I don't have a ton of live albums from that decade, and of those I do, not all are absolute favorites. These, however, belong in every music collection!

Album Review: Terry Allen & The Panhandle Mystery Band - Smokin The Dummy & Bloodlines 2022 reissues
Aww. I've got tears in my eyes, Brett. That is the sweetest thing that anyone has ever said. I came home from 12 hours at the hospital, cleaned up, poured a sour and grabbed some chips and hummus and threw your video on the TV through my laptop. Now I have my OG "Hard Again" on the spinner. No doubt about what you said. This album tore me up when I first it years ago and it cannot be topped. I have all but the Koko Taylor and Hooker and Heat, but I'm very familiar with both artists (how could anyone not like Canned Heat?) and it's just a matter of not finding them that they are not in my collection. I can't quibble with your selection or ranking at all. When I tried to come up with my own list in my head, I kept thinking of live albums (Live and Burning, So Many Roads, the two BB and Bland albums), but these were all ones I thought of too. "Ice Pickin'" was one of the first cds I acquired upon discovering the Blues vis a vis The Allman Brothers. It blew my mind. 'Conversation with Collins' may only warrant the occasional listen, but it must be listened to. One of the most unique and jaw dropping displays of guitar ever made. And "Nothin' But the Blues" is like going 15 rounds with Marvin Hagler or something. Non stop power coming at you without reprieve. There are a few other albums I'd dd to your list (Luther Allison, Freddie King, Otis Spann), but none of yours can be replaced. It was such a rich time for the Blues and the '80s just carried the momentum along. Keep your vids going, they are very much enjoyed and appreciated. Man, this Muddy is really boiling...
The effect we've had on each others' collecting is a treasure to me, and I'm not surprised we're in agreement about Hard Again! It's the ultimate Blues album for its time, maybe of all time. And Nothin' But The Blues comes in right behind it. Choosing even a Ten Plus One was difficult. I decided to make it that way on myself by omitting live albums. More of a challenge, let me tell you! Alligator and Delmark really gave the world a much needed kick in the pants, reminding us that the Blues remained an essential force in music. And, seriously, thank God / The Universe / The Deity of Choice for Johnny Winter and his championing of Mud :)
That should be "Boogie WITH Stu."
Nice to see you back again, Brett. I know very little about original blues recordings so I enjoyed getting some education from your video. Ian Stewart was the piano player on loads of Rolling Stones albums. "Boogie for Stu" by Led Zeppelin was about him. All the best, Russell Campbell.
Thank you for the kind words, and the info! I knew I should have known, but while recording, I blanked! And I don't have editing software, everything is one take, so if there's an error, I'm happy for the right information :) I hope you check these albums out - if you're into the Stones and Zeppelin, you'll enjoy them!
My ranking for the Motörhead albums would be🤘 22. Snake Bite Love 1998 21. Hammered 2002 20. Bad Magic 2015 19. Overnight Sensation 1996 18. 1916 1991 17. The World Is Yours 2010 16. Kiss Of Death 2006 15. Aftershock 2013 14. We Are Motörhead 2000 13. Sacrifice 1995 12. Inferno 2004 11. Motörizer 2008 10. March Or Die 1992 9. Iron Fist 1982 8. Bastards 1993 7. Rock N Roll 1987 6. Orgasmatron 1986 5. Motörhead 1977 4. Another Perfect Day 1983 3. Bomber 1979 2. Overkill 1979 1. Ace Of Spades 1980
Ode to Big Blue, Don Quixote, Sit Down Young Stranger, The House You Live In, 10 Degrees & Getting Colder, Redwood Hill, I'll Tag Along, Song For A Winter's Night, Canadian Railroad Trilogy and Apology.
Nice! Some excellent deep cuts there, my friend :)
Gord was my favorite artist. Fortunately, I got to see him live in concert many times. Always magical. Once, I got to go backstage and meet him. A thrill. Incidently, I own a copy of the LP that became "If You Could Read My Mind" that has a different title. When it first came out, the title was "Sit Down Young Stranger", which is my favorite song from the album.
I'm jealous, but more than that, really happy for you as a fellow fan! I've been looking for an OG pressing of the album but they're not easily found in the record stores near my house.
1. Holy Diver (1983) 2. Mob Rules (1981) 3. Heaven and Hell (1980) 4. The Last in Line (1984) 5. Rainbow Rising (1976) 6. Dehumanizer (1992) 7. Long Live Rock 'n' Roll (1978) 8. Strange Highways (1993) 9. The Devil You Know (2009) 10. Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow (1975)
Excellent ranking, friend!
I ended up picking up Strange Highways on cd in May at a used record store in Toledo Ohio.Great album.Very underrated.
It really is! The sound and songs make me think Ronnie had some of those in his pocket for a potential Sabbath album. Some of his best "solo" work.
Absolutely bizarre "ranking!" Very simple, 3 best Ronnie James Dio records: Rainbow Rising. Heaven And Hell. Holy Diver. Shuffle them anyway you want, as long as they remain top 3. Strange Highways is NOT a very good album, doesn't deserve to be in top 10. Dehumanizer isn't bad, but nowhere near No.1 for sure. Sounds like this "ranking" is meant to upset and agitate the fans. There's no other explanation for this bizarre "reasoning."
Lol, The Devil You Know is a total GARBAGE, while Dream Evil is one of his best.
I love dehumanizer too, but that ppsition for rainbow rising is shocking
I knew I'd catch hell for it! *lol* But it's only because I'm so new to it. I only got a vinyl pressing last year and never had the CD. It's great stuff, I'm just not as familiar with it.
Got to see Warren Zevon in Chicago NYE 1988. Phenomenal show. He is sorely missed.
Great rundown this year. Things have taken on epic proportions. As for favourite tracks, that is impossible. For today, I'm going with: 5. Nobody's in Love This Year 4. Play it All Night Long 3. Hasten Down the Wind 2. Mohammed's Radio 1. Lawyers, Guns and Money These are just because that is what is sticking in my head today. I should add 'Boom Boom Mancini', but I need more time with it. Is there a bad Zevon song?
I ALMOST put Nobody's In Love This Year, it's definitely an honorable mention. Excellent choices! I've taken a lot of flack for not being a big fan of Life'll Kill Ya. Not that the songs are bad, per se, and I know it was a passion project of Warren's. But it's the only studio album I can only listen to about half of. I like it more than I used to, so it's growing on me. it's just taking years to do so.
Hi Brett. Great video. You seem to have been through an emotional rollercoaster and survived. Good for you! I find it impossible to name my 5 favourite Warren songs but My Ride's Here is certainly up there. I love 5 songs on this album. - Title track, Lord Byron's Luggage, Macgillicuddy's Reeks, Hit Somebody and I Have to Leave. I like Genius, especially the verse about Albert Einstein. However, I'm not very keen on the other 4. My favourite track on Enjoy Every Sandwich is Monkey Wash, Donkey Rinse by Ry Cooder and David Lindley. Werewolves of London is the most played Warren song on the radio and I'm a bit fed up hearing it. Heresy! I'll investigate the Shooter Jennings' album. All the best, Russell Campbell.
Thank you for your kind words! I'm with you, I really don't need Werewolves, either. I mentioned it because I was pleasantly surprised how good Adam Sandler did :) Take care!
I saw Shooter Jennings do the " Warren Zevon " set in Brooklyn. Great Show.
Since you recognized the greatness of Achille's I won't slaughter you for completely missing the boat on Out Door and Houses. Good day.
Brett, thanks for the thoughts on Gordon Lightfoot, I'm the brother of Terry Clements, Kit both of us born in Detroit. I like listening to your thoughts about Gordon' s music. My Late brother was his lead guitarist for 40 years.
Your brother's work was nothing less than masterful, my friend. Gord played a mean rhythm guitar, especially in the early years, and your bother's leads added so much beauty and charisma to the music. Thank you so much for reaching out!
9: Coda 8: Zeppelin II 7: Presence 6: In Through the Out Door 5: Zeppelin I 4: Zeppelin IV 3: Zeppelin III 2: Houses of the Holy 1: Physical Graffiti
I've talked with SO many people whose favorite is Physical Graffiti... the band's catalog is so diverse that there's room for fans of every album. We all have our own favorites and we're all correct :)
I am so glad that I came across your video! The last Gordon Lightfoot CDs that I purchased were Salute and Gord's Gold II. I have some catching up to do. I was fortunate to attend three of his concerts in Denver, Colorado in 1979, 1982, and 1986. They were fabulous! I have always believed that Broken Dreams from his Salute album was an autobiographical song for him during this low time of his life.
Thanks for subscribing and checking in! Broken Dreams... man, some of his best lyrics. I can see where it would be autobiographical. He was really coming out of the wilderness, so to speak, and some dark periods indeed. I only got to see Gord once, September 2022 on what turned out to be his final tour. He looked fragile and the voice wasn't nearly what it once was, but he was absolutely captivating.
@brettsmusicreviews2641 I am an older guy at 73, and I have been listening to him since the early 1970s. He was a master artist with a beautiful soul!!
Amazing album
I think so - it's been in my Top 5 Motorhead albums for years :)
I’m 72 and have been a WN fan for over 50 years. I have most of your top 12, even duplicates. I really enjoyed this post. Thank you.
Thank you for the feedback and kind words!
Great commentary thanks for this video I just Love John Hiatt!!! I definitely would include Stolen Moments but I guess you could have done a top 100 too! lol I went to see a little feat show years ago and hadn't yet known John Hiatt well he opened that show and I was hooked!! remember that so well, while no memory of the Little Feat part! JH does so much diversity in his music, he was the first to sing the National anthem at the then new Baltimore Orioles ball park! I hope to see John and Lyle play together one day!!!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and love for these great albums. Please consider joining us to discuss a song on our A to Z John Hiatt podcast. I've had some spirited debates as I watched this and would love to continue the conversation.
Nice list and you make a strong argument for Tiki Bar. BtF tops mine followed by Perfectly Good Guitar. From there, I'd probably go to Slow Turning, Walk On, Dirty Jeans and Mudslide Hymns, Riding with the King, Crossing Muddy Waters, Stolen Moments, The Open Road, and Mystic Pinball. (Today, anyway...) Oh, and it was NIck Lowe on RWtK, not Ry Cooder. :)
Darn it, I get a lot of the earlier album line-ups mixed up! *lol* Your list is a force to be reckoned with, too!
@@brettsmusicreviews2641 thanks - it changes daily, which is a testament to Hiatt's catalog!
John is the best. I loved the video. My list would be somewhat different, but that is just a testament to the sheer number of great albums that John has put out. Stolen Moments would definitely be on my list, as would Master of Disaster and Perfectly Good Guitar. But no idea what I would cut. Maybe we need a top 15 for John.
Although I listen mostly from 1987 onward, I occasionally go back to the earlier work and find some tremendous songs! I would even re-do my video now, and it hasn't been that long. It's an ever-evolving appreciation for a stellar catalog.
Woozers. This is a great album. I only have my one measly copy, but I love it. It reminds me a lot of Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen "Live from the Armidillo World Headquarters" in terms of sheer fun and energy. I'll keep an eye out for an Albanian pressing for you ;)
@@roblabelle7874 there's always time to start searching for more 😆
Another interesting video, Brett. I've only got the Joe Ely and Warren Zevon albums which, being a fan, I obviously love. My favourite line from the Warren Zevon album is on Mohammed's Radio." - "The Ayatollah's got his problems too." What a great dark sense of humour he had.
My favorite line was probably ad-libbed, during "Poor, Poor Pitiful Me" when he screams "Get up and dance, get up and dance or I'll kill ya, and I got the means" *lol* Hopefully you'll give the rest of the list a listen!
I only have the Zevon and it's astounding. I definitely need those last few. I have seen the Ely a few times, but never one in good enough condition. I am racking my brain to come up with any live albums from the '80s and nothing really stands out. Maybe Petty's "Pack Up the Plantation". Interestingly, I think there are some tremendous Blues albums from that era. Maybe another theme to explore.
There are a few others I could have put in there. Leon Redbone put out a good 2LP set in '85 or '86, Koko Taylor put out a solid live album, James Cotton released two live records in the 80s that have lots of energy. But overall, the 80s was not the best decade for live albums, IMO. J. Geils Band put out "Showtime" but it's mostly all the late-70s & early-80s hits. It's better than their studio work but doesn't hold a candle to Full House.
I watched the entire video and loved every minute! Cheers, Longhairkev
That's incredibly kind, thank you!!
I agree about this one being the best live album ever. I'm from the Detroit area and grew up with J Geils Band since the early 70's. Serves You Right to Suffer is pure greatness!! Thank you!
Thank you for the kind words! I'm from the other side of the state, which was no hotbed for music ever *lol* Serves You Right is worth it alone to get the record. And I'll say, too, that everyone I've given a copy to has loved it. People who only knew the later pop hits were stunned at what a GREAT rock & roll band they were.
Great album, but I like it better - Live: Blow Your Face Out
Nothing wrong with that, my friend. It's not a bad album at all. I happen to prefer the first, but there's no wrong answer :)
Fantastic album, cheers! 🍻
Thanks, my friend!
Mine is 9: Coda 8: Lee Zeppelin 3 7: Presence 6: In Through The Out Door 5: Led Zeppelin 1 4: Physical Graffiti 3: Houses Of The Holy 2: Led Zeppelin 4 1: Led Zeppelin 2 But All of them are great
That's the great thing about a discography as diverse as Zeppelin's, we all hear music differently and each of our No. 1 is the right choice :) Thanks for the ranking, friend!
Phases and stages taught me that willie is as great as anyone ever was
Same! I had plenty of his work already, but listening to that for the first time was a revelation. His capacity to mine human emotions is exceptional.
1) Open Your Eyes by Yes. The only good news about it was the return of Steve Howe but the album stinks 2) Calling All Stations by Genesis. No Comments. Non even prog. 3) The Endless River by Pink Floyd. Hey Dave bring those demos lost on your computer and let's made an album of it. We got bills to pay. 4) Any ELP album after Love Beach. ( I love that one, actually). 5) Sorry, isn't this a prog channel?
Not a Prog channel but I'm always happy to talk about it, even if I don't know much - finding new music is always welcome :) Yeah, Endless River... not saying Division Bell was prog, by any standard, but it would have been a much better final PF album than this.
I had his songs going on a mix today laying in the sun and looking for the next best thing came on and hearing it tge second time was way different this time, especially understanding Warren a little more now, that one sums him up pretty good, my favorite song is renegade model citizen a sarcasstic wonderful song love the drums, or finishing touches right now, which are all on mr bad example I realized, I think this one and my rides here would have been in many ways better last albums, but the wind has powerful last word messages if you can hear them, besides of course keep me in your heart, the song every artists wishes they could write! But if anything the wind just rocks tge hell out of me, I could listen to disorder in the house (even tho the lyrics aren't the best imo) or party for the rest of the night on repeat, which combines my two favorite artists, it would have sounded good regardless but now theyre on it.
The Mr. Bad example album is such an underrated gem! I've come to appreciate The Wind more as time goes on. I think seeing the documentary, knowing what he was going through, made it more appealing to me. Thank you for your comments, it's fun to talk Zevon with fellow fans!
@@brettsmusicreviews2641 ty for making the video who knows whdn I would have been able to talk about him with somebody that knows, did you know that song porcalin monkey is about elvis lol, he didn't think too great about him which is refreshing, I myself never got into Elvis, oh and I'm sure you knew that johnny strikes up the band is about Jesus and the whole coming back thing, which to me made it 3 times better of a song, cuz at first I thought maybe it was jusg about the band gdtting together and possibly johnny carson.
Rising #7….wow
I knew I'd catch hell for that.
1. Physical Graffiti -- Band's crowning achievement. Masterpiece. Favorite by any artist, ever. 2. IV 3. HotH 4. II 5. I 6. Presence 7. III 8. ITTOD 9. Coda
Excellent reviewing skills man! Really enjoyable. Cheers!
Thank you for the kind words!
Dislike the phrase "Hits" .. i dont count him as a hits kinda guy ..prefer the term known songs ..
With Uncle Neil, that's a fair statement :)
I was able to pull a top 8, just from the top of my head after you eliminated 6 and before you started your list: The Pony Man Circle of Steel Endless Wire Beautiful Cotton Jenny Old Dan's Records Cherokee Bend Christian Island
I only added that for me, everyone else is free to add them :) They're amazing songs! But I'm biased, I think most of his songs were great. Excellent list, friend!
Nice selection Brett. Excellent video. It was difficult picking my top 10 songs. I have so many honourable mentions that I'm not going to list them. Doing a top 15 or 20 would have been easier for me. 1) Canadian Railroad Trilogy 2) Summer Side Of Life 3) Did She Mention My Name 4) Wherefor & Why 5) Race Among The Ruins 6) Black Day In July 7) Affair On 8th Avenue 8) Softly 9) Endless Wire 10) The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald
I have album cold on the shoulder on vinyl , no sign of it on c d
His best, in my opinion, but I don't have the CD, either :)
I heard your top 10 list of Gord’s songs, and I’m glad that not one hit was on the list. I’m really tired of hearing some of his hits. Particularly the Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald. That being said. I too made a list of top 10 Gordon Lightfoot songs, and mind you, I prefer his story songs over his “lovey dovey” ballads. My top 10 are as follows: #1. Cherokee Bend: A story about an indigenous boy losing his father who a group of white immigrants who planned to have him hanged. The boy had to do whatever he needed to survive, and ended up adapting to the white man’s leadership. #2. Hi’Way Songs: A song that’s biographical. It’s tells about traveling around from New York to Toronto, and living the lifestyle of a typical musician, but settling back on Canadian soil to relax for a bit. #3. Rich Man’s Spiritual: A gospel-folk song about planning a life. It’s a really good upbeat song. #4. Cold Hands From New York: A morbid ballad about being alienated in a town that you don’t live in. #5. Brave Mountaineers: A bluegrass toe-tapper, about life in the country. #6. Canadian Railroad Trilogy: Yes I’m breaking the rules here putting this 1966 “hit” on my list, but you got to admit. There’s a great history behind that song as Gord was commissioned by the CBC to write a song for a tv special commemorating Canada’s 100th Anniversary, and representing the building of the Canadian Railroad. It really paints a picture of the exhausted sweating workers hammering the spikes into the tracks. #7. Circle Of Steel: A winter ballad about a woman about to lose her home and is on welfare and drinking a ton of booze. #8. Nous Vivons Ensemble: A French song about uniting Quebec with the rest of Canada. #9. Ballad of The Yarmouth Castle: A shipwreck song about a cruise ship in Florida I think. Or is it a vessel? All I know is that it’s going down in flames #10. Approaching Lavender: I can’t really figure out what this song is about, but it’s a great melody. Well that’s my top 10. May not be yours, but if there are people who are interested in Gord’s deeper cuts, I recommend they give them a listen. Cheers.
You dug very deep there, friend, I love it! The no-hits rule only applies to me, anyone is free to say the six I mentioned are their favorites lol Your song descriptions are a nice touch, I hope it inspires others to delve deeper. Gord's storytelling abilities were fantastic.
The Watchman's Gone has long been my favourite Gord song of all time beside If You Could Read My Mind. I agree with list and am not familiar with the last two. Song for a Winter's Night is Fiona's favourite as a new convert to Gord. I'd add Bitter Green, The Circle is Small, Baby Step Back and Endless Wire. Man, the guy has a staggering number of great songs, any number of which could be in a Top 10. Glad I had a premonition about this ;).
That's spooky, my friend! I'm glad you did, too, though. She clearly has good taste if that's her favorite :) You're right - we could almost put the names of all songs in a hat, draw ten, and they'd be amazing. Picking this was difficult but fun.
Great list Brett!!! Gord had so many great songs. He is one of my all time favorites! You could easily do a top 30 of all his great songs. Some other great ones are second cup of coffee, ghosts of cape horn, hangdog hotel room , endless wire, the circle is small ,wherefore and why, cotton jenny, circle of steel, I'm not supposed to care , race among the ruins, high and dry, summertime dream, and last but not least sit down young stranger (to wear the crown of peace you must wear the crown of thorns ) best line ever. I agree start with his greatest hits and then start exploring .
Top 30 wouldn't be beyond the realm of possibility *lol* Your list for possible additions is full of classics too, my friend. I'm Not Supposed To Care *almost* made my list, it's such a haunting song. Thank you for your input!
Interesting list. My list is probably less heretical than yours. 1. Holy Diver 2. Heaven and Hell 3. Mob Rules 4. Rising 5. Long Live Rock ‘n Roll 6. Dream Evil 7. The Last in Line 8. Dehumanizer 9. Rainbow 10. Lock up the Wolves
Hey friend, if we all liked exactly the same records in the same order, it would be boring :) Thank you for the response! It was a lot more difficult than I thought it'd be when I sat down to actually rank them.
Great video. Hard to believe it’s already been a year that we lost him. I really loved the album ranking series you did. I often go back to it because I enjoyed it that much. I saw one of his final shows in the US in July 2022 in Ocean City, NJ. I also saw him in December 2021. I’m fortunate I get to see him when I did. I’m only 21 years old and absolutely love his catalog. Salute Gord!
Thank you so much for the kind words! We were all fortunate to see him when we did, my friend. When I saw him in September 2022, my life was in turmoil (a divorce, losing my house, all kinds of stuff), and his music was such a healing force for me. You'd never know he was at the end of his life, that it would be his final tour. He was a vibrant force on stage.
@@brettsmusicreviews2641 Don’t thank me, thank you for the wonderful videos of Gord. And I’m so sorry you had to go through so much adversity. I’ve been through quite a bit in the past year and Gordon’s music has really helped me out a bunch. It’s amazing what the power of a great song can do to you. When I saw him for the final time, I didn’t think it would be the last. As you mentioned, he certainly sounded his age but it was still a treat and he really enjoyed what he did. His performance had a very grandfatherly vibe. I will miss him greatly, but am so fortunate to still have the music! Cheers!
@richardbetz5531 here's to better times ahead for us both, my friend! Music is a healing force and Gord's albums will outlast us all, remaining old friends for the rest of our time here.
Thank you for honoring Gordon Lightfoot. His music will live on forever. I have his full collection as well. I laughed when you said you paid more for the Two Tones than you expected.. me too! But so happy to have this rare album. I love the song Tattoo. Salute so under rated. He said he felt if the album had been called Whispers of the North it might have got more air play.
Whisper of the North... it would definitely have resonated with his fellow Canadians and many of us from the Midwest :) Thank you for your kind words!
I like his original versions of 'Steel Rail Blues' 'Softly' 'Affair On 8th Avenue' 'Wherefore and Why' 'Canadian Railroad Trilogy'. I did not care for the new versions he recorded on his double album 'Gord's Gold' (November 1975). 'Summertime Dream' is my favourite Lightfoot album . Excellent video Brett. 🇨🇦
Thank you! :) I didn't mind the re-recordings but the originals are the definitive version, I agree. I spun Summertime Dream later in the day - I closed with that, Sundown, and Cold On The Shoulder (my personal favorite) before enjoying a cigar & bourbon on the deck with a Gord playlist.
@@brettsmusicreviews2641 Your welcome Brett. On another note, trying to pick my favourite Lightfoot song is as difficult as picking my favourite Beatle song. I could pick two or three songs but picking one is a lost cause. 😄
@@241156can Same! I can MAYBE pick a Top 10 for Gord. I have a few definite numbers but none is better than the other. So much of his work resonates deeply with me.
@@brettsmusicreviews2641 You might want to consider doing a top ten of Gordon's songs. I don't know his material after 'Endless Wire' (1978). However, I could still pick ten songs up to that point in time. Cheers ... David 👍
I really like Don Quixote. I listened to it three times last week. I also spun his debut a couple of times, which is absolutely stunning. I rank it up with JJ Cale's as one of the best debuts by a solo artist. I also really like Dream Street Rose. It has a terrible cover, but it is such a solid record. And you know how much I dig Endless Wire! The title track is my current earworm. I love hearing you wax on about Gord. Such an important figure.
Thank you for the kind words :) I never disliked Endless Wire, and it's grown even more in my view the more I listen to it. The title track ranks among his best, and most creative songs. DQ... the one-two punch of Christian Island and Alberta Bound is one of my favorites among all his work.
