The "mailbox call of the void" made me laugh so much cuz while it was a wrong example, it made me think of someone seeing a mailbox and going "I could put a letter there, and no one would know".
I get "the call of the post box" when putting library books in the return bin, since they have that drawer thing like the post boxes do. It just feels so permanent - if I left something inside the book, if I'm returning it to the wrong library, if I put the wrong disk (or no disk) back in the DVD case, once I close that drawer, it's gone
I can see the whole "Well if I switch one thing away from Apple, I have to switch everything away from Apple, and that is a large chunk of time and money that I don't want to spend," argument. However, once you switch away from, the choices become much more open. Apple makes sure that only other Apple things can sync up together, so that they force you into buying only their hardware. Meanwhile, if you have a Windows or Linux NAS, you can connect with nearly any smartphone, and any Windows/Linux tablet. If Samsung keeps making phones that don't appeal to you, you can switch to a 1+, Lenovo/Motorola, Huawei (if you trust them), LG, etc. phone, without switching the NAS or tablet. The same statement goes for if you want to switch/upgrade the NAS or tablet. In the case of the NAS, you could build your own, you truly want customizability. The only time you would have to switch up the entire setup would be if you went back to Apple. To me, that freedom of being able to switch whatever brand I want in the future, minus Apple (which is way too anti-consumer for me to want to switch to anyway), significantly outweighs the cost of having to switch the entire setup away from Apple one time. If Grey wants to stay on Apple, he can, but the fussiness he has with Apple products seems so immature to me. It would be one thing if he treated his customization complaints as minor annoyances, but he goes on ad nauseam about his complaints, where you think he would want to switch away, then gets defensive when anyone suggests switching, and belittles you for caring. Don't get me wrong, I like Grey a lot, but he can be way too stubborn at times.
Speaking about the Phone-wallet combination. I don't think Grey realises that many people these days only bring with them one or two cards, and a minimal amount of bills/receipts. My mobile cover add very little thickness to it's bulk because I don't need a lot of wallet space. I have my bank card, student ID, and insurance. I don't use physical money any more, there is no reason. I don't collect receipts either unless it's something important or expensive. To me my phone sleeve/wallet is therefore the best of both worlds as it protects my phone while letting me keep my cards protected without having a huge wallet as well.
Being new to this kind of concept but would revealing this information be considered proprietary information? As in stuff they don't want the general populace knowing?
There is a problem with "live" television. Many times when they say that it's live, it is really taped delayed for those of us on the West Coast. This goes for shows like "Saturday Night Live" and "Dancing with the Stars."
I understand that changing from apple to Android is a big project, and not worth it to you. But the advantage with Android is that when you have an android you can switch between different android phones without the hassle you mentioned. Because that's one of the values that Android is built on. Supporting Android would therefore help others not having to deal with the problem you mentioned. Unless you want to move back to Apple of course, but some Android phones are becoming very similar to how Apple phones look and work lately, so I'm not sure the advantage of doing that would be..
Haiiry Cake I think Grey's point is that at the time he chose an OS Apple's iOS was better to him, so he just stuck with it. Now it takes too much effort to change. Which makes sense. I'm an Android phone user (Samsung Note 4), even if Apple came out with an iPhone 7+ with the same spec as the same generation Android phablet, I'll still stick with Android. It's not worth the effort to relearn everything.
+awdrifter3 Indeed. There have been some Windows phones I actually liked, and there are things I like about that interface, but I have SO many apps and games bought for Android that I can't see switching. It helps that there's usually some 'droid out there I like(have a Note 3 right now).
Let's be honest, Grey's loyalty to Apple is almost autistic. He's been polishing his favorite apps for years now. He will switch maybe when apple throws all of his favorite stuff away.
The Mac vs Android debate reminds me of what scientific calculator to use when I was in college: HP (Hewlett-Packard) vs TI (Texas Instruments). Reverse Polish Notation vs Algebraic Notation.
RPN all the way. It takes a while to get used to it, but its really hard to change back. I have a HP12C (Financial calculator) and I forgot how to use a regular calculator after 3 years with the 12C.
I think the "call of the post box" though is not at all the same as the "call of the void" - it's more like the opposite. I may be alone in this, but I would compare the call of the void to the feeling of wanting to run down a fancy (or school) hallway when no one's around. Normally, there would be someone around to stop me, and normally I don't really want to run down the hallway bc I don't like running, but when no one is there to stop me, I suddenly get the urge to try it, just bc I can. When standing at the edge of a cliff, especially if there isn't a safety rail, I get that sort of feeling: There's nothing here to stop me. It would be so easy, just one little step - What stops me from jumping off the cliff is the knowledge of consequences - the knowledge that it would be a permanent decision. That idea of "permanence" or "consequences" is what they're referring to as the "call of the post box". The call of the void makes me WANT to jump off the cliff; the call of the post box is what STOPS me.

It sounds like Grey would be so much more productive on android but the fact everything he has is Apple is whats holding him back, he is all in on Apple. the cost of switching from Apple is huge. because Apple is super locked down, Android is better as some one who uses both professionally. And android or windows or linux can talk to each other and talk to apple but apple can not talk back. But everyone using apple does make regular software issues easy to fix but more complicated issues are so much easier to fix on the other platforms.
I actually get afraid my glasses will fall off my face with things like that. Like if I even am somewhere high, or looking down a long distance, I always hold on to my glasses to stop them from falling. Or on rollercoaster, I am so terrified that my glasses will fall off, but rollercoaster ae different, once I actually was riding a rollercoaster, and my glasses flew off my face and started to fall, and I somehow caught them with like 2 fingers while riding this super fast roller coaster, and I just clutched them very close to my chest for the rest of the ride and didn't put them on until I needed to get off of the rollercoaster. I literally have no clue how I managed to catch my glasses, they fell off and I was so convinced I would loose them and I like desperately reached down to grab them and somehow managed to grab them, I actually made this absolutely ridiculous looking thing out of like rubber bands to hold my glasses to my face, and it looks so dumb, but I always wear it in rollercoaster and hold them anyways too...
TL;DR most people misunderstand warrenty becuase companies use the word where they really shouldnt, what you are getting from a warrenty is a tiny bit of fringe cover, the times when it comes into play is practically never, 99% of the time in my experience any product that has failed within those 3 years of warrenty has failed as a result of misuse(overloading a tumble drying causeing the belt to break) accidental or otherwise a cause that isnt covered by warrenty. Warrenty has very little practical use in todays world othen that helping to deter the use of cheap unreliable parts in products, all you are doing when you void your warrenty is saying "i accept that i am giving up my right to a free replacement/repair of this product if it fails within X years as a result of faulty or cheap parts" by law a warrenty does not cover accidental damage, theft, anything really other than faulty parts (a cheap lcd screen that burns out after 2 weeks of use for example) some companies may sell cover for accidental damage ect and call it warrenty but in reality this isnt the same warrenty that you have by law. big companies just use the term warrenty to scare the average person into being reluctant to do the sensible thing and find a reapir shop that will likely A, have staff that are often better at performing the repair (big companies just want it good enough to shut you up while small buissnesses want you to tell your friends how awesome the repair was) and B, cost alot less, the raw cost or parts required to perform a repair on most items is a tiny amount and he big companies are the worst for inflating that price through the roof for an example look at the cost of phone screen replacement online at repair shops, then search ebay for screen replacement kits to do it yourself, the price difference is dumb when compared to the big companies repair prices, at local repair shops you are buying the replacement parts, renting the use of the proper tooling to perform the repair safely (no point trying to fix a burst pipe using masking tape, you need solder and a soldering iron) and the labor of the man doing the repair. at the big companies you are buying those same 3 things all that extra money that the big companies charge is nothing more, they certainly dont do a better job, if anything they are more likely to do a bad job. ive always hated the idea of warrenty, its no where near clear to the average person what it means. all it means is "we garentee that this product will not break during normal use within x number of years due to shoddy corner cutting in the production of this item" it typically doesnt cover anything else, drop your phone into water? well thats not normal use of a phone so its not covered and they will likely charge you to repair it, the only thing a warrenty garentues you is that if your phone breaks because the chineese import processor in it was made with crap parts and it overheated and fried itself within 2 weeks of buying it then the company that sold you that item by law (to the best of my knoledge) must repair it or prove that it was not thier fualt the part broke, they put a warrenty sticker on the phone as a way of proving that someone other than themselves had the phone open for some reason (attempted repair, jailbreaking ect) and if they can prove someone had the phone open that its reasonably easy to prove that the damage could be caused by the user and not the result of cheap parts (after all without it everyone would just open thier phone, break a part and then send it back for a new one and cheat the system) most people i know, friends family ect have always thought warrenty meant they have to help you, and if you break warrenty then they will never help you, thats not the case, they will still help, they will just charge money is all, and realisticly these days the amount of times a product breaks from cheap parts is a tiny percentage, even the worst scum companies design thier products to work perfectly for those 3 years that the warrenty covers and then 3 years and 1 day they fail. they want it to never need repairing while you are covered by warrenty since it costs them money in the form of having to repair the item, but the second the warenty ends they want the product to break so that you have to give them more money buy buying a new product. years ago when companies kept trying to get away with that sort of thing yea you wanted to keep your warrenty, but in todays world its far more harmfull for the companies name to be draged through the mud on the internet and have all that bad press than what would be saved using cheap parts.
