FreeCAD: Model curved objects: Spoon in the part workbench (Easy, beginners tutorial)

  • How to model curved objects such as a spoon in the part workbench in FreeCAD using a loft as a cutting tool to create the spoon from a series of simple side and top profiles of the spoon. This technique allows you to create curved objects with ease. The profile will be created via the sketcher workbench and the extrude and lofting will be done via the part workbench to create the shape to split the extrude apart. With a single boolean operation we will then create the spoon.

    again, a clever solution with basic steps! thank you

    There is a workaround to get the tangency constraint which comes from the definition of the B spline.
    Bezier curves (B splines) are guaranteed to be tangent at the end points with a line connecting the end point to the previous/next control point by their definition.
    You can leverage that and create a construction line between an end point and the adjacent control point and then apply tangency constraint to that control line with anything you want, which will guarantee that your B spline is tangent to the thing you want at the end of it.

    Super great share, not sure I can master these useful techniques further than just copying what you do. There was one last slice I thought you would do to make the rim of the spoon planer I think in the x-y plane.

    I love the tutorials! Definitely stretching me :-) I feel like I should be able to do a mockup of an America's Cup AC75 boat, at least the hull but am having problems. I would love to see a tutorial on how to make a 3d hull surface. thanks again for all of the tutorials they are great. 😀😃

      Thanks for the comments and the application you would use this for. Great to hear. Just to let you know I have created a video regarding your question about offsetting the profiles so they don't see the seam / faces when 3D printing, I think it was yourself that asked for it. And also going to be creating a video regarding cross sections and creating the slots for attachments allowing for profiles and supports to lock together (not sure if this was yourself) but considering you are into the RC plane building it may be useful for you so adapt for your needs.

      @@MangoJellySolutions thanks for remembering. I did make the first request, but not the second. In any case, if it is useful for designing 3d printed RC planes, I’m always interested. 🛫💺

    Thanks for the tutorial. It may be easy for you but I had to go back and delete a few times for to get it to work right. I could not get my tessellation deviation lower than 0.23 in FreeCAD ver21.1 as after that it produces a thin vertical face along the spoon handle on the Y minus side
    The second variation that you taught and then I could achieve the 0.1 deviation w/o a problem. My spoon looks like a dangerous weapon though.

    Thanks very much. The tutorials are great.
    I do have a question. By sketching only half of the spoon you create a point at both ends. That you use as a reference point later on. Can you do the same if you sketch the whole spoon? In other words can you make a reference point to a (part of a) circle, line, arc and use constrain coincident? Thanks very much.

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  Год назад +1

      Great to hear your liking the tutorials. So there are two ways of making such point. There is a split tool in the sketcher which adds another point but you would have to add additional constraints as you now have two pieces of geometry linked together. Or you can use the sketcher point. The point is automatically placed as construction geometry but by clicking on the point and clicking on the construction geometry tool it will be changed out of construction mode and show up as a vertex when you exit the sketch allowing you to reference in other sketches.
