Appreciate your efforts finding out how to do this and then putting what you've learned into an excellent instructive video. Thank you!

Try making a cube and do thickness on the top face. That will demonstrate what the tool is for. It's name is not intuitive but the tool is good. Great video as always and thank you for sharing!

It's a good video explaining how to do it.
Unfortunately, I could not get it to quite work for my intended purpose, which was to make a curved plate and then CUT it from a CYLINDER to make a recessed indentation
I was hoping there would be a simpler tool to just make a curved panel, one that I could adjust the properties of to fit to the shape of the cylinder.

Should be easy enough. If this video isn't enough head over to the forum at freecadweb.org a lot of experts there. Just post a screen shot of what you are trying to do. Make sure to post your version info as per forum rules. Without a screenshot it is hard to understand what exactly you are trying to do.

My first advice otherwise, us to make the profile of your curved panel in parts workbench / Sketcher , the you can use subtractive or additive cylinder.

The other workbenchs have far more advanced ways of dealing with curves. I try to stay in the default workbench, to help the most people.

Haha you have the same struggle with thickness tool. Yep offset is the guy here. But thickness should have offset option incorporated. More intuitive that way In my opnion

Have you ever used 123D Design? Extrude is the basic that should just work.
I hate the idea of having several workbench to do one job.
Draft, sketch and part should be one.
all these three do what you find basically in 123D Design ..
