Just discovered that this was a thing. I’m gonna have to order this vinyl along with the Iron Fist 40th anniversary release. Criminally underrated albums
I didn't buy the Iron Fist remaster because it's my least favorite Motorhead album. I may yet get the CD version for the live content. APD is a masterpiece, IMO.
Whoever is putting these box sets together has done a magnificent job. Ace of Spades isn't even close to my favorite album but the box is stunning, so much material and background info.
From what I read and what Lemmy and others talked about 'Another perfect day'... the album tanked in 1983 because Motorhead fans were not willing to accept the change from 'Fast' Eddie Clarke to Brian 'Robbo' Robertson on guitar - it wasn't that the album was bad... it was the image that went w/ it - a guitarist in shorts and sporting a headband 😂 From the past commentary, the 'Iron Fist' album was a dud creatively because Motorhead was worn out from touring and had to be coaxed to record a new album... 'Fast' Eddie Clarke produced it, but he recalled that the material was not up to past standards... Clarke was difficult and would quit the band numerous times because of the infighting... After he quit during the tour in 1982, apparently Lemmy had enough and decided to get someone else on guitar... Brian Robertson had been fired from Thin Lizzy years prior... and Philthy (drums) wanted him in Motorhead. Fans who had seen Motorhead w/ Robertson were not happy w/ the change... but musically, Brian Robertson did write some great songs and his guitar work was miles ahead of 'Fast' Eddie Clarke... Lemmy and Philthy made sure 'Another perfect day' was still vintage Motorhead w/ plenty of attitude and heaviness. By all accounts, Motorhead was falling apart w/ drugs, infighting and alcohol... their personal lives were a mess... and that was reflected on the cover of 'Another perfect day' (Artist Joe Petagno remarked that the album cover was chaos that reflected the storm in their lives) ...but Philthy loved the artwork. It was no surprise that Brian Robertson left the band after the tour... Motorhead was just not his gig. Philthy left soon after, but not before he and Lemmy picked 2 new guitarists for Motorhead in 1984 - (the late) Mick 'Wurzel' Burston and Philip 'Zoom' Campbell. Strangely, 'Another perfect day' has since outsold 'Iron Fist' and (I think) is even more popular than 'Orgasmatron' and 'Rock n roll' today w/ Motorhead fans... Lemmy would crank out a few songs from 'Another perfect day' in Motorhead's last years.
I hadn't heard about the cover art being a reflection of the turmoil, thank you for that tidbit! And thank you for the insightful comment. The band was, indeed, in chaos. But you're right, it was musically miles ahead of its predecessor but retained the classic Motorhead sound. I saw Motorhead in 2008 (twice) and they played a song or two from APD at the second show. The crowd actually enjoyed it!
gr8 review brett - i seen them on that tour at dalymount park in dublin - it was so fucking loud - their was a biker in front of me with his fingers in his ears lol - it was like standing under concorde!! - it was painful - they played most of another perfect day - and got boo'd Off the stage - lemmy told the crowd to f off - threw his mike stand into the crowd - and walked off the stage lol brilliant - quite njoyed it tho - its a gr8 record tho - i dont lemmy ever recovered from the poor reviews it received
That's a phenomenal tale! :) The band played LOUD every time, I think they clocked in around 120 decibels when I saw them in a small club in '08. The roof nearly caved in, I think lol
