I'm currently looking for similar tools for designing a smart phone cover. In version 0.18.3 I found the "surface workbench", which allowes you to create surfaces, defined by 2, 3 or even 4 edges. Each edge must be a single element of a sketch. B-splines must be used, to get arbitrary edge shapes.
Hey Karl, I have looked at Surfaces and it is more powerful than what I have shown here. This was an early attempt to see what could be done with just draft, as it is included by default. I was pleasantly surprised so I thought it worthy of a video. There is also a Workbench called "Curves" and a Nurbs WB that is very advanced. Let me know how you make out., and what WB you eventually choose.
Hi. Recently I watched a video of how to model a car in Solid Works. It seemed to me that it is not too difficult. But I never played with it, only freecad experience. I also tried to do that in the Freecad and it was wierd. Custom workbenches /curves and nurbs / are complex and incomplete for me. No one wants to be dumb, so I blame the Freecad😁 I want to ask, what has changed in two years? Now, could you model a car from a photo? Or freecad not capable for it?
Tracing the image is the way forward. The issue is that surface is a compound of multiple geometries. The way to work with surfaces is you intersect and trim them.
Yes, in draft WB, during an operation say a move operation, you press the keyboard key corresponding to axis to activate and pressa again to deactivate. So X if you want to restrict to x axis, for staying on a plane you make sure snap to plane is selected from draft snap tools
i am on a fixed incoms and cannot afford autocad but i want to finish my design for a roof basically the webs between octopus legs my math is exremely limited
You are a much more patient person than I am. Freecad is unusable for anything other than the most trivial of operations. And even then, it makes those trivial operations as cumbersome as can be. Frustrating.
Nice, Freecad is becoming more and more powerful.
Very nice job 👍👍👍

How would you apply a thickness to the shape?
First, you need to convert it to solid..

Glad I could help. The saying goes, better longer than not long enough! Thanks for taking the time to figure things out in FreeCAD!
Did you say you had a video showing ability to move exclusively in a plane with a key command?
Yes, in draft WB, during an operation say a move operation, you press the keyboard key corresponding to axis to activate and pressa again to deactivate. So X if you want to restrict to x axis, for staying on a plane you make sure snap to plane is selected from draft snap tools
Thanks a lot !
Muito bom!

ill try
