Hey people, psychology student here- This video is based on ego depletion theory, which has been debunked, making the video a lot less useful than it seems for a lot of people unfortunately. I mean some of the things are accurate, but the implications of the scientific articles should be taken with a lot of grains of salt.

Tbh the tone in this video is judgmental and somewhat entitled. But don’t let the labels get to you. You know they don’t apply to you. Energy and time management still help a depressed person, though. It’s just the tone with which the information is presented.
@@queenthoria7483 That's why depression is so debilitating. The depression definitely exists, but since sometimes there's no black and white cause and you can't "snap out of it" as some think, you judge yourself too harshly and it keeps you from getting better.

Procrastination is actually the result of fear of failure, we hesitate to take a step towards our goal or whatever we want to do because we think what if I fail? What if I don't succeed in whatever I want to do? What if I make mistakes and do it wrong? You know what? By just doing it, whether you do it right or wrong, you make a step towards your goal because every failure is a teacher and it teaches you how to get better so never be afraid of failure but accept them and think of them as your teacher!

„Focus on what is important to you“ is a very good advice. Whether or not the picture of a willpower battery is scientifically accurate does not even matter. It is fact, that time and energy are limited so you have to actively decide, when to do what, instead of letting yourself get distracted and drawn away like a child. It is part of growing up. Letting go of that control for a day or two in your holidays may be very relaxing. But you have to go back to control afterwards. If you spend the whole holidays without focus, they will feel shorter and less inspiring.
This is relatable. I used to write down my long list of tasks for the week along with my personal due dates forcing myself to finish that in a day, then emd up extending and delaying more because i get too tired to even start the remaining tasks. So now i schedule 1-2 prioritized tasks well in the day then sleep good at night then continue the work frst thing in the morning the nxt day. Its a slow progress but it is still progress. Its about takings things slow and doing them well until its due. You get good rest and u get great results. It works differently to everybody. Im just sharing what worked for me. I just knew the food would be brought up. I would die if I didn't cook myself. I LOVE it, it's relaxing, and I love to experiment with food. I eat junk maybe once a month, but it never tastes as good as anything I can do myself.
Also, I find that the more I do - be it cleaning, being creative ot whatever - I get MORE willpower and energy to do more stuff.
If u read the book the "The Power of Habit" it explains how this theory has been proven wrong and how the wealthiest people in the know to control willpower to work for them.

When in actuality the experiments didnt took into account, that the person rating the cookies simply had higher bloodsugar and therefore more energy from the cookies.

This is why it's not a good idea to bother fighting against doing something. Instead just go and do something else immediately. Don't waste your will power on holding yourself back whenever you could use it to push yourself forwards in a different direction.

Good thing I found on an ADHD self-help manual is putting an alarm to ring every hour and if you realize you're doing nothing or something unproductive, you just switch activities altogether. Like you're on your computer, you realize you've been scrolling mindelessly for one hour, you turn off your computer and listen to some music or whatever. It takes effort but it can work, with time it gets wired into your brain. You can even just switch activity every hour to put a time limite and pressure your brain into thinking it's urgent. That can trigger hyperfocus.

In the 90's I saw a little documentary about the artists Gilbert and George. They showed their house and studio and in a storeroom there were a huge amount of food cans and miscellaneous supplies. Like pallets of stuff, cereal, soap, etc. All in large size. They simply said: "We buy everything we can in bulk so we don't waste time at the store and can dedicate as much time as we can in creating ".

I'll highlight things in a planner that are due the day of versus stuff I just want to get done. Biggest thing is to not beat yourself up for not being able to do all the things you want to do, however you do things.
But yeah. The video's fine when it's helpful for the people who it helps, but other than that…eh. xD

I absolutely disagree with this video. The less I do, the less I feel like doing stuff. If we are bringing pseudo science in the debate I'd rather stick with two concepts 1) momentum and 2) hard work.
The concept of this video can only be true assuming you also can majorly expand your "willpower storage" and that is done by pushing when there's no more will power left. And then the body adjusts. That's how it works for me.

Kind of like that famous Navy Seal speech "If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed every morning". All about how once you accomplish one thing, you are more likely to take on the next task!
He is not saying to do less. He says to do the important things first and not wasting your decision making on unimportant things to save the important things for last.

The great Thing about Willpower is, that you need it only as long as the the habit kicks in. At this point you can move this thing later the day. Thats my Experience, especially for working out or preparing meals.

Agreed. I'm a huge proponent of making sure the things that one _needs_ to do is the same as what they _want_ to do. If one doesn't have that life they should be making a conscious effort to make their lives that way. Then it's just a matter of creating a habit pattern in order to feel the accomplishment at the end of the day, which is a high like no other.

+Martin Brombeis - Animierte Buchzusammenfassungen Completely agree. For myself, I noticed it takes roughly three months for something to become completely automatic and a new habit to be ingrained to the point it would feel weird "not doing".
After, 1-2 weeks the initial need for a deliberate mental effort fades away and it just becomes something I have to remind myself of doing for another 5-6 weeks before full automatism.
Have you noticed a similar/different time frame?

Explains why we value routines...wear uniforms, park in the same spot, etc.
I like this video. Thank you for this. As simple as it sounds, it actually gives a lot of clarity to people who are overwhelmed with daily tasks to get done and still find time for doing the things that will improve their future.
Perhaps willpower is about neural resources spent on making new connections. Once you build a habit, you've successfully established an efficient route of neural processing for a particular problem.

Money buys things that can make you happier. Like, living closer to work, means shorter commute, less time in traffic, more time relaxing, doing something you enjoy, ect.
Actually it's even simpler, when your bussiness/job etc makes you more money per hour than coocking/cleaning etc is worth to hire someone for lower to do that job. Simple economics. Also, while you have a diriver you can use your time better in the back of the car, phonecalls, emails etc. or unwind, also is safer on the backseat than front, and rich people care more about their safety/health. Is less about willpower and more about TIME, that they are buying.
i have never noticed rich people to be that much creative (according to my definition of creativity, which involves imagination). They usually apply recipes for accumulating money. And 99.9% fortunes have a crime as their root. So the difference they make is in the quality their will-power have, which involves low-morale standard, not the quantity. The 0.1% remaining are a few successful artists and imaginative engineers. And there so we can find moral flaw, like in the Edison vsTelsa episode.

So anxiety takes most my willpower 🤭 explains why I can’t physically get anything done
Best way I found against anxiety distraction is to plan your next day before going to bed. You seperate it in 2-3 hours sections and just write what you'll do at that point in time (I even write shower and meals + what meal i've going to cook), that way you have less things to stress about because you don't have to decide what to do next. Helps a lot.

Work causes anxiety me. Hence, I procrastinate, in order to avoid the anxiety. How do I get rid of the anxiety that I feel when contemplating starting work?
I have a little anxiety sometimes, when I'm tired or when I have much to do. When it happens, I like to observe what I have to do. If it looks hard, long, if someone can help me or explain to me how to begin. Then I try to start with little things, simple ones. It usually boost my self confidence because I realise that I can do it. If I want to continue, I do, but if I don't want to, I take a little break. It can be as simple as opening a window or listening to music. After, I feel like I'm more happy and calm. It makes me want to finish that thing.

I'll sum up another video i've seen related to this topic:
Our brain is divided into two basic parts, the feeling brain and the logical brain.
Imagine that each part has a "willpower bar", and depletes as you take on different tasks
or decisions. The Logical part has a finite bar which depletes over time. The Feeling part has an infinite
bar that is fueled by the release of dopamine and it's only limit is the desire to rest and sleep.
That is why for example, a heavy gamer can play a game for 16 hours straight since the game
is designed to withdraw constant releases of dopamine from the gamer's brain. whereas if he tries
to study for a test, he is mentally exhausted after an hour or less.
The key to maintaining willpower with your logical brain, is to somehow tie dopamine release to the task at hand.
For example, if you're trying to stick to a workout routine, having an "end goal body" in mind is far from enough, It's
really far ahead and it's hard to get dopamine released from imagining alone.
You'd rather want to have a well thought out healthy routine/regime that involves daily Training/Eating/(Perhaps even
healthy mind - meditation?) goals. Once you look back at your day and see that you've put a check mark on all of them,
you'll get a feeling of accomplishment accompanied by a good feeling (Dopamine release),
that should tie your dopamine release with your logical goal.
This is just one of many ways to tie dopamine to your tasks. You could put on your favorite music/have a cup of coffee
while taking on the task, or reward yourself with your favorite snack when done (You must not allow yourself these "luxuries"
outside the boundaries of the task or else they lose their effect). If you have a gaming addiction but want to
accomplish something particular, allow yourself only a certain amount of gameplay when you're done with the task. This requires
self discipline, and you should use your desire to change and grow to fuel your self discipline (Have a session of reflection on
your life, where you are, where you'll end up if you stay that way, and where you want to be in the future. You can either meditate

which is related to the task. The ideal situation is to simply enjoy what you do, but since we're not all lucky to have that,
we have to trick our primitive feeling part of the brain into doing what our Logical part knows is best for us.
I urge anyone who is struggling with laziness/addiction to look up videos on the neuropsychology behind addiction, it'll give you
a backstage look into the reason why we behave as we do and why a certain part of our brain basically controls our decisions.

I used all me willpower to think what reward I should give myself. No way I will reward myself with 1 episode of drama or surfing on the internet. That takes too long and I will call it a day.
Anyway, I go back to sleep.
I've been atending online classes seriously and somehow motivating myself to cooperate with the lectures just to not self-study afterwards,because all that willpower to foucs on learning something every lecture depletes my energy.This video is really gong to help me now,to get my priorities straight.

I finally watched this and am so grateful for it. If you take away anything from this video: you have a finite amount of willpower, so start with the heavy, important tasks first, before doing anything else.

My solution for the thinking about/preparing food in the morning would be intermittent fasting. You don't eat at all in the morning, therefore you save your willpower. Then, later in the day you can eat like a king when your willpower is low.
Except from that, it has profound health benefits.
One more thing - eating makes you lazier in following hours. Possibly affects willpower too, but I'm not sure if it drains it.

+David Tomic Thinking about your meals was merely one example out of many that derail people who are on a path. Intermittent fasts work, but not everyone will do it. More importantly, if someone (like Neil) has to focus his willpower of waking up and not eating, it could deplete the willpower you need to get important tasks done when you're at the most peak level.
The bigger goal is to remove decision making that can easily replicated or is not as important as the work you seek to complete. More importantly, Baumeister also shows the energy used for the most basic tasks also depletes your willpower.....is deciding what to eat for breakfast as important as completing the 5th chapter of your book, or finishing one of my Funnels in ClickFunnels? The answer is a resounding NO....but it's something we (as people) never considered being related.
It's now time to think about it especially if you want to accomplish anything!
***** don't know man, I haven't noticed this gratification problem at all. Maybe at first, but after a while my body adopted and I feel now that I can focus much better and that I'm more porductive.

I love how he said we can automate some of our routine. Thats why I wear the same clothes, meal prep and eat the same food, and try to do things at the same time everyday

If you are having trouble doing something that you feel that you really should do, then reward yourself for doing it. If you need to exercise but can't find the time, then reward yourself with a treat afterwards. (Just try not to eat too many calories in the treat.)

Back in highschool I used to procrastinate all my long essays etc. I will write it the night before due date and bang 100% but when I did it ahead of due date bang 90% to 80%. School was boring for me, always used to go ahead of the class just because I was bored. Sitting down for all those hours is freaking hell.
