I bet the whine was an over tighten timing belt or the alternator. I bet the cam sprocket was loose that caused the belt traveling back and forth till the cam slipped enough to bend the valves.
Did you need to change the alternator? Mine car is doing to same but only after very cold night sitting and whistling when accelerating only . When I warm up the engine a bit or when I let it idle for like 5 mins then start driving it doesn’t do the noise
I have that too in my golf 7.5 gti, sounds like turbo but i don’t think its the turbo, starts at about 1500rpm 2000 rpm and then when you let the gas off goes down
it wasn't any of the things mentioned in the post because I had already checked them because I knew them to be sources of this type of noise. What it actually was was a bent valve. Whether the lifter failed first or not, I don't know? Either way, the valve snapped and destroyed the head.

Did u had any other symptoms like loss of power, smoke, rattle?? My honda 2.2 dtec makes the same noise for couple years now, and other than noise it seems all right.
I think so too - fat hoses from turbo charger to intercooler might have a split which leaks air under pressure - in idle, pressure is not so strong as at higher rpm so whistling sound comes in higher rpm... Often it is not easy to notice the split or crack on the hose/pipe...
@ not really. Only change ive noticed is the turbo actuator doesnt really seem to move... maybe its stuck in one position.... havent tried manually pumping vacuum to see what it does

It’s probably your turbo on its way out, if you floor it and get a whoooooo when you dip the clutch to change gear, that’s unfortunately the turbo about to blow. It may take weeks or months before it blows, but it will blow, I recommend you change it before it blows, because it’s happened to me a couple of times in different cars,sometimes throttle gets stuck on and it will pour white smoke out exhaust,afterwards I tried to repair with a new turbo and it just poured with smoke when it was fitted,sometimes you can change the turbo and it will be fixed.tdi golfs remapped cannot Handle extra power , or any seat Audi vw tdi all have basically same engine same problem. What happened anyway?? You’re comment was a few months ago??
It is the sound coming from the dpf, dpf is in the regeneration process or maybe it is stuck and needs to be replaced or to be thrown away :) Had the same problem with my toyota D4D, after the investigation i have found out about the dpf and egr valve.
My Ford Galaxy TDI (VW engine) which got 220,000 miles on the clock. And it just started doing this whistling noise. I don't know why its doing this, hope it isn't serious :(

Alternator Mine did the same thing and that fixed it does it match the RPMs revving meaning when youAccelerate it gets louder until it shifts gears

Most TDI cars have a whistle. It's when the injector pump kicks in

It whistles cuz it's a turbo. The injector pump is on when the cars running. Doesn't kick on and off

try the hoses goin to the intercooler, mine is making that exact noise. check for split or broken hoses or air leaks.

aztectatt if its a boost leak the noise would be a lot louder

@ did you check all the vacuum hoses for the turbo?

Vacuum leak
I have the same thing, my mechanic told me it's an intercooler hose leak on the bottom of the car (An o-ring)
My car Rattles as well 😮 it sounds like a skeleton whistling whilst have a wank in a biscuit tin .
Can tell you exactly what that is... The EGR cooler pipe that goes to the turbo’ the gasket fail!

About to change alternator belt tensioner pulley - that might be it (brearings delaiminated)

what was the problem with whistle ? I had a same whistling , I did a reparation of turbo , but i still hear the same soud of whistle . (passat b5.5 )
have a look at the EGR, maybe a leak from there, we had the leak and repaired it with exhaust repair paste, which lasts a couple of years
