fact that sometimes the ad loads instants while the actual video stutters, that was the last straw.
    I do whitelist sites in Adblock that I want to support, but RUclips is just too much.

    Adblock:
    No one really thinks about the technical or aesthetical part of it. I personally can NOT keep ads on Twitch. Every ad WILL invariably break my player. After the ad is done, the player will be grey, I can hear the streamer but I can't see anything so I have to reload the page which then loads the initial ad that streams have which then breaks my player again. I CAN'T keep ads on because then I can't watch the streams.
    Aesthetically, many sites have quite obtrusive ads. Pop-ups, banners that cover parts of the content, loud ads, animated ads, etc. I don't want to see that.
    I use adblock plus as follows: It's off and then if I go to a site and it's horribly desfigured or broken, I will turn it on for that site.

    Moscow Metro has no advertisement on stations but a lot of advertisement inside trains. However ticket price is much cheaper than everywhere in Europe compared to average local salary as far as I remember.

    As for ad-blocking, I do think that not have to watch advertisement should be the default at the moment it is the opposite. Make your argument for support and let the users decide if they want to use their life time which is the real payment here to support your life ( pre-rolled ads on the videos). There also must be different way to support efforts like youtube without the need of getting advertised to even more.

    Wait, so if say we are uni students, too poor for Subable, but still wanting to support our favorite RUclipsrs, does clicking random adds on the channel help?
    Also, I don't understand why advertisements are so unanimously considered bad. Some commercials can be quite entertaining. I know you mentioned their utility at the end, but some ads are pretty or funny too.

    in my case, I use ad blocking software on my computer, but I also watch about 2/3 of the videos that I watch on a mobile device where there is no ad blocking software available, so for me that justifies my use of ad blocking software on my computer

    It sounded like you guys were talking about Brady's "bible deck" channel. Now that can't be right, can it?
    About ads: Grey's dilemma exists, it seems to me, because he's looking for a simple one-size-fits-all answer, and he knows that's not possible, but feels it OUGHT to be possible. Deducing categorical imperatives from flawlessly consistent, true first principles simply doesn't work (not usually, anyhow); it's bad philosophically. There's every reason to expect that many, if not most, ethical truths must account for context. In the case of ads, look at the cultural situation: we are all of us used to thinking of ads as shameless attempts to control our thoughts, emotions, and behavior through means that are dishonest and manipulative. There's a big difference between you reading an ad for Square Space (if you really believe what you're saying, and treat your listeners with respect) and the sort of thing every giant (and nearly every small) corporation does when they want to sell us crap we don't want or need. AdBlock's success is the response of consumers disgusted at being abused on the internet. It's as simple as that. If advertisers had a sense of restraint, decency, and respect for their customers -- as google did when they first started using small, unobtrusive ads -- then the "very existence" of the internet would not be threatened by services like AdBlock. And let's be honest: just because ads are so prevalent as a funding source now, that doesn't mean it HAD to be that way. Assuming there was no practical alternative shows a lack of imagination.

    As someone who just recently moved to Japan, I can say... Avoid public restrooms unless you desperately need it. They are basically holes in the ground with small footholds to bend down.
    Anyone who is interested in japan, but not interested in a Tokyo sized density I Would check out Nagoya. In area the city is much bigger than NYC but a little smaller in population. There are tons of greenery and lots of English translations and lots more Romaji(where they spell words phonetically with roman characters).

    I was about to say that the public spaces (i.e. roads) would be payed for the advertisements, not the buildings, since the road traffic is much more valuable than store traffic, but I just remembered that the buildings billboards are generally put are owned by businesses, not the public utilities that go past.
    Just putting this here on the off chance someone about to make the mistake I almost did sees it.

    I disagree with Grey's explanation for his stance on adblock software. I believe every consumer, every internet user, should have control over their internet experience. We should be able to choose which advertisements we want to be subjected to, just like we have the choice to skip over commercials or sit through them. Grey, you even use adblock and choose for yourself which sites you whitelist. Adblock software blocks malicious advertising as well.

    I found this episode, and all the other ones about piracy, very amusing. I really liked the discussion where you compared stealing, infringement and ads. Especially since you are content providers. But I couldn't stand the boiled down argument (paraphrasing): "Ads are great and makes the internet a better place." No, it doesn't! We recognize ads as a necessary evil.
    In a world where information is everything and the space for its delivery is at a premium, an information consumer really doesn't need the additional noise of ads.

    Grey clearly has very strong OCD tendencies. It's well known that people like that tend to purge belongings. I can understand the rational behind it but I do keep some meaningful things and not everything I have is super useful.
    I use adblock. I don't really feel bad about it either, even though in small part I hurt some content creators I feel as the benefits outweigh the problems considering that I spend as much time if not more on the net they say cgp grey. I don't particularly like the idea of a computer algorithm knowing so much about me that it can target ads towards me. In some cases I've made an effort to support a content creator outside of ad revenue either via a twitch sub, patreon etc.

    On the topic of adblocking software from the preservative as a software developer and computer enthusiast. I personally use adblocking software. I have no problems with advertisements and would be happy to see them. However, outside of Google Adsense network, there are many malicious use of advertisements in the attempt to spreading viruses and malware through social engineering. For example, you'll often see fake download or play buttons on screens with downloads and videos. I suspect the majority of malicious software being spread can be attributed to these false or misleading advertisements. For this reason, I always encourage the use of adblocking software especially to those that are not computer savy.
    Other note, I am completely with Grey on being an anti-hoarder! I just wish I could get those around me to be the same way. But people seem to have a sentimental attachment to physical objects which I will never understand. Anyway, if I tried to pack the sink and kitchen as "digital nomad", I couldn't ever live the way I do.

    Paying a membership fee to watch videos is not the same business model as ads. With ads you pay about one to two cents of your attention per ad. With a membership fee you pay 13€ a month and you better get in your 1300 Videos to get your money's worth. It's the old MMO subscription thing where you're like "I paid for it, so I better play to get my money's worth, even if I don't want to this month".
    An adequate comparison would be if you had an account on the website, then you put money into it and for each video you watch you'd pay one cent per ten minutes watched (and once you watched a segment you can freely watch it again two times within the next two days without paying again). Where you'd be "yeah, I'd pay two cents to watch that CGPGrey video, sure".

    The Problem with the search for a new phrase is that there are so man different sorts of copyright-infringement. I can only come up 2 terms but they only cover some parts:
    Citation-Scamming (the one affecting you guys the most)
    Freegrabbing (like grabbing more than booting)
