How to place papers in a collage, and how I do collage? That's what I'm demonstrating in this video. I show you the nitty gritty details of how I place paper pieces in a collage. It's a fussy process with lots of details, which may be boring for some, but helpful to others.
Collage art can be a slow process -- slow but a comfortable pace for me. It took me about two to three days to choose all my paper pieces, but that's how I do collage.
The focal point of my collage is a holiday-themed postage stamp from the UK. I use the colors (mainly red and blue) to help me choose the other paper pieces that I will collage with.

I also like to walk away and come back later to see if something needs tweaking. There's no rush and it's nice to have something to play with in my mind while I'm away from it. I also take a pic with my phone so I can see it with a different eye, and like you, I will also know how to put it back together in my preferred layout.

Yes!!! To your comment...It always helps me when I walk away from a piece of art. I always have a new and added perspective when I come back to the art piece. And yes to the phone comment. I like to take a photo of my collage layout with my phone before committing to glueing everything down. It also helps me remember where things were so I know the order I should glue them down in. I also like taking the “in process” photo because sometimes I see things in the photo I didn’t see without the camera.

I really love your collage process! It's really thoughtful. The stamp would have been 1970's or 1980's. The 1/2p on it went out of circulation in 1984 😊❤

I really enjoyed the video. You make everything look so easy and provided some really great tips. Just wondering if you can make a video that provides suggestions on how you organize your paper scraps and ephemera and how you go about selecting what you are going to use for a given collage. I think you mentioned in the video that it took several days to select the items you were going to use. I sometimes get overwhelmed completing that part of the process. Any suggestions you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I have been enjoying some of your videos having just discovered you. You are inspiring me to give collage a try with things I have in my craft room. Have you ever tried press n seal to put overtop of your collage once you have it the way you like it, and then glue it down? It will keep all the pieces together as you've laid them down. You can also reuse the press n seal many times.

Thanks Margarete! Great video! I really struggle with background and how to create a background and overlapping images and fodder in the frame. It is something that causes me great anxiety. I actually often make a masterboard. But, often I feel like my images or my focal point is just floating in the frame. I am going to try make a small collage since I often work with 5x7" or 8x10" collages. I think I might play around with a 4x6" and I am going to use a stamp that I really like as a focal point. 4" x 6" is my absolute go-to, I'm not sure why. Do you have a size that you are most comfortable in? If you tend to go for larger sizes, then maybe a smaller size like a 4x6 will make a difference some how. Less space, so fewer opportunities to keep adding more things. Good luck! Thanks for sharing your process. It’s always fun to see how artist work. I love starting with the stamp as the focal point, I have many that deserve to be focal points I just find it difficult to create a complete collage around them.
It's definitely a challenge to find the right papers that are going to compliment your postage stamp. Just be patient, I say. Keep some thing out on your desk and play with combinations until you find something that works. 👍

Thank you! No, I don't seal. I like the "naked" paper. I like the way it looks and the texture, without anything on top.

The card is 4 inches tall x 6 inches wide.
What if you do something you don’t like, for example what if you didn’t like it after you used the stamp?
You can try to remove it (a stamp for example). If it doesn't come off, collage over it with other papers. 👍🏼
Thanks for sharing your process! I love your style. My question is how do you keep each collage different. I find that I fall into a pattern or formula so my collages begin to look similar after a few.
Good question! I find that my collages have a certain aesthetic that make them look similar, too. I'm ok with that, and each collage looks slightly different because of the different papers I use. When I'm tired of that style, I will make a deliberate choice to change it.

Yes 100%. I've been watching my pieces over the years to make sure that there is no changes on the paper. So far it looks exactly the same, years later.
Do you never glue top down? Barbara from 49dragonflies does that with this kind of collages.
Hmmm. I don't know what is "top down" glueing.
@@MargareteMiller she starts with the items that are on the top layer and begins gluing them to the next layer, but she mainly glues the middle area of the items and leaves the outer edges of each piece until she is satisfied that she knows where it belongs.😅(I’m sorry-I’m falling asleep 😴 whilst texting my reply here and have to keep erasing strange stuff that “just appears before my eyes!!”Lol so if something doesn’t make sense that’s why!! )
I see... . That's an interesting idea, actually. I hope I can remember to try it so I can experiment with that technique! 💜
