  • Learn how to create a 3D Elephant pen holder in FreeCAD but you don't need a 3D Printer. We will print this to paper and use it as a template to cut it out in card, slotting it together to make a physical object. This is a beginner craft project in which we will learn how to use FreeCAD Part Design Workbench to model each part using multi-body modelling along with subshape binders and part design clones and then learn how to export this out either for 3D Printing or for normal paper-based print. We will convert the 3D object into a 2D form and print as a template. Learn basic sketcher WB skills to create the sketch for the interlocking parts and draft workbench skills to manipulate and flatten into a 2D object unwrapping each body as a flat 2D shape to be compatible with inkscape allowing us to print and construct.

Thanks for this - it is giving me a slight change of approach to introducing FreeCAD to my (70+) generation too.

This might be one of your longer videos but there is a lot in it. I was expecting you show how to print the sketch or pad directly to a 2D printer.

Thanks for the comment, yes there was quite a lot in there and I tried to edit it down. At one point I did think that maybe I have explained this a bit to deeply especially round the sketching (I don't know, sometimes I feel I explain things to far) . I really try to keep them as short as possible but this one was a bit of a beast lol. Unfortunately I found the best way is to transfer the 2D output to inkscape for printing. You can do it from freecad with the draft workbench using the grid and print to pdf but then you will need to position all the pieces. With inkscape it's quick to drag and drop these into place and you have the options to add some colour if you so desire.
I have some short cuts and tricks with the move and rotate tools in draft so I may retry with something different as looking back it would of been nice to keep everything in freecad.
