    I work in an elementary school (not as a teacher though). Newer teachers regularly stay until 6, 7, 8, some even 9 at night (and that's after getting to school at 7 or 8 in the morning). The amount of pressure they are under from the Administrators is soul crushing, especially when combined with the newness of the job and the fact that they themselves do not have many individual resources or lesson plans prepared/memorized). There is a definite drop in the amount of time teachers spend at work after their first year. It is practically precipitous.
    The older, more wizened of the teachers are far more relaxed and do not spend as much time at work (in fact, most put in their requisite hours and leave).
    In fact the only time I see older teachers really staying late is when something is due (like grades) or they are prepping for the big, end of the year standardized test.

    @13:20 I agree that teachers work very long hours. My parents are both grade school teachers and they always worked after school from 3-5 and then again in the evenings grading papers, lesson plans, ect. (and making their children, aka me, help them too). They also went in on the weekends to clean up or change their bulletin boards. The couple months off in the summer does really help too! Although, they started working again about 1 month before school starts with home visits, testing, and meetings.

    I kind of combine touch typing w/ hunt and peck. Since I have memorized where some of the frequently used keys are (but not the rest of the keyboard) I sometimes can go touch typing w/o looking down for a while. But, I sometimes look down anyways as a habit and to make sure I type the right keys. I usually just look down at my keyboard and type though.

    On the note of how Brady is saying that long segments on a single story that provide background information isn't as desirable I have to use John Oliver as a counterpoint. I genuinely feel that I get the most informed and significant news stories from Last Week Tonight, where a signal topic that may have been something that has been ongoing is deeply delved into. The stories that are talked about are things that the news news doesn't actually show, instead opting for the easily explained and quick headline. I think better news stories could definitely be done by using greater context and explaining stories more complexly.

    UK teachers have the highest pay and longest holidays in Europe. And yeah some weeks they work 60 hours, but it's a salaried job so they still get paid the weeks they do 0 hours. Swings and roundabouts...

    • @nuazak
      @nuazak 10 лет назад +3

      highest pay is a relative term, so what are you comparing it to? a CEO?
      Teachers start on about 30k and advance pretty quickly to 40k, whereupon all pay increases stop from that point until retirement. Add all that to recent inflation and teachers have been having real-terms cuts in pay by about 15%.
      so yeah, swings and roundabouts, but your average teacher wouldn't list "pay and holidays" as their motivation for going into work like, say, the average financial consultant or w/e would.

    • @sham1121
      @sham1121 10 лет назад +1

      Mechanical Menace my sister recently became a teacher at a new school and she spent all of her summer preparing for her class, planning lessons, organising books and resources etc. If the teachers you know spend their time deciding what they are going to do at work, whilst at the pub, they are doing it wrong.
      Its like saying that when a writer isnt actually writing his final work all he does is sit around thinking. Its a complete misconception, a god writer spends hours and days doing drafts, sometimes abstract plans of their plot etc

    I never actually learnt how to properly type, so I started off with pecking, and now I can touch-type, but I still type with 4-6 fingers instead of the usual 8-10. I can type at about 60 WPM with my 4-6 fingers, and I know that I would probably be able to type even faster if I use all ten, but I can never find time to get used to using more fingers.

    I enjoy watching the news (on occasion), until the point when it gets to be very obvious what they are going to say next. I guess it's like Grey says, pretty much just the headlines are content. This is why I like twitter. I follow the news there and just click on stories that seem to have something behind them (also I follow science magazines which I assume to be peer-reviewed and thus more acurate, if not in the conclusions, at least in the data). The daunting part is that even on twitter there gets to be a lot of irrelavancy to sift through.
    And well I guess the main reason I enjoy watching the news is to critizise it. I'm no expert at anything but I just find it obvious that it's mostly just (a) propaganda of some sort (b) fillers (c) biased, doesn't show the full story. So well yeah. But I do find that, as Brady said, there are the couple of stories that do influence society positively, wether that be by holding someone to account or by diffusing important information to people who might otherwise not be aware of it.
    And well I'd like to read the political section of the newspaper to yes, be more informed. The problem with this is that I don't understand any of it so I can't really pick it apart and figure out what might actually be true. I would appreciate different means to become more informed, but since I don't live in a developed country and since I don't know how any of it works, the news would be my place to go.
    As someone who has been on the news, as well as my sister having been on the news for similar reasons, I was not surprised by the biases it has. I was surprised that something as simple as my statement was tweaked in such a way that it conveyed something I would not have. It's not like it was a piece that mattered in any meaningful way, why did they not just put in what I said? Also, several papers got the names wrong both when it came to me and my sister, which I understand, but yeah.

    also. people are more unhappy today despite being in a much better situation.
    the reason for this unhappiness is that in western society we believe in the lie of upward socio-economic mobility. Believing this lie plus our ability to see others who have made it can make us feel very bad about how we have done in life (comparatively).

    Man, listening to these videos, I think that if Grey gets in trouble with people it's because of his speaking style. He has a tendency (esp. since his primary output is edutainment type stuff) to either come across, in tone, as A) someone speaking factually, or B) someone really hesitant to speak factually.
    Basically, it very rarely sounds like he's going "oh well this is my experience but idk," it sounds more like someone who knows everything about what they're talking about. Which is good, but also something to be aware of if you're worried about people who strongly disagree with you.

    I really really like your podcasts, but they are so long ;( I cannot concentrate for 2 hours listening to it. And when I want to watch it on the next day, than there is missing the Connection. Please think of it to make it a little shorter. @Hello Internet

    So basically Grey doesn't value the news very much. Despite all his gripes, him not following the news comes down to him not caring enough about current events that don't have long term societal effects/effects on himself.

    i love twitter, it beats Facebook by an unimaginable amount.
    And now i'm going to follow and unfollow random people until one of them asks me why i unfollowed them.
    And how many plane crush enthusiasts are there?
    i'd watch the 20 min video. i also watch most of the CGP Grey videos with a tv dinner in my lap.

      Twitter is balls, the limit is what has caused such extreme dichotomy in "debates" and made so many too god damn angry over nothing that's as big as they think :\

      Are you talking about the character limit on a message?

    • @Vicioussama
      @Vicioussama 10 лет назад

      SilverEagle XI yes, you can't have a real conversation in 140 characters each post, that leads to extreme statements that lead people to extremes and one reason GamerGate has become a shitfest. Because both sides can only say things in extremes, no nuance that is needed.

    • @silvereaglexi3888
      @silvereaglexi3888 10 лет назад

      Yeah, cause you never see extreme points of view on Facebook or other RUclips comments or other websites that don't have the cap. No matter where you look there will be people with extreme points of view no matter how many characters they have to express themselves. For example i already put my extreme view of Facebook in a RUclips comment that has unlimited characters, it is in fact the comment we are currently discussing.

    • @Vicioussama
      @Vicioussama 10 лет назад

      SilverEagle XI True, you can see those extreme comments, but they are also often kept short. The longer posts I've seen who go into detail of why they think such a way and provide evidence, I can at least pick apart or realize why they thing that way and help em through it, if you see only a short extreme, well, you have nothing to go off of and then people usually make assumptions and, from my experience, people make the worst assumptions. Those assumptions then lead to more hate/anger.
